Hurricanes Add John MacLean To Coaching Staff
Not long after his long-time teammate Ken Daneyko tweeted it, John MacLean was officially named an assistant coach under new Carolina Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller. We are awaiting confirmation on the roles of the current assistant coaches and will update when we receive that information.
The release from the team is after the jump.
Hurricanes Add John MacLean to Coaching Staff
Former NHL player, assistant coach and head coach joins Muller behind the bench
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has hired John MacLean as an assistant coach. MacLean joins Head Coach Kirk Muller and Assistant Coaches Dave Lewis, Rod Brind’Amour and Tom Barrasso in the team’s coaching offices.
"I’m very pleased to add another character leader to our coaching staff," said Rutherford.
MacLean, 47, spent nine seasons as a coach in the New Jersey Devils organization, including seven years as an assistant coach. The Oshawa, Ont., native served as head coach of the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2009-10, leading the Devils’ affiliate to its best-ever record and first-ever playoff berth. He was named head coach of the New Jersey Devils prior to the 2010-11 season, but was replaced 33 games into his first season as an NHL head coach.
Drafted by New Jersey sixth overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, MacLean played 19 NHL seasons with the Devils, Sharks, Rangers and Stars, totaling 413 goals, 429 assists (842 points) and 1,328 penalty minutes in 1,194 career NHL games. A two-time NHL All-Star (1989, 1991), MacLean won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995, and totaled 83 points (35g, 48a) and 152 penalty minutes in 104 career Stanley Cup playoff games.
MacLean is the Devils’ all-time franchise leader with 347 goals, and ranks second in New Jersey franchise history with 701 points. He was a teammate of current Hurricanes Head Coach Kirk Muller with New Jersey and Dallas, as well as with Canada at the 1984 World Junior Championship and the 1989 IIHF World Championship.

coolio
this season is shaping up like a petri dish, which actually i have no problem with. considering the alternatives, i’m excited to watch us go in a new direction. hopefully with a new system and players TBD on the ice, we can field a more competitive team and gain some confidence going into next season.
LET'S GO CANES -- THE SEASON AIN'T OVER YET!!!
coolio ...yes
I agree. This is the kind of stuff we have been asking for. I am personally more interested in seeing trades that bring us picks and open up slots for our prospects. Is there anyone out there that is not excited about seeing a team like Edmonton take the ice these days? I understand that the Oilers filled seats even in the early days of the rebuild, and that we cannot reset exactly like they did. However, let’s face it…we have not made the playoffs and have a pretty decent stock of young talent. I think you let Boychuk finish they year as Staal’s winger. I think you play Dalpe on the other side. I think Bowman comes up to fill a top 9 role. Who goes?
Tlusty, Larose, Poni..
I can get excited about a young team on the rise. I have said this for months. Fill the seats by marketing excitement and offering even better deals.

Tlusty
I wouldn’t want to see them move Tlusty. I like the way he plays and I could see him regularly putting 15-20 a season in off the third line. Plus, I like the way he and Sutter work together. I’d much rather see them move guys like Poni, Stewart, Larose and Brent who are average to good players, but can be replaced by in-house (read: cheaper) options that open up the coin purse for a little Top 6 spending. Also, I think these guys may not fit Muller’s system, which if he keeps it like Montreal is faster, more puck movement and suited more to guys like Boychuck and Dalpe.
And then maybe even move Boucher to a contender. Honestly, he’s not getting that much time or really even outproducing Peters’ numbers from last year. Why not get a late round pick and shed a few dollars?
Just my opinions

San Jose has a sort of a weak bottom 6 and their PK is 27th in the league. They also have a little bit of money to spend this season, unlike year’s past. They might be a good place for a LaRose, Dwyer, or Brent; but all we would probably get in return is a 3rd round draft pick.

