What Happens in Helsinki - Episode 5: Drumroll, Please!
Jimmy V? Brindy Camp? Training Camp?
Pfffttt... I know this is really what you've been anxiously awaiting all summer... the unveiling of the Finland trip t-shirts! Check 'em out, y'all.

Mock-up (note that the map of Finland is actually white, not transparent):
I absolutely, positively can not thank RacoonFink and Cyn4Canes enough for their talent and hard work building the awesome final designs for us. Thanks also to everyone who provided input, and there were many of you who provided suggestions and ideas, and they were all much appreciated.
Okay, so now you gotta have one, here are the deets
T-shirts are grey, long-sleeves, pre-shrunk ultra cotton, and available in three cuts:
- Mens – S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL
- Women's – S, M, L, XL
- Youth – S, M, L, XL
All shirts are $15 each if paid in cash ($16 if paid via Paypal). If you need the t-shirt shipped out of town there may be a small additional fee for shipping but I will try to keep costs as low as I can.
Here's the fun part... you need to order and pay for the t-shirts through me, and I need to have orders and payment in hand by next Tuesday, August 31st.
There are two ways to order your shirt. First, if you are going to be at the AAA meeting on August 30th, I can take your order at that time and collect payment there. If you are not going to be at the AAA meeting, you can send me an email message with the following:
- Your name
- How I can reach you (email or phone)
- Your location – by this I just mean are you local to the area (in which case we can probably meet) or whether we will need to make alternate arrangements for delivery
- Quantity of shirts requested by cut and size
- Method of payment
You can find my email address in my profile here or also on the Hurricanes in Helsinki Facebook group page (look under the info tab).
T-shirts should be ready in time for me to start distributing them at the Caniac Carnival on September 18th and then through the preseason games as well.
Please feel free to leave questions and comments here and I'll respond as quickly as I can. I'm posting this in kind of a hurry so if I left out anything important I'll edit and add.
Thanks for your interest! Hyvä Canes!

Thanks for the shout out LTD! The design was really fun to put together. I really love how the text and signature on the back lines up with the eastern border of the map. (of course I love it, it was my idea LOL)
LTD really deserves a lot of credit for coming up with the idea of making a t-shirt in the first place, patiently waiting for Ruutu to write out the WHIH phrase, finding a place to have the shirts made and developing the prototype of the graphics. It was a very fun project. Makes me want to do more! It’s such a pleasure watching RF work his Photoshop/Illustrator magic.
Can’t wait to wear my shirt while touring Helsinki!
"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."
OT: Hellsinki's library
Just saw this photo of the Hellsinki library as one of the libraries featured in this collection from TwistedSifter’s Twitter feed.
Nice architecture!
Here we are now...entertain us.
Bumping with a reminder about the timeframe for getting orders in on the shirts. Tuesday is the deadline!
If you’ve already emailed me, you should see an email back from me today with confirmation and an “order number”.
I’ll be at the AAA meeting tomorrow night with order forms as well. Also, I’ll have blank shirts with me in a variety of sizes in case you’re not sure which style or size you want to order.
Let me know if there are any other questions.
Kiitos!

Posting additional information here because a lot of folks have emailed with questions about the ladies’ sizing.
Since ladies’ sizes are typically all over the map, here’s a good comparison between the men’s and women’s styles.
Both collars are traditional t-shirt styling with a taped crew neck. The women’s neckline is slightly more relaxed than the men’s.
The women’s sleeves are not cuffed, the men’s are. The men’s is about the length of the cuff longer.
Men’s shirts are about 2" wider at the shoulders, same size across the chest, and about 3" longer than the equivalent women’s size.
For those who know me in real life… In “normal” ladies clothing I wear a small/medium, and the medium ladies t-shirt fits me perfectly in the sleeve length and falls mid-hip. The mens medium is long in the cuffs and falls below the hip but is the size I’d buy if I bought mens.
For comparison against the standard ladies’ fare at the Eye, most ladies’ clothing at the Eye is junior styled which is more narrow across the shoulders and chest, and I’d typically take a large or extra-large in those styles.
Hope this helps!

JUST A REMINDER…
If you haven’t placed an order yet, it’s not too late but today’s the deadline! So email me if you haven’t already and you want t-shirts.
It was a mob scene at the AAA meeting last night. We’re now up over 200 orders. I should know by now not to underestimate either Caniac Nation or Wonder-Finn powers.

Was looking up the sections AAA told us the seats would be in on the Hartwall Arena site and came across the even listing for the games. The Google Translation is awesome.
Be sure to check out the comments. “Lots of water tank” and “firm”
tee hee!

I love that we’re going to see the world’s toughest hockey league narcotics!

Any Progress on Figuring Out How to Watch the Canes v. KHL Exhibition Game
For those of us arriving 5 p.m. in Helsinki on October 4th, any progress on figuring out how we can watch the Hurricanes game? Any interest in seeing if sometime when in Helsinki there is a Finnish pro hockey game to go watch?
Patience, grasshopper. Owing to the fact that it is a holiday weekend, nope, haven’t heard anything about the possibility of us viewing the SKA game. I don’t think Mike Sundheim even knows for sure yet that nhl.com is broadcasting the game online. The “rumor” about it after all just came out late Thursday night.
I contacted AAA to see if they have contacts at the hotel that might be able to assist with a big screen for the online broadcast, but I don’t anticipate they’ll even pick up the message until Tuesday and it will probably take them some time to investigate. I promise as soon as I hear anything I will let folks know.
As far as SM-Liiga is concerned, both Jokerit (who plays at Hartwall) and HIFK (who plays at Helsinki Ice Hall) are out of town while we’re there. Closest times for those who are perhaps traveling super early are Jokerit at Hartwall on 9/30 and HIFK at the Ice Hall on 10/2. I have no idea as to what other leagues may play there.
