Hurricanes Make it Official: Kirk Muller is the Next Coach
The official announcement on the new head coach was released at noon today.
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that Kirk Muller has been named the team’s new head coach. Muller had been serving as the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. He will be introduced at a news conference later this afternoon.
"Kirk is a proven leader and motivator, and he has strong communication skills," said Rutherford. "He was a captain and a Stanley Cup winner as a player, and did excellent work as a coach with the Canadiens and the Admirals. We feel confident that he is the right man to lead our team now and in the future."
Muller, 45, becomes the 12th person to serve as head coach for the franchise, and the third to be head coach since the team relocated to North Carolina in 1997. The Kingston, Ont., native had a record of 10-6-0 with Milwaukee this season, after taking the job as head coach for the Nashville Predators’ top affiliate in July 2011. Prior to joining the Admirals, Muller spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens, helping the Habs reach the playoffs four consecutive seasons. He also has experience as a head coach with the Queen’s University Golden Gaels, and an assistant for Team Canada in the 2005 Lotto Cup and the 2006 Under-18 World Championship. Current Hurricanes alternate captain Brandon Sutter was a member of that 2006 Under-18 World Championship team.
The rest of Muller's bio is after the jump. We'll have plenty more on this all day and from the presser later this afternoon.
As a player, Muller totaled 357 goals and 602 assists (959 points) in 1,349 career NHL games over 19 seasons with the New Jersey Devils, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars. He skated in 127 career Stanley Cup playoff games, totaling 69 points (33g, 36a), including the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for the Canadiens in the 1993 Stanley Cup Final. He also reached the Final with Dallas in 2000, when the Stars fell to New Jersey.
A six-time NHL All-Star, Muller posted 30-or-more goals five times in his career, 20-or-more goals nine times, and had seven 70-point seasons. He established career highs with New Jersey in 1987-88 and Montreal in 1992-93, totaling 37 goals, 57 assists and 94 points in each of those seasons. Muller served as captain for both the Devils (1989-91) and the Canadiens (1994-95).
Prior to turning professional, Muller played junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for Kingston and Guelph, and represented Canada at the 1984 Olympic Games. He made his NHL debut for New Jersey straight out of junior hockey in 1984, after the Devils selected him second overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, behind only Mario Lemieux. In addition to the 1984 Olympics, Muller also represented Canada at four World Championships (1985, 1986, 1987, 1989) and at the 1984 World Junior Championship.

Interesting choice. My only question is, if we are going the AHL direction, why did Daniels get passed over?

I guess it's better that people think highly of Muller than not...
But he’s going to have to do a hell of a job to take this team and its bargain bin roster into the realm of consistent competitiveness.

my guess
Rutherford promised to spend a bit more. ice_chip reported Rutherford’s looking to trade D for a forward. Canes could be looking at spending more now with new ownership.
the first time I say something smart, I'm putting it here.
The "new ownership" hardly injected any capital at all.
And if they’re willing to spend now, why weren’t they this summer? Why not in October when it was obvious the team had plenty of holes?

But stability is a big plus
Investors might not bring tons of money, but they do bring additional team stability, which encourages those with capital to invest in more/better players.
Some money was spent – tons were resigned & Kaberle was signed. It’s obvious Rutherford thought that was enough. Hopefully he’ll listen to Muller when Muller tells him what he needs.
the first time I say something smart, I'm putting it here.
Look at the payroll.
We HAD to spend plenty of that money to get to the cap floor.

I can work CapGeek too
Rutherford’s a fan of resigning people on the cheap. No lies there. But there’s no indication that he won’t be willing to spend in the future – he’s obviously made promises to Muller. And right away he’s saying he’ll looking to trade for a forward. That seems promising to me.
the first time I say something smart, I'm putting it here.
It's not about Rutherford.
I’m sure Rutherford would love to have $60 mil to blow. But Karmanos won’t do that because he doesn’t want to risk losing that kind of money on the team

Karmanos was the one flapping his yap about growing hockey in the South
I don’t believe Rutherford would have been able to get Muller without Karmanos’s support in terms of being willing to spend/trade.
the first time I say something smart, I'm putting it here.
That flap has been ongoing.
And yet we’ve very rarely spent very much. And why wouldn’t Muller want the job? The biggest hangup he’s had in terms of getting NHL jobs thus far is his lack of experience in the role. Well, now he’s got a no-risk shot at that, and he can use this as a stepping stone even without having to produce a wildly successful team given the budget constraints.

