N&O: Canes trade Tomas Kaberle to Canadiens
Chip Alexander is reporting that "The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenseman Tomas Kaberle to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Jaroslav Spacek, general manager Jim Rutherford said today."
Spacek, 37-year-old defenseman, is currently was on the Habs injured reserve with a UBI, having been out since November 16. UPDATE: He was cleared for contact yesterday and is expected to play tonight in Winnipeg.
According to Capgeek, he is in the third and final year of his contract with a salary of $3.83Mil/year. Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller was assistant coach with Montreal while Spacek was there.
The official word from the Canes came out a little while ago - it's up after the jump.
Canes Acquire Jaroslav Spacek from Montreal
Tomas Kaberle traded to Canadiens
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired defenseman Jaroslav Spacek (YAHR-roh-slav SPAH-chehk) from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman Tomas Kaberle. Spacek will be available to play with the Hurricanes tonight at Winnipeg (8:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports Carolinas HD, Hurricanes Radio Network).
"This deal brings a solid, veteran defenseman to our team for the remainder of this season and allows us more flexibility with our roster moving forward," said Rutherford.
Spacek, 37, has earned three assists in 12 games with the Canadiens this season. The Rokycany, Czech Republic, native is in his 13th NHL season and has scored 77 goals and earned 266 assists (343 points) in 846 career NHL regular-season games with Florida, Chicago, Columbus, Edmonton, Buffalo and Montreal. He has added four goals and 14 assists in 61 career Stanley Cup playoff games, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final with Edmonton in 2006. Spacek has represented his native Czech Republic in several international competitions, including three Winter Olympic Games. He was drafted by Florida in the fifth round, 117th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

EXCELLENT!
It is not about getting Spacek is return, it is about getting rid of Kaberle and that contract!
definitely
I can’t believe somebody bit though

Is it surprising that it was Montreal? Same team that took Gomez’s “unmovable” contract and is now regretting it. Someone must really be trying to lose their job there!

Yeah, I can’t believe that Montreal would take that deal. I had pretty much thought Kaberle wouldn’t be able to be moved and a buyout would most likely be the only result.

Anything to get Kaberle off the team is good. He has zip heart, nada, and seemed to be a player who had his money in hand and was going through the motions. It’s one thing to have lost a step with age. It’s entirely inexcusable for a player to take advantage of the fact that NHL contracts are guaranteed and to coast.
Agreed… But I think he will find his game eventually. Maybe he just got a little too high, I think we forget that he just won a Cup and probably enjoyed his Summer a good deal instead of preparing for this season as JR mentioned.
The Canes can absolutely not be the ones taking that chance though, especially at his salary. Great move by JR.
All I want now is a 1st line winger to be brought in or a commitment from the top that we are staying the rebuild course and will be picking up one of Yakupov or Grigorenko. A 1st line winger should be the Canes sole #1 priority.
Even if Kabs comes in in shape, and returns to form, he really doesn’t help as a true defenseman. We’re loaded with Puck moving potential as Faulk and Mv Bain are showing. We have Murphy in the future. Dumoulin, Biega, Alt, etc coming along. We free up room for them with this.
Plus, we have the option of choosing whom to keep—or trade dealine deal. kabs would have been a tough deadline pick up for someone who would be saddled with him for two more years. Now we have Gleason, Allen, Spacek all done at year end—all perfet pickups for someone at the deadline. All trying out for whom we re-sign for next year, or whom we all dump and start fresh.
All good options for us, better than having an expensive three year Kabs contract. Now it frees up the money for a real forward JR has been hemming and not acting on.
Lastly, Prior to the last CBA/lock out year, JR was reluctant to sign or keep many longer term contracts. I think he’d like to limit himself again unless the personnel involved are true keepers… this helps there as well.
Rutherford made a mistake.
Rutherford corrects mistake. I was cringing when he signed Kaberle.
That's Chuck and the letter 'K'
Chip is quoting Rutherford to say Spacek is going to play tonight in Winnipeg. Habs press couldn’t get quotes from him at practice because he was headed to the airport.

Huge Kudos to JR
For a budget team like us to be able to move that contact and cap hit for the next two years is huge.
Good luck Kaberle – hope you find your game, we’re just not a team who could afford your cap hit and had the luxury to sit and hope you regained form.
Don’t know much about Spacek and if he will be able to help at all but moving Kabs contract for the next years is a huge win by itself!
"I'm not going to waste my time with Tuukka Rask" - Cam Ward
Agreed. This is about clearing money for the next 2 years and it was an amazing move. Spacek isn’t half bad either if he can stay healthy, will provide a veteran presence and should be much more reliable in his own end.
I really, really hope JR makes good on his recent mentions of adding significant talent to the team moving forward so that we can compete with our new Conference. The Canes will be absolutely eaten alive if we can’t add at the VERY least a top-pairing D and a top-line winger through either Draft, free agency, or trade. For the first time since the Cup run it seems he is actually making strides to form this team into a Cup contender.
Wooo Hooo
as and while this IS Business…i too am glad Kabs is gone…and while as decent people no one here really wishes evil or bad things to happen to anyone ( and even a Sutton type) Kabvs while trying to wake up..just was not a good fit here…and i’ll stop there..Thank you again Miss Carolyn..that’s good news to hear …as a Canes fan…

