Chemistry Class: Will Carolina's New Lines Get The Job Done?

The Carolina Hurricanes had a disappointing preseason in many respects.  One major problem was that they could not get much offense generated and ended up being outshot by an average of 10 shots per game.

Even GM Jim Rutherford was quoted this week as saying that the team was slow in developing chemistry.  So the coaching staff responded with a major line shuffle this week.

Let's face it, lines on any hockey team can be fluid entities.  Sometimes they are changed period by period or even shift by shift, and it appears that might be the case now with the Hurricanes, at least to start the season.

Last year's successful line combo of Jokinen, Ruutu, and Skinner has been dismantled,  Zac Dalpe has been shuffled down to the fourth line, and Patrick Dwyer and Chad LaRose have both been promoted from where they ended up last season.  (LaRose missed much of the preseason because of an injury.)

What do you think about the most recent lines skating in practice today, which appear to be the lines of choice for opening night?

  • Skinner, Staal, Ruutu
  • Tlusty, Jokinen, LaRose
  • Dwyer, Sutter, Ponikarovsky
  • Dalpe, Brent, Stewart

Numbers 15, 53, and 12 should get the job done, but if we look at where the goals came from last season on a player by player basis, one might wonder where the other scoring will come from now.  What if the opposition can stop the first line?

Star-divide

Here are last season's scoring totals, regarding each line as they are constructed above:

  • 83 goals, 196 points
  • 41 goals, 95 points
  • 27 goals, 62 points
  • 25 goals, 63 points

Will those lines work?  We will find out tomorrow night, but one thing is certain.  If they don't work, look for more changes to come sooner rather than later.   Paul Maurice admitted as much during today's post practice interview.  The question is, how long will he give them to develop chemistry?

The defensive pairings at practice also gave some indication who would be starting tomorrow night.

  • Pitkanen, Gleason
  • Kaberle, Faulk
  • Allen, Harrison

McBain, Joslin, and Murphy look to be on the sidelines, at least for now, although Maurice hinted that there could be changes for the game in Washington on Saturday night.  We will see.

It will be interesting to see how the new Kaberle and Faulk combination does.

More about this in our game preview tomorrow.

oh and for the record

I hate that 2nd line. Do not like it AT ALL.

by GiantsCanes on Oct 6, 2011 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

Here’s what Sports Illustrated had to say on the issue (talking about Dalpe):

This 21-year-old center is just what the ’Canes needed: an infusion of offense in their top six forward mix. He produced nearly a point-per-game in the AHL and got 15 games with the big club last season. This season is all about solidifying his standing. The ’Canes will also hope to get blueline contributions from two teens who made the roster out of training camp: Ryan Murphy, 18, and Justin Faulk, 19. Murphy is a former junior teammate of ’Canes center Jeff Skinner, who won the Calder Trophy last season after being drafted in the first round the previous summer. —Darren Eliot

Guess we’re not the only ones confused about the lines.

Chad LaRose while being an energy player

Does not belong anywhere near an NHL 2nd line.

by GiantsCanes on Oct 6, 2011 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

Well, We'll see wont we....

But I for the life of me can find no reason in heck for Rosie to be any higher than the third line…

Last year he was a complete drag on the top lines, heavily negative and failed to score (assists or goals) at even a top nine pace. This pre-season, he’s been injured twice, contributed nothing, and seemed to not get the new break out plan because he more than anyone else on the team just kept flipping the puck out of our zone to center ice. Each time resulting in a turnover and another entry back into our own zone….

JR said Dalpe would be good with Ruu and Skinner…. In preseason Mo said Dalpe looked good with Staal. He at least scored and generated chances for others. LaRose? not so much.

But Mo goes back to his standard penchants and comfort level: play the vets over prospects. Thought we learned from the LaRose experiments last year, but I guess not. If Mo thinks LaRose is a top six forward it’s no wonder he’s never been good a creating any…

But, to the question at hand? We’ll see. Ruuut never worked well with Staal before, Staal is significantly faster than Skinner and Ruu, so no complement there.
I yi yi…

I’ll hope for the best….

Line Pairings

Don’t understand why Dalpe is on the 4th line and LaRose does not need to be on the 2nd line. I thought Dalpe played pretty well with Staal. Of course what I’m saying doesn’t matter, besides the line will be changed throughout the game anyway. That’s where the chemistry won’t happen between the players on the lines.