Carolina is a sinking ship.
For ANY coach to hop on, Rutherford would’ve had to sell the job. He obviously thinks Muller can make things happen. I don’t think refusing to spend to the cap will necessarily be a bullet that takes this team down semi-permanently. Look at the work Muller did in Montreal with similar constraints re: skill.
the first time I say something smart, I'm putting it here.
I just don't agree at all.
There is no downside in Muller taking the job.

Spending is fine, but there’s another side of the coin. Just because you are willing to spend doesn’t mean the players you want have the desire to come here at any price. Would Richards, Carter, etc. consider signing here. Most probably not as they want to go to big market teams for other reasons than just salary. This coming free agent period will be no different no matter how much PK is willing to spend. You have to find players who will agree to play here. It’s not that easy.

It helps if you have an extra eight figures in the budget.
Yes, our market has disadvantages. As such, we’re going to have to outbid better teams for free agents. But we don’t have close to a chance given our current circumstances.

Tampa has gotten good players without overbidding
although part of that has probably been the draw of Yzerman. Still, it says it’s not impossible. There are selling points. Find them and sell them.

happy days are here again
the three year storm is finally over.
Player thoughts
I really wonder what the players are thinking now…. Love to be a fly on the wall….
I’m betting they are feeling very mixed emotions right now as I think Maurice was liked by the players but the players excited for a change. That’s my guess anyway.
Let's go Hartolina WhalerCanes!!!! I am a big fan of the Canes, but I still have some residual Brass Bonanza Blue and Green in me.
I think the players were waiting for this to happen – waiting for the other shoe to drop. Now that its done, it’ll almost be like starting the season over and bring new energy / attitude to their efforts. It’ll also wake-up a few of them who are snoozing their way thru this season.
What is the only letter in the Canadian alphabet, eh? Need a hint, eh?
Aren't they pro athletes?
If motivation is the problem for the players, that’s an issue that goes deeper than coaching.

I think there has been a lingering weight on the locker room this season. The players know exactly what is happen. They knew Maurice was likely on their way out. They didn’t want it to happen but they knew it was going to happen. The team gave their effort to save his job but that just sputtered out. It’s hard to play for a guy you are sure won’t be there in a week.
Maurice III: Judgement Day
Anyone want to start a pool on how many seasons until we see Maurice behind the bench again?
I doubt he'd take it again.
It’s a thankless job. The team’s position in the league makes it difficult to succeed, but if you do, fans don’t know any better than to expect it on a regular basis despite its unlikelihood. This team has done poorly, underperformed no doubt, but over the course of this round with Maurice, the Hurricanes rank highly in the league in terms of plenty of wins vs. payroll matrices.
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

Say what you want, Maurice’s career has been more disappointment than success. When he took over Hartford/Carolina the first time, he increased his win totals for 5 consecutive seasons (going from 29 in 95/96 to 38 in 00/01). But then the win totals decreased until he was fired. He then took over Toronto and had 40 wins (1 less win than the year before) and then dropped to 36 the following year. Then he came back to Carolina. His pro-rated win total would have been 47 wins over an 82 game season. Then he followed that up with a 35 win season, rebound last season with 40 wins (but no playoffs), and was on pace for only 26 wins this season.
Whatever you want to call it, he generally did not get the job done. I wish him the best, but he will not get another NHL head coaching job for a while, if ever.

So you’re saying Maurice was given the task of hammer a nail, but was given a tool bag without a hammer. There are still other tools that can be used to accomplish that task, but he refused to use them.

Also depends on what you are calling “get the job done”. I didn’t think this roster (despite it’s flaws) was expected to be at the basement and have the appearance of utter chaos. The roster is an issue, no doubt, but we aren’t talking about the division lead or even a playoff spot – we’re in the basement.
So we should have been happy with a "competitive" tenth in the conference?
When it comes down to it, what’s the difference? Your roster either has the capacity to make the playoffs, or it doesn’t.
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

by MichaelProcton on Nov 29, 2011 12:59 AM EST up reply actions
But from a “getting the job done”, a coach is expected to meet expectations. If vying for the last playoff spot is where that falls and you are sitting in the basement, you aren’t getting the job done.
If you see no difference, that’s fine – but I believe most people define things a little more granular than “make the playoffs” or “miss the playoffs”.
If an entire roster is underperforming, you aren’t doing anyone any good. Not the players, not the fanbase, not the bank account. A “competitive 10th” can turn into a playoff spot and keep the fanbase interested a bit more than sitting in the basement waiting for the draft.
No.
I’m saying that Maurice was given the task of getting a bargain bin roster to the playoffs, but was given a bargain bin roster. The “tools” you speak of are apparently the ability to cast top-six forwards and top-four defensemen out of thin air. Maybe Muller is a wizard? Or an alchemist?
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