Really?
I am used to the glorification by now, but you’re convinced that Muller was the exclusive architect to the Montreal teams on which he was an assistant coach?

based on Captain Kirk’s musings on the David Glenn show he is fond of LaRose’s work ethic, so I don’t see him going anytime soon…

Calling Edmonton Style
I agree so completely with the idea of creating an Edmonton approach at Carolina. Trade some veterans for picks and bring up the young prospects. It is all about talent as the starting point. The Canes are great with third and fourth line players who can fill in on the second line. The Skinner/Ruutu/Jokinen line can score against any defense. Staal is Staal. It is a huge mistake to try to shape the team around his slump. Give him some talented young players and let him play the role of Captain and mentor. It will mean jettisoning a couple of forwards and that will be sad for them; but it will make the team better now and certainly in the future.
big problem with that: even though Edmonton finished dead last the past 2 season they still sold out every game. Pretty sure if that were the case here we’d only 6K per night. I agree that’s the best way to rebuild.

I agree. I don’t think this market could handle that. I think the Canes need to find a balanced approach. Keep some key players, make some trades, sign a couple of free agrents, and play a few prospects.

Two Top Six Forwards; One Defenseman
The two top six forwards are needed; and it is feasible over the course of next year to get there without huge trades. Assume the Hurricanes finish 28th. They will likely have the ability to pick Yakupov, Grigorenko, Forsberg, or Galchenyuk. Any of those four forwards should have a quick and positive impact on the team. In all likelihood Dalpe or perhaps Rask can also fit in a top six role sooner rather than later, even assuming I am totally misguided in my view that Boychuk is top six material. On the defense side of things, there are both Ryan Murphy and Brian Dumoulin who should be impact players sooner rather than later.
In addition if Lewis is able to work more with McBain, he has the ability to be a major contributor. McBain’s issues I believe are largely conditioning based. He needs to add muscle and to come to camp more NHL elite fit. Hopefully, being scratched is making a point without killing his confidence.
This market hasn’t been able to handle the approach trying to split the middle with the faux rebuild these last two years where you’ve got a mostly low-budget veteran team with a couple of prodigies as exceptions. That’s left the Canes at the bottom of the barrel with a team that can’t score or defend and a lot of fans becoming ex-fans in a hurry. Kaberle is the perfect example of spending on an over-the-hill vet to get better fast and getting burned.
The Canes may not get better unless they go all-in, one way or the other. Either ship out prospects and picks for Whitney-caliber vets and pay the salaries, or ship out vets for prospects and picks and get better in a year or two. But if they go with vets, the vets have to be able to play. They can’t be 4th liners and has-beens.
If the Canes had gone all-in with a rebuild after the 14-game losing streak, hired a coach who can handle young players, talked about building a bright future and invited people to come see a young, fast, talented team grow, I don’t think attendance would have been any worse, and things would be starting to look a lot better now.

You'd kill any chance you had at walk-up attendance with an admission that winning no longer mattered.
This market won’t come see an AHL team skate against NHL opponents.

This market won’t come see a terrible mostly veteran NHL team skate against NHL opponents either, not even with an exciting player like Jeff Skinner in the lineup. The team has to be good to succeed here in a big way. The question is what’s the fastest way to make it successful?
We are two years into a failed approach that tried to avoid really rebuilding and left us with a lousy team that nobody wants to watch unless Muller can work miracles by unlocking talent buried in the system. Odds are, there’s not enough talent and he can’t work miracles.

FWIW – A sellout in Edmonton is 15,000 or so. That’s below our season average.

they’re going to put some crazy attendance #‘s for the WJC this Christmas. You probably know this, but to be able to buy tickets you have to go through a lottery first, if you’re lucky to win you still have to pay arm & a leg.
I did hear that – it’s pretty wonderful (and somewhat fanatical) but still very cool for the players to be part of that.

