Stars At Hurricanes: Game Preview

The Carolina Hurricanes, (5-5-3) licked their wounds a bit on Saturday, as a couple of players were missing from the ice during practice while recuperating from the 5-1 beat down they took at the hands of the Washington Capitals the previous night.  Eric Staal and Chad LaRose attended practice, but took a "maintenance day" and did not take the ice.

The Canes were preparing for their matchup against the Dallas Stars, (9-3-0) on Sunday afternoon at 1:30.

The Stars come into town with a little less than usual rest time between games as well.  The Stars defeated the Colorado Avs Friday night, 7-6 in Dallas.

It's going to be guess work right now how Paul Maurice sets up his lines for this one, or even who he will start in goal.  The coach also hinted that he could change up the defense.  Jamie McBain had a tough night, (-4) against the Caps Friday  and there is some speculation that Derek Joslin might get his first start of the season.

Will Cam Ward get a break and could Brian Boucher get a chance to start at home with a fairly fresh team in front of him?  Boucher has yet to win this season, but each of his starts have been on the road for the second game of a back-to-back sequence.  Ward would be getting less than a 48 hour break since his busy night against the Caps, although the Canes are off until Tuesday night when they play in Jersey.

Team captain Eric Staal is still trying to get on track.  Staal has a league worst -14 and is currently tied with Brandon Sutter, Tuomo Ruutu, and defenseman Jay Harrison for sixth in scoring on the team.

Will he start, or will coach Glen Gulutzan give him a break?

Their backup is Andrew Raycroft, who also has yet to win a game this season.

The hiring of Gulutzan has certainly paid dividends for Dallas so far and FS Southwest writer, Steve Hunt elaborates.

Stars a tougher team to play against.

According to our partners over at Defending Big D, the forward lines could be as follows:

Eriksson-Benn-Ryder
Morrow-Ribeiro-Burish
Nystrom-Fiddler-Dvorak
Barch-Dowell-Petersen

Steve Ott is out of this one because of a hip pointer.  "Big D" will have more information about the Stars if you need it.

In case you missed them, there were a few recent local articles published today that are worth checking out.

Kurt has his latest take over on Hurricanes Beat

Peter has some analysis of the Caps game at The Raleigh Examiner

As always, Chip has the inside scoop from today's practice at Canes Now

The Canes lost both battles to the Stars last season, 4-1 and 2-1, although they are 6-2 against Dallas lifetime at the RBC.  Staal is a career point a game player against the Stars, (eight points, 5G 3A, in seven games).

This game will not be televised by FS Carolinas. You will have to get tickets, watch Center Ice, or listen in on 99.9 The Fan.  We will have our game thread loaded for bear and ready to go at 1ish.

Watch Benn Find a Benn for Canes

The Canes are close to being a very good team. Imagine how good the Hurricanes would be with Benn on their team. One thing is certain. Other teams would not let teams hammer their stars after the whistle the way Skinner is treated. One more player with the attitude of Ruutu who also drops the gloves would make an enormous difference. Ryan Johansen is that type of player. One problem is that unless some draft prospect emerges this season, the 2012 draft is light on power forwards. On the other hand, Nail Yakupov looks to be one of the most exciting prospects in a long time. Looking at the NHL league standings, it wouldn’t take that much of a total meltdown for the Hurricanes to wind up among the cellar teams. Columbus is awful this season; but other teams are in reach of the Hurricanes. Columbus seems to have decided it is time to “fail for Nail.”

I would say they are not set in stone…

If anything, Kaberle needs to sit if Joslin plays. Mcbain had one bad game, Kaberle hasn’t done much right since he’s been here. That wouldn’t make much sense to me. Especially against a team that is coming off a game in which they scored 7 goals.

by jbcanesfan26 on Nov 5, 2011 11:47 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

They will never sit a $4mil player….vet. Never. Never. Never. (And yes I know they did sit BrindAmour several times).

Several times? Thought it was once maybe – a game in Pittsburgh, then someone (Samsonov?) was hurt and he went back in. But overall your point is correct. And McBain will sit.

I stand corrected. They sent him home on that west coast road trip. Technically, didn’t sit.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

For those traveling to the game today, avoid Hillsborough Street and Blue Ridge Road. The City of Oaks Marathon has those roads shut down mid-day, which will affect you getting into the RBC Center.

Details of the closures on on the Hurricanes site here.

Yes, I’ve been reading that.

Blue Ridge Road (southbound) from Reedy Creek to Wade Avenue exit: 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Does this mean that Blue Ridge Rd exit off of Wade is open? So not clear.

Would be a good one to win

1. Stop a losing streak before it begins.
2. Beat a 9 win team early in the season. 2 of their loses against the Kings.
3. Tampa plays Florida, Winnipeg plays Rangers. All are within 1 or 2 points of us. A win keeps us in the mix for 8th place overall, could get us 3rd in the division.
4. The roller coaster goes up again and Caniac morale could soar until our next game which is a long 5 days away.

Better start Ward

Best way to stop a losing streak is to have Cam Ward in net then. He gives us our only chance to win this game.

From @icechip – Ward in goal. Joslin to play, McBain to sit.

by Carolyn Christians on Nov 6, 2011 11:48 AM EST reply actions

I don’t get why McBain is sitting. Yes he was piss poor last game as was A LOT of guys but he’s been doing good things on offense from the back end creating plays and chances. A helluva lot more then worthless Kaberle has been doing. What a waste of $$$$. Call Columbus maybe we could package Kaberle and some prospects for Nash as Columbus needs a shake up too.

McBain has been terrible on offense

Might wanna look at Nash’s start before you begin wishing for that.

+1 for Mo

Ballsy decision, IMO. The percentage play would have had McBain in w/ coaches saying “it was only one bad game”, blah etc.

Harrumph

by ivyleager on Nov 6, 2011 11:53 AM EST reply actions

Ballsy?

Or routine. Subbing one junior dman for another. If Joslin is healthy he earned playing time the way he played last year. Now sitting Kaberle, that would have been ballsy.

by surgalt on Nov 6, 2011 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

and sending a message to Kaberle to pick up his game…but many messages can be said to a few players….

by whalecanes@s... on Nov 6, 2011 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Ballsy to sit Kaberle? To sit a $4mil players will earn the coach no love from the GM who signed the sob in the first place. No, Mo wouldn’t do that.

by ivyleager on Nov 6, 2011 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

I think the Canes need a 7-6 win. Get some players out of offensive slump (particularly Staal) and force them to keep attacking the WHOLE game. We know what Ward can do, we need the offense to gain some confidence and keep it going for a full 60 minutes.

Some managers manage using the carrot, Mo manages by using "The Stick."
