Is Nabokov being treated fairly?

I read this story about Nabokov being suspended by the Islanders, and I just thought he was getting a raw deal. If you recall Nabokov was the Sharks' goalie for a number of years and signed with KHL last year. He recently signed a one year deal with the Red Wings since their two goalies are hurting. Since he signed with the KHL the NHL rules state he must be put on waivers first before he could honor the Red Wings contract. Once he was put on waivers the Islanders picked him up. Understandably Nabokov didn't report to the Islanders and doesn't plan to so the Islanders suspended him yesterday. I don't get the Islanders point of picking him up, and ultimately forcing the issue. Clearly with Nabokov's age he is in his last days of playing. The odds are that the Islanders are not going to make the playoffs so why not play younger goalies that may have a shot at staying with them for the long haul? On the other side of it why deny Nabokov a last chance of playing for a playoff team and a chance to win the cup? I have no ties to Nabokov or the Red Wings, however, I just think it is unjust to deny him the opportunity to play for the ultimate prize.