He was given a team that was similar to the one’s he had over the past 3 seasons. We finished 6th, 11th, then 9th. He had us sitting in 14th when he was fired. So we probably have a team that is 8th through 10th and were sitting 4 places behind that, that seems like not meeting expectations.

I recall reading a post earlier today on how Mo had never played at NHL or even AHL level so couldn’t relate. This guy scored the cup winning goal. If it’s true that the Canes tuned out Mo (and let’s face it, who wouldn’t at this point) there’s not a cat in hells chance that this guy will put up with it. The Habs fans call him Captain Kirk and Kirk is Work. Even the Leafs fans want him as a coach. And he seems to give kids a chance. Plus a special teams wizard. JR kept Mo around far too long but he has to be applauded for this.
The next step is a trade sometime this week. I’m guessing a D-Man, Dwyer and a prospect Forward will be packing up shortly.
What do you think we could possibly get for Dwyer?

I'd be surprised if Dwyer was traded
Considering how well he works with Sutter.
the first time I say something smart, I'm putting it here.
Yeah, Dwyer isn’t getting us anything. Trade candidates (realistic ones) seem to be Joslin, Larose (who is playing well), Allen, Gleason, Ruutu, or Jokinen. On the prospect market, Boychuk still looks like a trade-likely. Some combo of that might get us somewhere. The Ducks look like a potential dance partner.
Carolina could trade D prospects too
There are a few of those cooking in Charlotte.
Or Dalpe.
the first time I say something smart, I'm putting it here.
Saw Chip tweet that JR is looking to trade a d-man for a forward.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
awww, keep Dwyer
I have an irrational love for him after he scored two shorties in one of my first live ‘Canes games. I’m also gaining an irrational love for Sutter and Tlusty, since they’re the only two guys who have even been trying the last two weeks

I’m very excited about this move. Mo needed to go a while ago and I am glad they brought in someone that appears to be more of a motivator and someone who probably has a little more offense in his background. I’m not going to believe we are playoff contenders, because we still have a lot of things to correct; but at least this is the first step in the right direction.

Just moving bodies to make room for new bodies. Kaberle is not tradeable, so we’re going to lose either McBain or Joslin, someone from Charlotte and a forward on the roster… Dwyer is my choice. Although, wouldn’t be surprised if it is Tlusty.

Why not trade Gleason?
We might get more in return. McBain and Joslin are still young enough to become better defensemen, Gleason seems to have reached his peak.
I’d rather keep the younger guys with the posiblilty of becoming a better team next year.

Rainbows, Waterfalls, Phasers and Candy CANES
It is nice to be excited about CANES hockey again. The anticipation of seeing the new bench boss and the new approach he will bring is exciting. I am sure, like any other new boss, he will have an interim time to assess the state of things and to determine what he has to work with. I hope he is quick to implement some obvious needed changes to the lines. I also hope that the trade rumors are true and were part of providing Kirk with a team with a new identity that he can begin to work with. I imagine that the players will all be motivated to show their worth to the new guy. I am also anticipating greatly the amount of Star Trek analogies and parallels that will flow on this site:
“One of the advantages of being a captain is being able to ask for advice without necessarily having to take it.”
—CAPTAIN KIRK, Star Trek: The Original Series, “Dagger of the Mind”
"Forget about style; worry about results."
Bobby Orr
Positives
1. Muller was a forward
2. Muller played in the NHL
3. Muller jumped straight from the OHL to the NHL
4. Muller scored hundreds of goals
5. As an AHL coach, Muller has seen Charlotte’s personnel.
All of those very basic facts should enable Muller to judge which if any Canes’ forward prospects are ready to help in the NHL. There should be no presumption that defense matters more than offense, that goal-scoring is a secondary skill, or that youth disqualifies players from substantial TOI. By the same token, if Muller says the forward prospects aren’t ready, they aren’t ready.
Have been silent for a while because I didn’t enjoy attacking Mo. I bit my tongue rather than continuing to pile on Mo in his final days. I’m not saying criticizing Mo of late was wrong – it was merited and JR took an awfully long time before taking an obviously necessary step, putting the playoffs almost certainly out of reach for this season. Criticizing Mo just got old for me personally and was anything but fun.
It will be nice to build some hope for the Canes’ future from this day forward.

