Brind'Amour Named Director of Forwards Development
Former captain already working with team’s top offensive prospects
"It is important for our team to have its most-accomplished players like Rod stay with the organization," said GM Jim Rutherford. "Rod is already displaying the same work ethic and dedication in his new role as he did with us as a player."
For the full announcement made this morning, click on the title of this post. Brind`Amour is in Traverse City this weekend where he spoke a bit with NHL.com's Mike Morreale. Morreale tweeted:

Welcome to the Brain Trust
The single greatest development with the organization that is the Carolina Hurricanes in its now 13-year history in the Triangle, greater than the decision of Ron Francis to return to the org as a UFA, greater than the workout and fitness ethic established by Gary Roberts and embedded by Rod Brind’Amour, greater even than the draft success we are now starting to see after a prolonged drought, is the development of what I refer to as “the brain trust” of former team leaders transitioning smoothly into management.
What an incredible asset for the org to have the likes of Ron Francis, Rod Brind’Amour, Glen Wesley, and Tom Barrasso as player development specialists and advisors to the coach and GM.
Add all of them (and more) choosing to make the Triangle their permanent home after retirement and, well…this bodes very well.
Advantage Canes.

Mike Morreale is in Traverse City and had a lengthy interview he posted at NHL.com
Brind’Amour settles into Chapter 2 of career
Prospect Jeff Skinner, the seventh-overall choice in the 2010 Draft, already has reaped the benefits of having Brind’Amour as a mentor in Traverse City.
“He’s been great, giving us little pointers,” Skinner said. “He was talking to us about faceoffs and the little tricks he knows. Anytime he’s talking, it’s definitely good to listen. He stressed how every player picks up their own tricks as they mature — and he’s got a lot.”
If you missed caniacgirl’s suggested alternate job title, “Director of Saving Our Ass in the Faceoff Circle” may have hit the nail on the head.

An undefined portion of Brind’Amour’s success in the faceoff circle was his ability to press the envelope and still win a legal draw.
He has much to share…and Francis had a few tricks of his own, if we really needed to win one.
You know, GM’s hire vets all the time just hoping something like we have structured happens organically. That kids pick up tricks and tips from the vets, usually by just having to watch, unless you can land a talkative one.
Maybe they retain a player, like the Wings did Yzerman, to pass on “let me show you something, kid” lore.
But, to have what we have now structured, not just hoping communication from the silverbacks to the youth occurs, but knowing that it will. Plus, being able to control the message, so that it is consistent and uniform across the org.
Well, that’s the kind of thing that makes every player in your system better. And, it makes your system itself better.
We are very fortunate that the siren call of the Triangle is strong. Otherwise, the collective wisdom of Francis, Brind’Amour, Wesley, and Barasso would have scattered to the four winds.

Raleigh definitely ain’t Edmonton, that’s for sure. (and “Silverbacks” – perfect!)

LOL I had no idea that was going to catch on quite the way it has.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