Technically I think this move makes the team temporarily weaker as Kaberle has actually been playing decently on the offensive side of late and Spacek will be very rusty.
I agree though, I don’t think JR is done.
No, but realize JR isn’t a get it done at once guy. He’s got whels and gears in motion and he knows he has the rest of the year, trade dealine deals, initial re-signing of player we currently have who will need contracts, the draft, and then free agency.
He will be working a long range plan for the entire season and summer even now.
If he can get peices sooner he will. If he has to wait, he will. JR has always shown patience. (sometimes that costs us when he fancies a player and can’t have him till a few years later—he gets him, but maybe no longer at peak performance…)
Again, now way Kabs is worth a top six forwrd to anyone…. This deal sets us up better for both trade dealine deals or for future FA acquisitions and frees budget for next year.
We have to take salary back as well to maintain above Cap mins. This does that while still lowering payroll enough to afford adding a Forward prospect like Boy or Dalpe…
WOW
I say again, WOW.
Bad signing, but tremendous move to rectify the error. With Spacek being in the final year of his contract he would be a candidate for a deadline trade, thus fully erasing the original signing.
wow
Spacek and Erik Cole. We traded Cole to Edmonton, but it was after Spacek had already left. Now we trade for him, and get him away from Cole once again. I think he is hiding from cole. I think those of us who remember the cup run know why. I also think this was a silly post. Carry on my wayward sons……

I cannot remember a year where JR has been this brutally honest about the team and himself……..I actually find that very encouraging.
However, you have to wonder if he will ever be trade partners/friends/close again with the Habs GM for trashing his decision like that publicly just minutes after the deal was done…….

Respect level for JR just went up. I really like the straight shooter mentality. His stock went up when he hired Muller, now to fix a mistake he made that didn’t seem likely to get fixed, that is some good work.
Let’s hope he’s not done!
It is dangerous to read tea leaves but I put up a fanpost in the right hand column yesterday about all of this because it does appear he is not done. Some of this might suggests a total rebuild but I am not sure. Still trying to get a handle about what all of these “hints” mean. Really a fun exercise to try to interpret them.

Will be interesting to see if he’s going to lay the groundwork for a total rebuild this season or wait for the off season. With the whole realignment thing happening next season I’ve gotta believe that this team is going to go through some pretty radical changes in order to compete in the new division.
Megaweapon… Megaweapon… Megaweapon…
Some More Surgery Coming
I don’t think it’s a total rebuild, but I see some dramatic surgery coming. Jim Rutherford is not a happy man with this team. He started with the most noticeable guy who lacked fire, Kaberle. I believe he is still going to make some player moves. He threatened to blow up the team last year at a game in Toronto. I don’t think he is going to back off that statement now.
It will be telling to see who is next to go. If it’s a fan favorite, he’s set his jaw and is going to rework the team.
We are just to close to the Cap Floor. Would have to take on more Sacek type 1 year deals to work in a trade for picks. Kinda like Florida taking on Sammy to stay above the floor and dealing us Allen. That was a straight clear off the books kinda deal that set them up for this past summers moves. Funny that I remember people saying that Tallon was insane for the moves and players he took on. Looks to be working well for him.
Remember that JR and Tallon are really close and have made moves repeatedly over the years. You have to think it opens up some new trading with Fla since they will no longer be in our division.
it also seems to be very consistent with one constnat JR trait: Don’t piss him off. JR said he was guaranteed (probably by Kabs agent) Kabs would come into camp in shpe and ready to play. Didn;t happen. Jr has mentioned it a couple times this year.
You get on JR’s bad side, you don’t last on this team. He starts looking for ways to get you gone—might take time, but he’s been pretty consistent in that as well over the years…

Good job by JR for clearing that contract off the books for the next 2 years.
Spacek has a limited NTC so I Cant imagine him getting moved again this year. He is a UFA at seasons end but his 3.8 mil will be needed if we move one of our other UFA for pics as we are only 2 mil away from the Cap floor. Have to take on players with Higher contracts to trade any of our UFA guys for picks or prospects. Puts us in a limited position.
Suuu-weeee
Make way at the trough for another porker. Damn, but that boy is chubby. You don’t want to be sitting next to him on the airplane – or in the locker room – he’d be in your space all the time. I just hope he doesn’t look as bad as Kaberle did when Kane blows by him tonight.
You comment obviously refers to the image at the top. If you had read the link provided by the Habs fan above you would have seen a recent September, 2011 image and this quote:
“But on Monday, an obviously lean and fit and eager Spacek stood in the team’s practice rink dressing room positively beaming, in his best camp shape since he arrived with the team as a free agent in September 2009.”