Last year: http://www.canescountry.com/2010/9/27/1715023/preseason-bad-news-and-good-news-goals-for-and-goals-against

“The team has only scored six goals in four preseason games so far and while it’s early, this could be cause for concern if the trend continues. Of these six goals, one was scored into an empty net, (Erik Cole).

Last season the Hurricanes scored 230 goals for a 2.8 average per game, (13th in the league). Currently, they are averaging 1.5 goals per game and they will certainly be looking to improve on that the rest of the preseason."

They wound up scoring 2.82 goals per game, good for 12th in the league.

Every year the ‘Canes can’t hit the broad side of a barn in preseason, yet are surprisingly decent defensively. Then the real games begin, the intensity steps and the proven star players actually start to try, and you see guys like Staal scoring goals and the terrible defense looking like pylons against non-AHL players.

He stepped in in Staal’s first year. Made a comment to the media that Staal wasn’t being paid and burning a year of eligibility to play 12 minutes a night. It’s not something he does much. Interesting enough, that was the same year that Mo got fired previously.

For as good of friends as JR & Mo are, they really don’t seem to be on the same page. JR makes comments like that about Staal to the media and also says things about Dalpe being a top 6 forward, yet he’s playing on the 4th line. There just seems to be a disconnect.

The new Dynamic Duo, Eric Staal & Zac Dalpe!

by PackPride17 on Oct 7, 2011 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

But JR also did echo some of the comments MO made about the forward lines. I think there may be some communication going on between the two that we’re not getting. I can’t help but think that JR is somewhat involved in these lines.

I can’t say I like the lines as shown above. However, let me just say a few things:

1) I can understand the Tlusty placing as a reward for a good camp and doing a lot in the off-season.

2) I can see LaRose being set up as a straw man for Dalpe to take his spot. I like LaRose, but he has no business in the top 6 if everyone is healthy. Last year proved that.

3) I’m wondering if the fourth line assignment for Dalpe isn’t about motivation more than anything else. He got time with Staal and Poni and didn’t put up a lot of points (as opposed to what Saad did in Chicago with their top line talent). Now, I think this tactic maybe works better with Boychuk as Dalpe’s issue didn’t seem to be one of motivation but of converting on chances, but I’m not the coach.

4) Is it possible that Tlusty and/or LaRose are being showcased on those lines. We’ve talked about Boychuk as a sweetener, perhaps that’s what’s going on here?

You’re saying Dalpe didn’t put up a lot of points in the preseason. The whole team didn’t put up a lot of points. Since we know that certain players can score, that would indicate it was more of a style/system problem than a player just not producing. And correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Dalpe actually led the team in points this preseason.

There are also a total of 7 new players dressed for tonight’s game. 4 Forwards, 2 defense, and Boucher as the back up. With 6 games as a sample size, and games that not everyone played in, plus the new players I don’t think we can make any conclusions about a “system”.

Just to follow up on Dalpe, he had an assist in the first game against Buffalo, at least a goal against the Jets on the 25th (no recap available), and didn’t play the first game against the preds. He was placed with Staal after that at which point he didn’t score and was -2 for three games. So, based on that, what can we assume about the combination of Dalpe and Staal?

And to top it off Dalpe was a minus player while doing it. Dalpe got the opportunity to take the ball and run with it and he didn’t do it. 3 games isn’t a huge amount of time, but there was nothing positive on the stat sheet to show for it.

If LaRose went scoreless on the first line with Staal for three games and was a minus player would you be in favor of keeping him on the first line? If you’re not then how can you be in favor of keeping Dalpe there?

I have to agree that that second line is mystery meat – and a lot of posters are saying (rightfully so) that if you stop the 12/15/53 line, you win. Get Dalpe up there.

Secondly, and this may change in Washington, but why have Murphy here, and then sit him? Play Murphy with Allen; we know what we get with Harrison.

Next thing is that we are playing the #1 team in the East, and a team that went to the Conference finals in the first two games – so if we don’t look great, don’t hit the panic button. Here’s to lots of air traffic delays over Moscow in the next two days (or is Ovenchicken back in the US already)?

IF....

