Sabres At Hurricanes: Game Day Preview
The Buffalo Sabres, (11-7-0) invade the RBC Center tonight to do battle with the Carolina Hurricanes, (6-10-3) in the second matchup of the season between these two clubs. Carolina won the first contest, 4-3 in Buffalo on October 14.
In case you missed it, the Hurricanes are coming off a debacle of a performance on Wednesday night in Montreal, where they were whitewashed, 4-0. The team has now lost six of their last seven and 10 of their last 13 games.
Everyone is reading from the same script on Edwards Mill Road though, as players are sticking together, saying the right things, and vow to try harder as a team. But fans want to know, will those words actually translate to better on ice performance?
The coaching staff has gone back to another line re-shuffle. Anthony Stewart, who had been healthy scratched the past two games, will be promoted to the Eric Staal line and apparently will be the captain's wingman along with Chad LaRose.
There was no morning skate today, but according to Chip Alexander's tweets from practice yesterday, the lines were as follows:
- Stewart, Staal, LaRose
- Skinner, Jokinen, Ruutu
- Dwyer, Sutter, Ponikarovsky
- Boychuk, Brent, Tlusty
Justin Faulk was just recalled yesterday and could play tonight. The defensive pairings have not been confirmed.
Cam Ward will be in net and will probably face Jhonas Enroth, who is filling in for an injured Ryan Miller, a victim of a run over by Milan Lucic earlier in the week. UPDATE: Sorry, Brian Boucher got the surprise start.
Buffalo is led in scoring by Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville with 23 and 22 points respectively.

The Canes will be back in black tonight, looking to change their recent fortunes. The game starts at 7. It will be televised locally by FS Carolinas and on 99.9 The Fan. We will have our open game thread up and running at 6:30.

Stewart with Staal and LaRose…..Sigh. I would have felt better if it said Stewart with Staal instead of LaRose…
…good to see we kept Boychuk up so he can get his three minutes in again on the 4th line.
I guess the good news is Mo kept Skins and Finns together.
Well, looks the same to me. Same coach. Somehow I guess I’m hoping this isn’t some form of insanity and maybe some kind of different effort will make the results different.
But I guarantee this is a fragile, fatalistic club right now. If the Slugs can strike for the first goal we’ll be in real trouble. If we score first we may be able to sustain and ride a wave of feel good crowd support. If not……oooooo hate to see how this one goes, but hoping for the best. I’ll be watching.
Yeah I don’t know where that came from.
I have to believe that Staal is asking for LaRose to be on his line. No way Maurice can be that stupid.
I’m with you huricane9 – Staal does have some say on who is linemates are and Staal might very well be the reason LaRose stays there while everyone else moves around them. Think about it – suddenly everything makes sense. (I’ve been discussing it on twitter for the last week with a few of the regulars here, trying to figure out if it was outlandish.)
Whether it’s on Maurice to override him (as he did for the Rangers game) then maybe so, but with Staal’s play so tenuous right now, it’s not obvious to me what the right choice would be.

and with that thought Miss Carolyn
Staal might feel comfortable with Rosie there as the Skin & Finns line are with one another..I persoanlly never gave it much thought myself than i rmeembered some of the other famous scoring lines in the NHl…and somnecwere really ugly looking on paper..as in you got to be kidding..but comfort & chemistry do play a bigger part than we fans think or consider at times

I agree
Every time I’ve been to a game against Buffalo – majority of their fans have been jerks.
Ready for the Canes to win the Cup again! :)
+1
I remember sitting next to two of them on Ronnie Francis appreciation night. While they didn’t get ugly, they certainly didn’t have much nice to say about his Hall of Fame career. It got a bit tense a couple of times but they backed off when they saw what Ronnie meant to a Caniac.
saw three slugs in full jerseys at craft beer store in apex. a bad sign.

Not related to tonight’s game in any way, but has anyone seen this ? Yikes!
The only easy day was yesterday.
Its the dudes laughing on the bench behind him that hurts the most.

What the F***!!!!!
Can we please slot LaRose accordingly? I don’t care if Staal wants him on his line, Maurice needs to see it isn’t working and change it.
Keep an eye out for me at tonight’s game. I will be the guy in the #12 jersey, Staal’s name will be covered by blue painters tape and it will read “Mo Must Go!”

The continued use of LaRose with Staal is like me trying to bang a nail into a brick wall using my forehead. It’s not a good idea, it doesn’t work, and it causes more harm than good!

Staal clearly needs LaRose’s defensive expertise to balance out the line and help dig him out of that -18 hole.

It makes me think of that really old Snickers commercial where the bald guy is trying to " will " hair to grow on his head. After about 45seconds of grunting a single hair pops up and he sighs. You then get Snickers old " Not Going Anywhere for a while? ". Its like Mo is trying to get that ONE hair to grow with Rosey and Staal.

doghouse to penthouse
Wow, Stewart on the Staal line.
Does that seem like a message that his healthy scratch was more likely an injury ? Or just more panic mode stuff ?
I can’t figure out how a guy would go from the doghouse to 1st (?) line, like a reverse-Boychuk: 1st line to 3+minutes on the 4th line.
roster for tonight
Faulk is in, Joslin will sit,
And – Brian Boucher gets the start

Predictions for tonight's game
1. The first team that scores will win.
2. The Skin’s and Finn’s line will be our biggest offensive threat.
3. The fourth line gets about 5 minutes of ice time.
4. Slug’s fans will be drunk jerks as usual.
Question for all of Caniac Nation who is calling for a coaching change (myself included). What happens if the Canes do the unthinkable and sweep the weekend with wins? Does it prolong the misery? I personally believe something is in the works, but is management going to fire a guy after back-to-back wins? Regardless, I hope there is a change in the very near future.
The only easy day was yesterday.
Trip spreading the BS on to appease fans
“Stewart goes from healthy scratch to playing on Staal Line, just goes to show how you can move up under Maurice”