Speaking of Harrison.. Spacek is a stay at home d man.. I wonder if this has something to do with Harrisons injury being more than we thought.
Or maybe JR realized that you can’t have a defense full of puck-moving defensemen.

Kaberle in Canada
Maybe Kaberle just does better in Canada. Maybe this is a good move for him and he will regain his form. In played pretty well when with the Leafs and here are his stats with the Canes this season in Canada.
Tomas has played 4 games this season for the Canes in Canada. He has 0 goals, 4 assists, an EVEN rating, 1 hit, 6 blocks, and 6 shots. In 25 other games for the Canes; he has 0 goals, 5 assists, a -12 rating, 8 hits, 21 blocks, and 32 shots.
"We've got to risk implosion. We may explode into the biggest fireball this part of the galaxy has seen, but we've got to take that one in a million chance."
-- Captain Kirk in Star Trek 'The Naked Time'
Could there be more considerations going to Montreal?
Why should they take on Kaberle’s 3-year contract in exchange for an expiring contract? I understand they’re swapping a stay-at-home D-man for a puck-moving D-man, but this deal looks brilliant on JR’s part precisely because it isn’t a fair exchange. The Canes win big.
This is funny!
Pierre LeBrun said. “Heard from an NHL GM who was absolutely shocked Carolina was able to move Kaberle’s contract.”
Maybe there is more new blood on this board than I thought, but I have a hard time believing that so many people are wholly unfamiliar with Spacek. The dude has been in our conference since 06-07, so it isn’t like we don’t see him much. Plus he was a part of the Edmonton Squad we fought for the cup.

I’m vaguely familiar with him but I know I never watched him closely at all when we played them. If I was paying attention to their D-men in particular it was usually Markov. That’s probably a good thing though, most people mainly notice a defensemen when they screw something up, lol
"I'm not going to waste my time with Tuukka Rask" - Cam Ward
The best part of this is that we don’t have to buyout Kaberle at the end of the season and pay him for the next 4 years, like what we did with his brother.
"We've got to risk implosion. We may explode into the biggest fireball this part of the galaxy has seen, but we've got to take that one in a million chance."

Rutherford = Psychotic Genius
How the hell did he pull this deal off? Great move, sure a few year ago Kaberle was among the best defensemen in the league, but he has looked dreadful in his short time with the Bruins and Canes. Spacek brings more to the table than KAberle did and he’s a free agent after this season (though at 37 not sure how much time he has left)
Not sure what Montreal was thinking, first Gomez and now Kaberle.

Does JR keep a "you owe me" bag
he keeps on every deal he made or failed to make as a GM over the years to cash in when he really needs to??
Puck Daddy amazed
The best that could be said about Kaberle during the Bruins’ Cup run was that he wasn’t a liability. The best that could be said about Kaberle during his time in Raleigh was that he’s been traded to Montreal.
NHL12 Trade
I don’t even think, I can do this trade in NHL12..
Making sense of the trade
Why did Montréal take this trade, Kaberle for Spacek? A big-money team can afford to gamble were a small budget team cannot.
I think JR would have paid Eric Cole four and a half million a year for two years and maybe three years but he wouldn’t for four because it was too big a gamble: $18 million big. I agreed with him at the time, although now we see how much we miss the "ignition switch", and we also realize that if we had kept Cole we would have kept Corvo and would not have had Kaberle.
JR decided to gamble on Kaberle because he had to spend up to the minimum and hoped we’d have a really good defenseman for three years. And then had to let Corvo leave to make the money work. But he couldn’t gamble on Cole for four years. Now he’s seen that this defenseman gamble isn’t likely to work out, and had a chance to cut his losses. On the other hand, Montréal is able to gamble that Kaberle will come around, and maybe they’re a little bit desperate as well. They can afford to buy out players (and note if they buy out Cole after two years then their total risk was $15 million not $18 million).
Is the Montréal GM’s job at risk? If so he may be even more willing to gamble to try to get a player he hopes will come around and make more of a difference then a steady guy like Spacek could.
Montreal hopes for more out of Kaberle than Spacek
Montreal is obviously more focused on the here and now. Spacek is overpaid as well at $3.8M, and the difference in salaries was not that significant for a team 1) in a relatively big hockey market, and 2) which does not yet consider itself already out of the playoff picture.
What doesn’t make sense is Montreal’s taking on Kaberle for 3 years. Spacek is a one season deal for us. With Kaberle and Scott Gomez, the Habs have two of the most overpaid players in the league.
He once played for the Oil!

Just playing for the Oil that season got him the dubious honor of being traded for Kaberle to a team at the bottom of the standings.

I have all the confidence in Rutherford.
Kaberle’s contract wasn’t bad at all. JR didn’t give him a no trade clause. That would have been horrible!
It Is A War Out There!
The hockey and sports internet sites are filled with comments on this trade. As you can imagine, a lot of it is negative to down right nasty. However, once in a while a really funny comment surfaces. This one certainly brought a smile and keeps me from taking myself too seriously.

If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.
