Checkers Owner Michael Kahn Announced As Hurricanes Ownership Partner
Just more than a year ago, the Charlotte Checkers' move to the AHL and affiliation with the Carolina Hurricanes was in its infancy. Those ties just became even stronger. Michael Kahn, the Checkers' owner and governor, was announced Thursday as an ownership partner of the Hurricanes by Canes CEO Peter Karmanos Jr.
Karmanos Jr. has been actively pursuing minority partners since at least February when it was reported that he was seeking 20 to 30 investors to buy stakes of about $2 million to own a share of the Hurricanes. In late July those numbers changed, with Karmanos Jr. telling Triangle Business Journal he was pursuing 10 to 15 investors who would invest between $1 million to $5 million for a collective ownership stake of 20 to 25 percent of the club.
Kahn, who spoke to Canes Country in February 2010 when it was announced he was buying the AHL's Albany franchise and relocating it to Charlotte to replace the same-named ECHL Checkers with an American Hockey League affiliate, is the first investor, though there is no word yet as to how much his investment is or what his stake in the team will be.
The release from the Hurricanes is after the jump.
HURRICANES ANNOUNCE KAHN AS OWNERSHIP PARTNER
Charlotte Checkers owner becomes an investor in Carolina HurricanesRALEIGH, NC – Peter Karmanos Jr., Chief Executive Officer, Owner and Governor of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced Michael Kahn as a partner in the ownership of the Hurricanes. Kahn is the Owner and Governor of Carolina’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.
"Both organizations, the Hurricanes and the Checkers, are heavily committed to the growth of hockey in the Carolinas," Kahn said. "Investing in the Hurricanes not only solidifies my support for Mr. Karmanos and his vision for the sport in the South, but also my support and belief in the growth of the game. The Hurricanes are a top notch organization led by Mr. Karmanos and Mr. Rutherford and I am extremely excited to have been afforded the opportunity to join them. I believe both organizations have very bright futures and I look forward to what is on the horizon for the Hurricanes, Checkers and the sport of hockey itself."
Born and raised in Atlanta, Kahn has been involved in a family-owned wine and spirits business all of his life. He is the chief operating officer of Empire Distributors Inc., originally founded by his grandfather in 1940. Kahn, who has been nominated as Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year, currently resides in Charlotte with his wife, Wendy, and three sons.

I wonder for how much of a stake? Hopefully this will loosen PK’s grip on the wallet a bit. I don’t have dreams of Pegula part deux or anything, but it wouldn’t hurt to go after some proven talent once and while rather than shopping in the bargain bin, or last years hot style rack.

More details on that stake from an article Mike Maniscalco wrote today for WRAL Sports:
Karmanos: Local investors understand Canes’ value
Says Kahn’s investment is $5m and that he has a total of $22m committed between Kahn and a variety of other investors. All kinds of numbers being thrown around in the article, but it sounds as though Karmanos’ goal is somewhere around $46m when all said and done.

Go Canes & Checkers !!!
Really excited to see the bonds between Raleigh and Charlotte growing
now maybe, we can get more than a preseason game down here. Maybe a 1 for 1 swap. We send you the Checkers and you send us the Canes for a week? I’ll throw in a box of bo’berry biscuits and a Charlotte Hornets hat (slightly used).
Deal?
Seriously though, this is excellent information for both organizations.
dangit... shouldn't post this late
information = news.
u send us the checkers for a week BUT we get to keep daniels as head coach u got a deal
Of Maurice, Karmanos said: "I’m happy Paul is back but he’s going to be judged the same way as any other coach. We need to win more consistently."

Montreal in trouble - Erik Cole?
Canadiens are desperate for defenseman and so far Cole is not having an impact on offense. They wouldn’t want another small forward like Boychuk, Sanguinetti and Bowman for Cole?
The contract is a problem but not as big a problem as LaRose on the first line. If Mo is remaining coach, the only way to fix the first line is by acquiring a familiar veteran. With Cole in addition to Stewart and Ponikarovsky, the Canes would start to look pretty strong.
The alternative is to replace Mo and take LaRose off the first line. It saves $ millions by letting the Canes take advantage of the players they already acquired plus one prospect.
The worst course is to keep Mo and not reacquire Cole because otherwise the Canes rise or fall with LaRose’s fortunes on the 1st line.

Not going to happen. He has a four-year contract with about 3.9 years left on it.

As much as I appreciate the contribution Cole made especially last year, he made his bed…now he can sleep in it! Montreal overpaid in terms of years for an oft injured forward who is 34 years old.
Desperation from Game Four......let's not wait until the end!

My opinion is that we should trade a D (Joslin, McBain, or Dumoulin/Alt/Biega) plus prospects/picks for a real 2nd line Center. Our 2nd line is floundering and this addition would automatically (you would hope) move LaRose out of the top-6. A young player with offensive flair, FO ability, and 50+ point potential would be nice.
A guy like Antoine Vermette from Columbus (who has a lot of Centers) or Stephen Weiss from Florida would be perfect and affordable salary-wise, but expensive in a trade.
Center is not an issue, IMO. And I don’t know how you can consider Vermette affordable — $3.75M this year AND three more years? Significantly more than Jokinen for a player with similar output, but a playoff bust. No thanks.
Doubt Weiss would be moved in the division.

Similar offensive output to Jokinen, but I would say Vermette is a clearly superior defensive player and averages 55-60+% in the FO circle. I have nightmares of us finishing bottom-5 in FO again, a stat that is also extremely important in the Playoffs. I don’t hold Vermette’s past against him, Columbus sucked hardcore in the PO the last few years and he was a Rookie/Sophomore during Ottawa’s runs.
I think Tallon doesn’t have many rivalries yet and would be willing to do pretty much anything to build a winner in Florida, just my view of the situation.
If we go after anything from Florida, it should be Booth. It would be entertaining watching Booth & Staal skate up the ice together on a 2 on 1.
Some managers manage using the carrot, Mo manages by using "The Stick."

One of my favorite players to watch. Sad thing, to me, is I think Dalpe has some of Booth in him. Needs the opportunity to show it.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. Jokinen, IMO, is more creative and an underrated defensive forward. He’s also versatile. I’m not suggesting we’re discussing a Jokinen-for-Vermette swap, but if we’re talking value for $$$, I think Jokinen is a much better bargain.

Why would we get a center?
Brandon Sutter is a shutdown offensive superstar!

It's not gonna happen...
But I could not be happier to see that Cole’s quest for greener pastures has found him playing third-line minutes with no success whatsoever. Hasn’t he had a chance to learn this lesson before?

I am fine with this partnership as long as Karmanos isn’t considering moving the Hurricanes to Charlotte permanently.
Knew this was coming from someone. Not going to happen. For one, TWC Arena only seats 14,100 for hockey. Secondly, the market is establishing in the Triangle, not Charlotte.

I agree it's not going to happen...
But TWC could seat many thousands more than that. They don’t sell tickets for the vast majority of the upper deck.
