It seems to me, and understandably so, that there's a lot of black and white solutions out there right now among us. Fire Maurice, trade Staal, etc. I want to adress the latter in this post, I've already said my peace on Maurice in comments elsewhere.
I agree that it is hard for fans to make a complete judgement on leadership, because we're not in the locker room, but the "leadership" displayed on ice is a let down, IMO. Staal's a great player, always will be, but perhaps he's not the on ice leadership that the team needs. Maybe instead of the all or nothing approach of keeping him or trading him, he should be stripped of the C.
An effective captain doesn't always need to be your leading scorer (just look at his predecessors). Rather, the captain should be an "always on" kind of guy who can motivate in every situation, on and off the ice, in practice and in games. Maybe it's time to give the C to less of a "superstar" and more of an all around workhorse who always seems to be into what's going on and fired up. I know he's not the prolific scorer, but Chad LaRose really does seem to me, to exhibit the work ethic and fire that's needed to lift and lead this group of guys right now.
Just my opinion, be gentle.