Mo, for some oddball reason, decides to roll lines and goves the 4th line more ice…maybe this works. I agree that Larose is NOT the heart of this team from a competitive and production standpoint and should not be elevated beyond the third line. I am dissapointed that Stewart is not regarded or has not performed to a level that places him above the 4th line. I am super dissapointed to see Dalpe on the 4th. My gosh…he’s better off in Charlotte than on that bench bound line. Dwyer, however, always seems to be one of the fastet guys on the ice and seems to have an scoring ability. Maybe he is Larose a few years ago,but he seems to finish better than Rosie ever did. Safe to say this really is a chemistry experiment that is destined not to last for long. On Mo lasting past December…let’s hope he does so that we have a chance for the playoffs. If he must go at all, I would hope it would be within the first 10 to 12 games so we have a chance to rebound. Let’s hope for immedite success for all, regardless of their contract future…this includes the softly booed one. He is still soflty booed at every introduction & never by myself.

Dalpe on 4th line

This is what drives me crazy with Mo, playing rookies on 4th line (Skinner is an exception). Never mind that Dalpe has been tipped as one of the candidates for Calder, let’s have LaRose as a top-6 forward.

Meawhile teams like Chicago and Buffalo have decided to give rookies a chance on their top line. Chicago will start with top line of Saad, Toews and Sharp. This could never happen under Mo. Apparently, these teams have never heard of of a golden rule of Mo’s hockey: rookies should play 5 min/game max on 4th line until they are absolutely terrified of making even the smallest of mistakes :)

by MHodak on Oct 7, 2011 5:28 AM EDT reply actions

Well

Most of our forward prosepects except Skinner have made satements to that effect, as did Corvo last year…

by Squeaky83 on Oct 7, 2011 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Saad had a much better camp than Dalpe did. Dalpe was discussed as a Calder trophy candidate before camp began when the thinking was he’d be in the top 6. The thinking was being around that talent he would naturally score.

And seriously, Faulk is in the lineup. Skinner was in the line up last year. Is it possible that the rookies that Maurice has not given a lot of time to haven’t earned the playing time?

I don’t like Dalpe on the fourth line either. Don’t think that makes any sense at all, but come on.

Well, similar to what I posted above, would you say, based on what you saw in the pre-season, both in scrimages and in games, that all those forwards on the top nine played better than Dalpe?

Because I didn’t see that… And a lot of the Calder talk also occured post a few games where pundit had the opportunity to watch Dalpe, and to Listne to MO say he earned a shot with Staal.

by Squeaky83 on Oct 7, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

And Dalpe had three pre-season games with Staal and couldn’t score and was a minus player. If LaRose got three games with Staal and didn’t score and was a minus player would you be pushing to keep LaRose on the first line? Dalpe got his chance and couldn’t stick up there. If he couldn’t do it in the pre-season how can he do it in the regular season?

Seriously, look at the stats and be objective. Dalpe doesn’t look terrible, but he didn’t take the ball and run with it when given the opportunity.

Regardless of your opinion...

The assertion that line combinations should be decided based on press clippings is ridiculous. And you prove yourself as contradictory when you suggest that young players in major roles “could never happen” while also acknowledging that just such a thing happened LAST YEAR!

We're all assuming it's the old Mo fourth line concept

If the fourth line gets like 8 minutes T.O.I. in tonight’s game, then yeah, the line pairings are questionable at best. But if they roll 12 minutes or more on the fourth, then it’s more of a difficult matchup situation for the opposition, and it kinda/sorta makes sense.

Look, based on the past few years, IMHO there is no way LaRose is a top 6 player. That said, we really don’t need him as a fourth liner any more since we have so much talent in Charlotte chomping at the bit to get up here. There really is no place for him anywhere, UNLESS he has a breakout season and starts lighting the lamp AND playing well defensively (play the MAN, not the PUCK rosie) to cut down on his +/-. By putting him with some more skilled players paired up against another team’s studs, it’s kinda/sorta like a last gasp “show us what you can do” type of situation, perhaps.

I dunno…grasping at straws here…hoping for the best…GO CANES!!!

This is what I’m hoping is the case. It’s the only logical reasoning behind the line combinations, assuming the line combinations are accurate.

Lines Are Never Set With Maurice

Maurice, fortunately in this instance, never keeps lines together for extended periods. Never is a powerful word, of course; however, I think it is accurate in this context. I would not be surprised if these lines are re-shuffled after one complete round of shifts.

I do not like green eggs and ham; I do not like these lines, Sam I am to quote Dr. Suess. I do like the team as rebuilt, and other than the lines as presently constituted there are almost no line combinations that look dubious. As long as Dwyer and LaRose are not played beyond the third line any other variation should work fine.

by abramsdoug on Oct 7, 2011 6:50 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

And on most teams one of them would be a 4th liner and one a healthy extra at best.
Sometimes even conservative investments go sour- playing Dwyer and LaRose because they make less positional mistakes than Nash/Bowman/Sutter42 might make is still no guarantee this team will make the playoffs.

