"Hot and Cold" = "Young and Bold"

This season will probably consist of some unbelievable wins, and some unbelievable losses.  I expect this year to be up and down, it is going to be a “hot and cold” season.  While the ‘Canes are very unlikely to fight for the cup this year, there is one thing for certain, this young team is able to wield a wrecking ball worth of damage to some of the contenders – after all, they are, “young and bold.”

Playoff spots are often decided by 1 or 2 points, sometime, like last year, they can be decided by a shootout.

If you had to place your bet, who will the 2010-2011 ‘Canes hurt the most?

Atlanta, Tampa, and Florida. None of which will make the playoffs.

I wouldn’t bet on Tampa.

While i do agree

with TRylerA7707 but i’d also like to add in the eastern conference the Leafs too…And like the “author” this season will be one to keep the “tums & malox” close by too !! This fan is excited but also very aprehensive too…but we all shall see what we shall see huh ?? Thanks PC…I appreciate the effort…

Further Agreement

with CaniacSteve and TylerA7707 and would add the NY Rangers. By the way, I like the “excited with apprehension” description. That’s me.

i see what you mean, they have so much talent
even if this isnt their year, in a few years they could be promising

I disagree with TylerA7707. Tampa is improved and Stamkos scares the crap outta me. Atlanta is improved as well, but they’re basically starting with a new team and it’ll take time to gel. I’d say that on paper we’re between the two and a bubble team (between 7-10). But this is all on paper….

Not to mention the effect the new coach will have, I’d be very surprised if they tanked again.

by Go_Shelf on Aug 25, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

They are a vastly improved team from last year with Pavel Kubina added to the top-4 on defense, Simon Gagne added as a top-6 Winger, Dan Ellis in net, and Stamkos/Downie/Hedman all having another year under their belt. I wouldn’t underestimate Dan Ellis, his numbers have always been consistently good… He was just beat out of the #1 goalie spot in Nashville by Pekka Rinne who is easily one of the best young goalies in the league.

Tampa Bay just signed Randy Jones (D) to a 1 year deal… Another solid pickup, 2nd or 3rd pairing D with PP QB potential. They also re-signed RFA Steve Downie to a 2-year deal, TB is going to be good next year…

In my opinion Atlanta also got significantly better than they were last year with the addition of Chris Mason. He is an extremely solid goalie who already proved his worth with the Blues. Adding 4 recent Cup winners (Byfuglien, Ladd, Eager, Sopel) will also help, these guys will not be happy with losing… If they can get Bergfors re-signed and he, Evander Kane, Brian Little, and Zach Bogosian can continue their development then they could be a force to be reckoned with.

Tampa has loaded up on talent with mixed results in the past. I’m of the mindset to give them the benefit of the doubt with the new GM and coaching staff, but I’m going to wait and see it before I put them in as a lock for the playoffs. Right now I think they’re in the 6-10 range, but could go up or down depending on how the team responds to the new management.

Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?

Canes good chance!

I’m not in the camp that thinks its “very unlikely” to make the playoffs! Every team starts out
this year EVEN! They all will win/ lose games, at an unpredictable rate. the SE division would seem to be Was.‘s to lose/ but if Ovenchicken, or Backstrom get injured (like Staal last year etc) then their Goalie situation could bite them pretty easily!
Tampa is a wild card (probably better, but i’m not sold yet) Atlanta may be better, but don’t
scare me w/ o Kovalchuk! Florida still sucks! MEANWHILE The canes (who had the 2nd best record in the East in the last half of last year) certainly are as good (or better) than they were at the end of the year!! That said: i like our chances, particularly if they can win a couple of our early road games!!!
