Carolina Picks Up First Preseason Win: Hurricanes 3, Predators 1
After falling behind 1-0, the Carolina Hurricanes came back to score three straight goals, got some solid goaltending from Justin Peters, and went on to defeat the Nashville Predators in preseason action on Thursday night, 3-1. Peters played the entire game for Carolina and made 27 saves on 28 shots.
About midway through the first period, J.P. Dumont started off the scoring with an unassisted goal as he cleaned up some loose change in the Carolina end. But four minutes and change into the second period, Patrick O`Sullivan took a pass from Zac Dalpe and tied things up.
Later in the period, Sergei Samsonov banged home a rebound off of a heavy Eric Staal shot to give the Canes their first lead of the preseason. The goal was a powerplay tally.
Erik Cole would finish up the scoring with an empty netter in the final minute of action.
These two teams will face each other again in Raleigh on Friday night, probably with revamped lineups. The Canes will then travel to Atlanta on Saturday to compete in their third game in three nights.
We will have the lineups and a preview for Friday's game here around lunchtime.
Quick stats:
- Bobby Sanguinetti and Eric Staal each had two assists.
- Jamie McBain played a team high 23:15 and was also a team high +2. He was on the ice for each of Carolina's three goals.
- Staal led the Canes with 5 shots on goal, but won only 7 of 23 faceoff attempts, (30%). Drayson Bowman had 4 shots on goal.
- Tuomo Ruutu had a team high 3 hits.
- Joe Corvo led both teams with 4 blocked shots.

Seems like O’Sullivan is making a name for himself. Can someone who listened tell me how he looked last night?
Don't trust me. I have psychological issues.
In my opinion, from listening it seems like O’Sullivan may be our best player so far this preseason. One thing that seems clear over the last 2 games, he has a great eye for creating or joining 2-on-1 opportunities. He is making great passes, skating well, and not giving up much defensively. If he keeps playing this well, looks to be Jokinen 2.0.
He’s pretty good at potting garbage goals off rebounds, too, which are prevalent from Staal’s shoot-first tendencies.
Let's go Hartolina WhalerCanes!!!! I am a big fan of the Canes, but I still have some residual Brass Bonanza Blue and Green in me.
Above is a quote from Elsker
Not sure why my post came through that way above (it was a quote) – I meant to say that not that I think Samsonov is a long-term solution but his goal last night reminded me of what Elsker said about Samsonov yesterday in another thread.

When he knocked that rebound in, I couldn’t help but feel a bit vindicated for defending the line choice. :-)
He does have good hands in tight quarters. And the crease area is definitely tight quarters.
And Staal can certainly create rebound opportunities with that hard shot of his, sometimes even deliberately firing at the opposite pad when there’s not an opening for him.
Way to go, Sergei.

Yeah...
Sammy hasn’t really been a stand-out player for a while now, but in camp and preseason so far, he’s been on fire. If he can keep this up he’ll be quite a force to be reckoned with.

But, as I said in the previous post, Samsonov simply becomes “best player available” on the left side, once you assign Jokinen (with his defensively responsible two-way game) to Sutter’s checking line. I don’t see him as the long-term (or even this season’s) solution for first-line left wing.
However, unfortunately, we haven’t quite identified or grown a left wing candidate from the prospects just yet that could handle first line responsibilities. Maybe Dalpe or Boychuk one day. Maybe not.
The search for Staal’s left wing continues.

I still think Sergei’s biggest problems last year was being stuck on a line with Brind’Amour and Kostopoulos. A player just isn’t going to produce points when you’re on a line with those two. I like TommyK alot but he isn’t point-producer and isn’t expected to be either.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.
The Canes just posted a link to video highlights from Nashville – no audio. I’m looking at that turnover for the Preds goal by Dumont – is it Harrison or O’Sullivan (#8) who makes the pass up the middle to clear the zone?

It’s not even really a pass up the middle, as described, but a lateral pass from O’Sullivan coming up with the puck along the boards to Dalpe breaking up the middle of the ice that is picked off by DuMont for the surprise shot and first goal.
Harrison is on the ice, per the Game Summary, but nowhere near this play that I can see.

Oh, well, from my memory of Kaiton’s call he got it wrong then.
He said it was a pass by Harrison up the middle that was picked off.
Kaiton has the smooth professional ability to call a game even if he doesn’t manage to see everything that happens. :-D
Things are admittedly happening fast down there. Especially when what looks like a routine breakout is suddenly a goal against.