I read somewhere that the average viewing population (TV) for a NHL game in the U.S. is something like 300,000. The average in Canada is 2.5 million. 10% of the entire country’s population. These numbers aren’t correct, just a general guess about something I remember reading years ago. The point is, their house could seat 75,000 and they would still fill it. Their pool to pull from, ie, interested fans, is much larger. I’m surprised with those numbers U.S. Hockey has even survived. If I was an owner that insisted on a sure bet, my first priority would be a Canadian hockey team. PK needs to make it snow here like 2 feet every month so we’re all stuck inside watching hockey.
by coastalcaniac on Dec 1, 2011 12:36 PM EST up reply actions
good point, that’s all they really care about up there. Edmonton supports the Oilers, Oil Kings (WHL), the Crusaders (AJHL), the Saints (AJHL), Traders (AJHL), and all of their midget AAA teams which draw pretty well (200-500/game). There’s nothing even close. I can barely find a bar to play the volume for a Canes game in the Triangle; up there, I can barely find a seat to watch a game.
Its interesting to see that sport so ingrained as part of the culture, much like baseball once was here. There is no way to quantify the reverence shown to the sport there.
I believe in strength. I believe in unity. And if that strength, that unity of purpose, demands a uniformity of thought, word and deed then so be it.

its cold
there’s ice..everyone has some kind of link to a hockey related or skating event..pond hockey..whatever..if I could have small rink in my yard, I would…just not moving to the GWN.
"Forget about style; worry about results."
Bobby Orr
Plus they don’t have Baseball like we do (as our semi official national past time—hockey is theirs) We compete with Basketball, which every gym in America has on their gym floor, and every playground—we have a lot fewr rinks and frozen pond…. (heck even in upstate NY where I grew up the ponds don’t freeze over as long and solidly as they did when I was a kid…) We compete with NASCAR where everyone from the south knows about cars… We have much larger college sports programs.
So it’s a little different here.
Well as bad as the media exposure is for the Canes its still 100 times better than what they got 10 years ago when they first moved to the area.
Many of the regular nightly sports reports wouldn’t even mention the game, or perhaps just mention the final score with no hi-lights. It would follow College basketball, then HS basketball…
I think the population was ahead of the media and eventually the media caught up.

ESPN says Edmonton is 16,839 and are at 100%. We are currently below 15,000 and I’m sure Edmonton’s revenue is higher than the Canes.

More attendance data.
Our average attendance is down 1,000 fans per game vs. last year. The entire NHL is down 400 fans per game vs. last year. Average attendance in the NHL is at 91% of capacity while we are currently just below 80%. We finished last year in 20th place in total attendance and currently stand in 24th place. Our attendance is looking like our standings in the league, close to the bottom and trending down.
And blowing up the team won't help those numers out at ALL.

Team income isn't just the gate.
Luxury box revenue in Edmonton, tv and radio advertising revenue, logoed apparell, etc., likely dwarf ours.
Yes. Its not about butts-in-seats. It’s about dollars per seat. PK tried Northern pricing here the first couple years and it just didn’t work.

Attendance is only a small part of revenue. Even if the canes sold out every game at current prices, they may not turn a profit.

attendance is the biggest piece of pie and drives everything else, but you’re right you need all the other stuff.
Attendance times price per ticket. If you look at TO for example, its not just their attendance but their average price per ticket is so much higher.

This is interesting. Now we have a a bunch of defensemen and assistant coaches!! I remember McLean as a player, but not too up on his coaching style, strengths, etc. Can anyone provide a scouting report on what he’ll bring to the table? I would assume this will keep Barrasso up in the birds nest.
I did a lengthy C&C Monday with all sorts of stories on why Muller was so sought after last June. Good place to start.

… another fresh, outside approach. And let’s face it. The bar isn’t set too high! The power play sucks, team isn’t scoring and we are near the bottom of the rankings in many categories including the standings. Only question…. where are the trades?

I would think is more defensive minded, makes me wonder what Muller thinks/thought about Lewis….