LaRose and Dwyer in the top 9 ? Even if Mo’s lines are fluid, why he would think for a fleeting second that will cut it is beyond me. The only reason I can come up with is that maybe he thinks the 2 vets will come out of the gate quicker and by leaving Dalpe on the 4th line it will allow young Zac to ease into his full time NHL job with less stress. If those lines make it on the ice tonight I’d expect the Canes only goals to come from a great effort by Skinner and one from the 4th line, which left intact will be the Canes highest scoring line!

by Hockeydog on Oct 7, 2011 7:28 AM EDT reply actions

So Skinner and the 4th line are going to be only ones scoring? Don’t forget about that tall, gangly guy, #12. He has averaged 34 goals a season over the past 5 years (no longer including his BIG year) and has done pretty well against Tampa in the past. Staal’s career average against Tampa is 0.62 goals per game & 1.13 points per game.

Theory

Maurice can always make changes to the lines and he can also give line D more ice time than line B if line D is doing better. So Dalpe’s line could conceivable get as much time as Jokinen’s if they are showing Maurice more on the ice. Also, Jokinen is a slow starter; he is never the same player in October as in March and April. So line 2 looks like a 4th line to me right now, and Maurice can choose to limit their time if they underperform.

by hockeythoughts on Oct 7, 2011 8:39 AM EDT reply actions

He could, but

he hasn’t shown that propensity in the past… Lavi did—if the 4th line was going like gang busters, that’s who Lavi sent out. Mo, nope.

Mo does not seem able to change his comfort level, and he goes with his favorite vets. He’s done it his first term here. He did it in Toronto, he’s doing it again now. Ride the same horse even if it’s tired and not producing. EVen when a different lie is showing some spark.

Oh Great...

Now we have a player questioning the lines:

Jokinen began training camp on the wing but was shifted to center for the Canes’ final preseason game. He joked that center was his “least favorite position” and that he had expressed that to Maurice, smiling and adding, “I don’t know if my English is bad or what’s going on.”

So we have a player who’s produced 50 points + his last two seasons and scored 30 goals from the wing and we’re gonna put him in his least favorite position and saddle him with last years Line Curse (LaRose) and hope he gets it done…

Really disappointed in the line combinations. I have no issues with the defensive pairings. I think they provide a good balance. Only apprehensive over Gleason being with Pitkanen because they haven’t worked well together in the past and Gleason plays better on the strong side.

My issue with the lines are across the board. You bring in two guys who you preach are going to be used to play with Staal and attempt to replace Cole’s production. Don’t get me wrong there are 82 games in a season and they still can, but why in the world are you playing one of them on our defensive line and the other on our fourth line.

Yet two guys that would not be above another teams 4th line in this league, playing 2nd and 3rd line minutes. LaRose and Dwyer should be on the 4th line. To top it all off we have our best prospect rotting away on the 4th line. How is he going to show anything if he gets 10 minutes a game max and is playing with players that are not expected to score tons. Yes Dalpe will have Stewart and I know Brent had an elustrious scoring career in juniors but that doesn’t sit well with me.

LInes shoul d be:
Poni Staal Dalpe
Skinner Ruutu Jokinen
Stewart Sutter Tlusty
Dwyer Brent LaRose

You get the balance across the board. I know everyone has already posted very similar lines, but its frustrating. I also feel bad for McBain because he hasn’t played badly, just not phenomenally

by Caniac Kid on Oct 7, 2011 10:15 AM EDT reply actions

The more I look at it, the more I have to agree

that second line looks like garbage.

You talk about needing to be bigger and you bury your two biggest bodied forwards in the bottom 6. I just don’t get it. BUt like others have said, Mo WILL shuffle these combos, so we may only see a shirt or two a piece for these lines.

Early prediction for tonights game, TB 3-1 (third goal being an EN) and Stamkos grabs a 3 point night out of us.

by wylde4canes on Oct 7, 2011 10:23 AM EDT reply actions

???????????

On sheer optimism alone, I came up with the thought that maybe Mo has Dalpe on the 4th line to help with opening night jitters, it being his first opening night in the NHL, so he’s not overwhelmed or amped up too much. I don’t believe this is the case, but I’ll at least try optimism for opening night coaching SNAFU.

I’m not too up on the Juniors, can someone let me know when Kitchener’s training camp/season begin? I don’t see a lot of reason to carry Murphy and scratch him unless it’s not yet the regular season in Kitchener.

