Aaron Ward Announces Retirement In NHLPA Release
Aaron Ward, who three Stanley Cups and scored the opening goal in Carolina's Game 7 win over Edmonton in 2006, has announced his retirement, according to the NHLPA Web site.
"I’m very proud to have played for as long as I did in the NHL, with and against the best players in the game," Ward said in the release. "This game has left me with countless memories and relationships, especially from those Stanley Cup winning teams in Carolina and Detroit. Thank you to my family, fans, friends and teammates for all of the great years."
Ward is one of three University of Michigan players to win three Stanley Cups. Pat Hughes won one with Montreal (1979) and two with Edmonton (1984, 1985), while John Madden won his third this year with Chicago after winning two with New Jersey (2000, 2002) earlier in his career.

…..I hope the Walker punch and the disaster that was last year did not do to much damage for him here. I would love to hear him negating Dripp on a nightly basis.

Listening to him on 99.9 both Tuesday and Wednesday, he truly loves this area and considers it his home. He said he’s convincing his family/in-laws/friends are all moving here. When asked if winning the Cup in 06 is still special Ward said he is reminded of it daily and still holds a special place for that guys he won it with. So it seems he’s not holding any ill-will.
"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."
I, for one, am happy to just forget his performance last year, and remember him for his place on the cup-winning team, and his great interaction with, and love for, the community.

An Idea...
Can we start a petition to get A Ward as the ’Canes “Between the Benches” reporter?

It would be a hire of consequence.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