Hurricanes Braintrust
I don’t begrudge the new coach for bringing his guys, but is it just me or do the Hurricanes have an abnormally large braintrust? Rutherford, Francis, Wesley, Brind’Amour, Barasso, Lewis, Maclean, Muller.
Just throwing new hockey minds at it isn’t going to fix our problems. They aren’t going to turn grinders into scorers.
At some point it’s about the players.
by plus2 on Dec 1, 2011 11:27 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
Not you plus 2
The Canes have an abnormally large braintrust at this time. Remove JR and Francis from the list since they are front office. Wesley and Lewis seem redundant, Barasso’s main responsibility seems to be keeping Boucher from being bored to death, Brind’amour spends as much time with the little Hurricanes as the NHL squad, Maclean is Muller’s choice of the bunch, likely the teacher’s pet. Unless a major part of the group’s time is spent in Charlotte or scouting the NHL there is fat on the budget here. MacLean’s hiring suggests other’s on Mo’s staff may take the fall with Mo.
Another thought, who on Mo’s staff was Mo’s choice? Except for Lewis and Barasso the others retired to behind the bench. Barasso and Lewis are easily labeled JR cronies. Is it worth noting that Mo had his staff assigned to him not picked by him?
Wesley doesn't have a systems or coaching input
Wesley is for personnel development for the Defenders—primarily prospects. He is not part of the coaching staff as far as who plays, what system, etc.
Suggesting that Maurice had no hand in the makeup of his staff seems a little baseless.

The Honey Badger has a new friend...
They got Honey Badger Muller a new friend. Lets solve our player problem by loading up on coaches. Where is Paul Maurice when you need him – he was real good at running off assistant coaches.
This is day 3 of the Honey Badger’s reign as head-coach – and he still hasn’t won a game yet. In fact, he’s lost every single game he’s coached in the NHL. When will PK and JR realize their mistake and bring back the awe inspiring Paul Maurice.
Tick-tock, tick-tock.
This might be funny if the season wasn’t so horrible and if there hadn’t been about a dozen posts on the Canes facebook page just like it…
Does the Honey Badger have a Facebook page too?

Cynicism can be such a subtle play toy
Did caniacmum miss that? For those of us who don’t use facebook it was novel and brought a chuckle. I say MacLean makes Lewis odd man out. Lewis started the season at his daughters wedding and could have stayed there. Our defence wouldn’t have been worse for the absence.
Brind’amour may be the odd man out. Muller keeps talking about commitment, we’re only getting 50% from Rod.
That makes sense. I think everyone wants him around, but half the time doesn’t seem very effective. I commend him for spending time with his kids team but he really shouldn’t do the Canes job only for home games. I think it’s hard to preach playing for eachother, dedication, commitment if you’re not there.
Could be wrong though, it could be Lewis out.
What does that even mean?
He’s going where he’s assigned.

A little confused...
How many coaches do we need? Don’t we need more better PLAYERS?
So now we’ve got Kirk Muller, John MacLean, Rod Brind’Amour, Dave Lewis, Tom Barasso.
Does Brind’Amour move back upstairs to the luxury box? Does Dave Lewis go?
Glen Wesley is a defensive prospects guy isn’t he?

As far as Maclean goes, as a former head coach for an AHL team that he did tremendous things with (at least from my understanding), maybe he was brought in because of his ability to work with the young guys coming up from Charlotte. I mean, eventually those guys will be here, hopefully, and he has shown a knack for training the youth. Just a thought.
How about these lines . . .
MacLean, Francis, Muller
Daniels, Brindy, Kron
S. Willis, ? ,T.Rowe
D.Lewis, Wesley
Gordie Kinear, Burt Marshall
Barrasso, Rutherford, Stefan, Tracy – in net (we’ll have to ask one of these guys to take of the goalie pads to center the 3rd line.
All staffers with NHL experience!
Well, if Rutherford wanted to help mitigate Muller's inexperience with some good, old-fashioned insulation...
This would certainly seem to be a good move.

You're missing the other side of this!
With John McLean on our coaching staff, if the RBC Center is invaded by terrorists (think Die Hard movies), we are covered. Plus, that John McLean made things happen!
Hopefully one of these offensive coaches can sit down with Staal, and one D-coach can work with Kaberle, or I’m wondering if they need a sports psychiatrist – sometimes, you try too hard and get in a rut.
