Hurricanes recall Brett Sutter from Charlotte; Re-assign Zac Dalpe, Zach Boychuk to AHL
The Carolina Hurricanes have sent two of their young offensive talents, Zach Boychuk and Zac Dalpe, to their AHL affiliate in Charlotte and recalled the hard-checking Brett Sutter for the game tonight in Philadelphia.
Boychuk had seen few minutes in this stint with the big club, except for one game in New York when he played on Eric Staal's left flank two weeks ago. Dalpe was recalled Saturday to fill in if Patrick Dwyer was not able to play vs the Maple Leafs Sunday. Dwyer was good to go and Dalpe was a healthy scratch.
Brett Sutter played four games with the Hurricanes this season with one assist and used only on the fourth line. The full text of the release is after the jump.
HURRICANES RECALL BRETT SUTTER
Boychuk and Dalpe reassigned to Checkers
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled forward Brett Sutter from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). Rutherford also announced that forwards Zach Boychuk and Zac Dalpe have been reassigned to Charlotte.
Sutter, 24, has earned one assist in four games this season with the Hurricanes. The Viking, Alb., native was named Charlotte’s captain prior to the season, and has two goals and two assists (4 points) in 14 games this year with the Checkers. He was the Checkers’ leading scorer during last spring’s Calder Cup Playoffs with 14 points (4g, 10a) in 16 games, helping the Checkers reach the conference finals.
Drafted by Calgary in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter (6’0”, 200 lbs.) has totaled one goal, two assists (3 points) and 21 penalty minutes in 23 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. In 286 career regular-season AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte, he has notched 84 points (34g, 50a) and 276 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Sutter played four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Kootenay and Red Deer, tallying 138 points (58g, 80a) and 274 penalty minutes. He is the older cousin of Hurricanes alternate captain Brandon Sutter.

I really like Brett, I think he could/will be a valuable 4th liner on this team for years to come; but I’m not excited to see this team move even closer to a true grinding team that doesn’t value offensive creativity or abilities. This team needs a new direction and the only way to that is to get rid of Mo.
And a side note: I really do like Chad LaRose (seriously I do) in the right role, which is a 3rd or 4th liner winger. But I think JR needs to trade him. Because with him on this team; Mo, Staal, whoever keeps putting him in the top 6, on the PP, and keeps the kids ice times limited. The only way I see for this team to grow is to get rid of “comfort-zone” players, which will force Mo to play the future.

It is truly time to trade LaRose. As long as Maurice is coach, he is like a high school romance who can’t make himself break up with a bad relationship.
Relationship must have been slow starting. Didn’t he put LaRose in the press box when he first got back?
Yes he did. Also sat Brind`Amour and Samsonov.

Yes, and since then there is no force of nature than can get Maurice to turn loose of his bromance with LaRose. No amount of wooden headed penalties, no amount of blown/wiffed open shots, no amount of bad passes, no amount of chasing the puck around and leaving the team open to odd man rushes, no amount of weak shots to the goalie’s chest.
Brett Sutter went for a hit on the blue line and left the opportunity open for an odd man rush. He was riding back to Charlotte the next day despite playing quite well. If one tracks the decline of scoring on any of the top three lines at even strength, it follows LaRose like a happy puppy. The correlation statistically is quite high. Even Skinner can’t shake the LaRose effect. The Corsi numbers show the impact as well. What’s odd is that Maurice is a numbers guy. He knows all the statistics to a fault. It’s an emotional decision at this point; and is beyond the power of any argument to change Maurice’s use or approach. It will be even more devastating as the young prospects get to the point they have to be played. If the Hurricane draft a forward prodigy in 2012, it will get even more intensely to be a drain on the team. Every shift LaRose spends in the top six is the probability the line will not score at even strength.

This is an excellent move against a fast, skilled, offense minded Philly team. AND Sutter ain’t afraid to throw a punch and get jiggy with it.
Harrumph
Mo hinted at this last night. They’ve had too much experience getting pushed around by Philly. And it certainly doesn’t hurt to get playing time for the youngsters, even if it isn’t in the NHL.

when we trade them for picks and another larose/dwyer-type grinder or two

LA really needs some 3rd & 4th liners. I read somewhere that there bottom six has only accounted for 3 goals this season. LaRose would be a perfect solution for the Kings! :)

LaRose as Canes' Best Player
It’s awesome that LaRose is the Canes’ best player. He’ll command a high draft pick when he is traded because there will be a bidding war for his services. His salary is very affordable for a top six forward; and as the Canes best forward, any team would give up some of their high picks to get him. Fantastic.
I didn’t realize you have a sense of humor, I’ve got some lawyer jokes if you’re interested.

Or if you are the Red Wings you’ll take him and make a good serviceable 4th liner out of him and play him more minutes in that role- kinda like Patty Eaves.
Am I the only one irritated that The IR’s Patric Eaves has managed to stay healthy in Detroit in a way that he couldn’t do here for some reason?
I believe in strength. I believe in unity. And if that strength, that unity of purpose, demands a uniformity of thought, word and deed then so be it.

Well it’s good that JR is finally holding true to his word regarding shuttling players up and down I-85. It’s bad that when he has brought up skilled players his coach doesn’t read the instructions on the label and play them according to their skill sets, with the exception of Brett Sutter, who is a natural call up for Mo.
Well
Better that they play in the roles they were drafted for so when we trade them they can come back and kill us…. I mean, so when we get a new coach they will not have forgotten how to actually play offense. I don’t know how you can be a forward prospect on this team and not be fully frustrated or disheartened.
Dalpe, if he read the press clipping saw he was expected to get a top six spot based on his play and skills. He looked good initially in camp, then was injured… Right into Mo’s designated prospect role <5 minutes, 4th line.
Then Boychuk comes up, looks good. Mo says he likes what he sees, he’ll get time. Boy moves up, looks like he deserved to stya on the top lines and continue to adapt (my opinion) Mo basically says the same, then boom two games in a row <4 minutes, now sent down.
So do these guys suck??? Doesn’t look that way in the AHL, didn’t look that way when they got time. Are our scouts that crappy? is JR unable to guage talent? Or is Mo just unwilling to fit these cogs into his system.
We need to stop trading vets at the deadline for picks…We either don’t pick well, or this coach wont use them. We need to take on more contracts like Kaberle and Allen to help teams dump older veterans. These guys Mo will play. Mo seemed to like the last team he had like that. And you have to admit, it helped us get Skinner….
