Shanabanned: Andy Sutton Suspended 8 Games
As the video shows..... Brendan Shanahan and company have suspended Andy Sutton 8 games for the hit on Alexei Ponikarovsky Wednesday night in Edmonton.
From the story at NHL.com, the details of the huge financial hit associated with this verdict:
Having previously been suspended within the past 18 months, Sutton is classified as a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. He therefore will forfeit salary based on the number of games (82) rather than the number of days (185) in the regular season. Sutton will forfeit $207,317.04. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
No mention of the knee-on-knee delivered to Eric Staal, nor the open ice check on Jeff Skinner.
The Carolina Hurricanes are in Toronto through Tuesday, and are set to practice in a local outdoor rink at Ramsden Park Sunday at 11am ET.
Today, Coach Kirk Muller was on HNIC intermission programming and gave a brief update on Skinner. The 10-minute ★★★★★ Muller segment starts at the 1 hour 40 minute mark at this link . He is asked in the first couple minutes "How's Skinner?" He answers "He's good, he's good," and then they move on to the next topic. Quickly.
The N&O's Chip Alexander tweeted he was en route to Toronto today to join the team there. Hopefully he'll have more on Skinner's status and the rest of the crew then.

That is classic. Thanks for the great laugh!
Good move by the NHL. I couldn’t believe how many fines and suspensions this guy has and he is still in the league. He’s obviously try to hurt people on the ice. Dangerously stupid.
I cannot take credit for that pun – it has been used plenty by others. Another popular on is the Shanahammer. Glad to spread the latest puck vernacular though.

I know you’re big on twitter, do you follow @NHLShanaBan
its a fake account obviously, but it puts out some hilarious tweets mocking Colin Campbell, NHL tough guys, and hockey in general
I haven’t yet – but I’ll do it now. Thanks.

Kinda surprising that they only suspended him for 8 games, when he committed the act his sixth game back from an earlier suspension, the check was a textbook charge, the check was also a textbook elbow-to-the-head, the check was also a textbook boarding, and he has a highlight reel of extremely similar checks.
I was personally expecting 10+ games. I’m guessing if Poni was injured, he would have gotten that.
I checked and that is not the case – he gets credit for “time served” and will be back Dec 31.

Chip just tweeted that the team will not be practicing at the outdoor rink, but instead will be at the ACC this afternoon.
The weather is cold and breezy but not sure if that’s a factor.

Sutton will forfeit $207,317.04.
First time I ever saw a $207K hit……..he might have to turn in his Ferrari…….
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I’d be curious to know if that is the largest ever.

Ask Chip? He can get inside of the pay wall at Elias? I am trying to remember another “Big Name” suspension that would likely carry a hefty amount but coming up blank.

per Wyshynski, Wizniewski’s suspension this year was around $536k in associated “fines”. (aside: say those names 10xfast)

My first thought was to google Chris Pronger. He was suspended for 8 games in 2008. According to this article he forfeited over $600k.

Chris Simon’s 30 games in 2007 cost him close to $300k (this article isn’t exact on the number).

Todd Bertuzzi’s suspension in 2004 cost him over $500k (the Canucks were also fined $250k).