Certainly isn’t the first time he got something wrong.
Maybe he just wants it to be Harrison playing his way off the NHL lineup with mistakes.

Elsker Casablanca is my favorite #1 movie
and to the Sullivan/Harrison situation..there is still 4 games stateside and 1 in Russia to go…my gut tells me O’Sullivan makes on the Cane’s roster by a hair. But i feel he will get better as the season goes on. But we all know that the cane’s can’t wait…they have to be off & running with all cylnders going…and as for who will be Capt. Staal’s left winger a choice will be forth coming. But will we fans be happy ? Only time will tell. have a good day & week end…
And if it Aint Hockey,It Aint Nothin !!
That Checkers 3rd Sweater ROCKS !!!
I’m beginning to think more and more that O’Sullivan will be on the Opening Day roster.
And, who knows? Might even work his way up to Staal’s left wing position.

Harrison and Pass Up the Middle
Has anybody seen the entire play on video? I looked at the Nashville clips and from that clip the loose pass came from O’Sullivan; but when Chuck w Letter K announced it, he indicated Harrison had a pass up the middle, which then led to the play with O’Sullivan turning the puck over. The video clip I saw only had Harrison on the ice, but didn’t show the moments prior to the play. Either Chuck K. couldn’t tell the difference between O’Sullivan and Harrison or the difference between a turnover and a pass by a defender to the middle of the ice or in the second preceding the video Harrison made a pass up the gut.
John Forslund clarified it on Tweeter
Jon Forslund did clarify the fact that O’Sullivan was the player who passed the puck into the middle. Harrison is totally undeserving of any criticism whatsoever for the play and the goal from all I’ve heard. It was a case of mistaken identity by Chuck K.
Wow … Dumont’s shot was just perfect. Can’t fault Peters there.

also, great one-touch pass by Sanguinetti to Staal on what became the Samsonov goal.

If the season started tomorrow who would you put in the 5 & 6 spot for d (assuming we only dress 6/night).
Well, I haven’t seen Carson yet this year in game action, but I think he’s the likely No. 6 given what he brings. Babchuk is the No. 5 for me. Harrison would be No. 7/healthy scratch. But there’s still time to sort that out.

If one of the pp point guys were to get hurt, i could see Sanguinetti playing before another replacement.

O’Sullivan
Man that kid is fast, I hope he does make the big team. He will only get better as the year goes.
Can’t wait to get this hockey monkey off my back and see some games, it’s been a long summer
have a great one everyone

From LTD’s very much appreciated tweets from today’s game group practice comes a number of insights into tonight’s lineup, which looks to be prospect heavy.
What really caught my eye was her observation that Dalpe was centering Samsonov and Ruutu.
That’s some very experienced and capable NHL veteran wingers right there Zac.
Let’s see what you’ve got.

Tonight's Lineup
Well, looks like they were checking him out in practice only, as the lineup (forwards and defense/goalies) has been announced:
Lines tonight: Boychuk-Sutter-Kennedy / Jokinen-Skinner-LaRose / Bowman-Nash-Kostopoulos / O’Sullivan-Matsumoto-Blanchard
D: Gleason-Babchuk / Harrison-Carson / Rodney-Sanguinetti. Pogge starts, Murphy backs up.
Still obvious that Dalpe is getting a top-shelf treatment.

Well, let me apologize for the tweets today, because my powers of observation were fine as to who was and wasn’t on the ice and what they were doing but my powers of interpretation were not.
The schedule said game group skate first, then non-game group. Turns out they only skated one group today, and a number of folks who never took the ice (Sutter, Cole, Jussi, O’Sullivan, etc.) are in the lineup. Then there were others that skated briefly (Skinner, Rosey, Gleason, Blanchard, etc.) and left early that are in the lineup. Then there are others who did not skate (EStaal) that are not in the lineup.
Logic was thrown out the window and as a result I think I’ve short-circuited.
Of this I was certain… my favorite Finn stayed way late for extra practice and help from Coach Brind’Amour. Loved it. :D
Dalpe stayed late too, got a lot of attention from the coaches as well.
Curious that Joni, again, is not in the lineup.