I see Procton going on about how this team still sucks and that we have many more problems than a coach. Yes, that’s completely right. But I don’t think anyone here has unrealistic expectations. Playoffs are extremely unlikely this season…which could turn out good depending on where we finish regarding the draft.
What I am most excited for is the chance to see some life restored in the team. The Montreal game was a bad loss, but damn was it an exciting game to watch. If this team at present loses every single game for the rest of the year in the same way, I’d be fine. I just want to be able to go to the RBC Center and enjoy some hockey. Maurice hockey was boring me to death. Muller seems to put more focus on youth, hard work, and offense. These are the things that make games fun.
I guess I’m like most Cane fans in hoping we have reached the bottom of the valley. The signing of a new coach may be the signal that we have started to turn the ship around! We are certainly void of a couple of players that would make the ascent faster but at least now we have some hope!
In Kirk we Trust

This was a caoching move by JR that I was most in favor of, but figured given his history would not happen. I saw no NL retreads I was interested in, and i was not in favor of Lewis or JD taking over unless on an only interim basis.
I wanted someone from outside the org. Someone who could come in and assess what we have. Someone with credibility both a player and a coach. A leader with the ability to motivate and communicate with the team. Soemone who could develop prospects.
I’d give JR an A+ on this move. As he mentioned and has acted previously, you just don’t fire a coach on a whim or without doing your homework unless you’re willing to accept someone else moving in from within. JR wasn’t.
We can criticize JR’s offseason moves in hindsight and say they didn’t work. Kaberle clearly hasn’t. Stewart hasn’t had a real shot yet, but also wan’t in prime condition when camp started—still a wait and see, but right now not so good. Poni is starting to show what we wanted—net presence, some opportunbistic scoring, and occasional good shows of puck posession. But overall, what it shows is JR is willing to take gamble’s within his limited budget criteria set by PK. Here’s another. it may work, it may fail, but it looks good—like many here thought Poni and Stewart migh look good—they certainly give us better size.
How Muller handles Staal, Poni and Stewart, and to a lesser extent Skinner will show what kind of players coach he is (not in the sense people like him as the do Mo, but in the sense he gets player sto play to their potential and develop/improve). It will also put the final stamp on JR’s off season acquisitions—they were bombs as well, or they may be good depth scorers.
We’re still absent one top scorer, but if Stewart and Poni can improve and contribute, two depth guys may still be close to as good as one top scoring guy (at leat one we could trade for at this stage in the season…)—— maybe.
JR’s an interesting cat…
It’s time for us fans to applaud the move to Muller and give HIM a chance to make an impact on the team. IMO us fans should quit the coaching for awhile and let this new man assess the talent and what needs to be done to get us back to the level of a playoff team. We got what most of us wanted, a new coach who appears to have excellent credentials and who is fresh to the organization. Let’s enjoy the moment and forget about Staal, Kaberle, McBain, etc. and see what the new guy can do. Let’s concentrate on being supporters. We do not help him by rehashing the past over and over. We help him, and the team, by regenerating enthusiasm for seeing some competitive hockey.
I’m not trying to lecture, I just want all of us to give this move a chance and enjoy it while we can. Then after giving the new guy some time, we can chime in with our expertise. Let’s Go Canes!

and i also agree we need for the new coach to get organized and get His house & team in order..anything else or comments we as fans would make ..will not help the team get to where we know it can be…

Still stunned that JR actually made the move. Good luck Captain Kirk, please play the kids and make the games exciting. I don’t need to see a winner every night, in fact this is a tough week so I don’t expect a single win. What I do want is to see hustle and a system that lets our passing D men set up our forwards. I want to see a team that looks to be trying, and I want to see Eric Staal look like he cares. I want to see Cam Ward not in the net every night. These are simple requests. Go Canes!