Also, checked up on Kitchener and their season began 9/23, so I’m not totally sure why he’s being kept up and not being played. The schedule doesn’t ease up until a stretch against the @Blues, @Jets and Sens from the 21st to the 25th. That’s a long time to wait to get him in a game.

Some semblance of an explanation from CH.com
What this could result in is a slightly different look at defense each night, at least for the first couple of weeks in the season. When asked if there would be a set rotation or if it would be based on who plays well, Maurice said it would be a "bit of both."

"Clearly, we have an opportunity to improve our defense if we have a guy that’s not playing well," he said. "Golf analogy – we don’t want to [change] our grip on every hole, but at the same time, there has to be some pressure to perform. The players that are here that have experience are here in the NHL because they’ve proven they can play, but they need to continue to do it. And we have young players that are going to play."

The Answer has been Known Before the Question Even Asked

The forward lines as reconstituted by Maurice are not good. They haven’t worked before, they did not work last night, and they will not work in the future. The fact that Dalpe in three pre-season games didn’t score 20 goals is irrelevant. The Hurricanes need to put Skinner/Ruutu/Jokinen back as a line. That line works well. It isn’t important that on paper the line might not be the best in the NHL. When the two Finns and Skinner hit the ice, magic happens.

LaRose cannot play in the top six without killing the offense for whichever line he is on. He is marginal on the third line; but do not expect any third line with LaRose to add much additional scoring on a consistent basis. He is fine on the fourth line and is fine killing penalties. The coaches can cite LaRose’s success 8 years ago in the AHL as evidence he is a scorer; but LaRose is not a top six player on a successful NHL team.

Dwyer is not a top nine player; but is essentially LaRose II. He does fine on the fourth line and killing penalties. Maurice tried last season to prove he was right and that LaRose was a top six forward. That experiment failed. The good news is that Maurice is strong-willed and is not likely to change his approach until things are desperate. That is good in the long run because the Hurricanes need to add elite talent. Elite talent is available three ways: (1) sign UFAs and pay a king’s ransom for it or mortgage the future and that isn’t happening with the Hurricanes; (2) get lucky and have the rest of the NHL miss a talent, that happened I think with Dalpe, Murphy, and Rask; or (3) be horrible as a team and load up on elite talent in strong drafts, which is what Pittsburgh accomplished, and Florida and Winnipeg seem to have done. The Hurricanes now are headed down a path of a frustrating season, but one which yields the elite talent in the draft the Hurricanes desperately need to be successful in the short and long term. In my view, it is how Maurice is wired. He has his views of how he wants to organize and play his team. That is how he sees it and that for good or bad is how it will be. In this case, it looks like an almost certain path out of the NHL; but he is convinced he’s right.

For me, it’s a simple test. Look at the TOI, and the lines. The less time Dalpe, Ponikarovksy, and Stewart spend on the ice in the top nine, and the more time LaRose and Dwyer spend on top nine, the great the likelihood the Hurricanes score two or fewer goals and loss badly.

by abramsdoug on Oct 8, 2011 9:49 AM EDT reply actions

Hyperbole does nothing to advance the conversation.

The problem was not that Dalpe didn’t score 20, or even 200. It was that he didn’t score ONE. And when exactly did any of the coaches mention LaRose in Lowell?

Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

Love the Team, Hate the Lines

This season LaRose has zilch points, either goals or assists, and Dwyer has nada points as well. In 2002-2003, with Plymouth in the OHL, LaRose scored 61 goals. In the AHL, his highest production was 2004-2005 with 20 goals and 22 assists for 42 points. LaRose did not tear up the AHL. If he were Boychuk, people would be labeling LaRose a permanent AHL player. The fact that 9 years ago, in the OHL with the Plymouth Whalers he had a grand scoring season is fascinating, but irrelevant.

I hope that Maurice gets this entire year to show what he’s got. I think on the present course, with 1 win and 1 OT loss since the pre-season started, he will not be renewed; but he should be given the chance to show he can take this team to the playoffs. He is losing a good portion of the Hurricanes fanbase judging by the response at the RBC last night; but those things change on a dime with winning. Maurice is a hockey expert, and has a huge number of wins as an NHL head coach. I can’t envision how his approach to the forward lines can be successful, but I hope it is. Given LaRose’s performance since the 2009-2010 season, I cannot imagine any other NHL coach would move him between the second line and first line. It hasn’t worked yet.