I’m the one that transferred your observation of Dalpe centering Ruutu and Samsonov into a line for tonight, but mostly because I believed the practice schedule in which the 10:30 group was supposed to be the game group.
So, since they were working together so diligently during that time period…shrugs…oh, well.
Sounds like they had a two-hour open practice, come and go as you please, free-for-all today, instead.

Yeah I reached that very same conclusion regarding that line.

Early observations
Looks like Dalpe and Sanguinetti are getting some early love from the staff. I think Mo likes Sully’s O-fence, not overly impressed with other parts of his game, based on comments I read from the Canes site today.
Which pretty much reflects what we’re seeing. Dalpe and Sanguinetti are playing pretty well, and contributing. Sully has shown good hands and skill at passing and scoring, but that give-away to Dumont (not sure if it was a bad pass or he just lost it off his stick) didn’t make him look very good in his own end. Wasn’t that the “book” on him when the Canes signed him?
I’ve seen the brief video (no sound) highlights that were posted from the game.
Looked like a good opportunistic move by the veteran Dumont to knock down a pass from O’Sullivan, as he moved up the boards, to his center (Dalpe) who was moving laterally up the middle.
Not only did Dumont knock down the pass, it sort of just stuck to his stick and dropped right in front of him.
In those micro-seconds that separate NHL talent from the wannabees, he not only knocked down the puck, but fired a quick wrister before the goalie could even react.
It’s a pass O’Sullivan would undoubtedly like to have back, but one that we see all the time without it being picked off, so not something I would classify as boneheaded. Probably just got talked to about how to get that pass behind or through the defender instead of stick-side.
Here we are now...entertain us.
I disagree .. you never want to see a pass thrown into the middle in the defensive zone. Great play by Dumont, but more than a “he’d like that one back” mistake, IMO. You need to avoid those plays.
by Cory Lavalette on Sep 24, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know, Cory. I’ve watched that play frame-by-frame through both camera angles, and what looks like a harmless breakout pass is picked off by Dumont headed “the wrong way”.
Wasn’t exactly to the middle, even. Dalpe was just inside the faceoff dot when O’Sullivan, who was being heavily pressured from behind, passed to what looked like a wide-open center.
Didn’t really see an alternative for him, unless he dumps it off the boards for a potential icing.
Here we are now...entertain us.
Bang it off the boards and into the neutral zone, or curl back and regroup. Just don’t make that pass … no good.
by Cory Lavalette on Sep 24, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, curl back was out of the question, so it was “ignore your wide-open linemate and chip it into the neutral zone, where it will undoubtedly start coming back your way”.
I think it was far more of a great (and lucky) play by Dumont than it was a mistake on O’Sullivan’s part.
But, I hear you.
Here we are now...entertain us.
I have to agree with Cory. Watching the replay, I see a player making a quick dump to avoid a player coming toward him, and, instead giving up the puck to that player. Whether he was doing it to avoid a hit or not, the pass was weak and right in front of Dumont. Not what you want to see from an experienced NHL player.
Couldn’t have been that wide open … it led to a steal and goal. I’m not killing the guy — right now, he has a job in my book. You just hope that’s a mistake and not a trend. This is a guy who put up a lot of minuses in recent years.

O'Sullivan and Pros and Cons
I think O’Sullivan is playing great. I did think for that one pass, he’d like to have it back although it was not a cream puff bad pass up the middle like it sounded on the radio. Even so, given O’Sullivan’s history of being too slack and lax in his own zone, I’d prefer him to do as Cory suggested. It’s one play and given the body of great work by O’Sullivan in his short times with the Hurricanes, I’m not about to write him off. To the contrary, O’Sullivan has seemed to be the best forward on the ice most nights. Dalpe, too, is playing tremendously well – which is not a surprise as far as I am concerned. Now if Boychuk can rise to the challenge, there’s a horse race from which the Hurricanes team will benefit.
Reading this conversation, I’m so glad we got that video from Nashville. I was ready to throw Harrison to the wolves last night w/only the call. Hopefully we’ll have a smooth view from the streaming tonight (for those who can’t attend in person.)
I was disappointed they didn’t have what was supposed to be a “highlight reel” save by Rinne on Bowman. Closest I found was at The Tennessean’s Game Gallery here. Image 5 of 12. Awesome photo with the goalie stretched out the the puck in mid-air.
