Brett Carson placed on waivers
According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN and CBC, the Canes have placed defenseman Brett Carson on waivers. Carson was recalled from Charlotte on February 15 in the first hint that a trade was forthcoming (and it came to pass three days later when Ian White was dealt to San Jose).
Since Carson is not waiver-exempt and he was not recalled under emergency conditions, he must clear waivers to be sent back to the Checkers. If you own a Joni Pitkanen jersey, this is good news for you, as it essentially confirms that the Canes do not plan to trade Pitkanen before Monday's 3:00 trade deadline. Carson will learn his fate on Monday at noon.
In his most recent callup, Carson played in four games, tallying no points but recording a +3 rating.

I agree, he seems like he could help out on the third pairing for a lot of young teams in rebuilding mode. Plus he makes the league minimum, so his potential as a serviceable defenseman (at least) and light price tag seem like an enticing opportunity for a pickup.
Of course my opinion of Carson might be skewed, not sure how he’s viewed by other teams/gms in the league.
I don’t really understand that move in the sense that Carson is very solid. I think Joslin looks to be a strong, aggressive, dman with a strong shot. Joslin is impressive; but why not keep Carson up for 20 games rather than risk losing him? I hope he isn’t claimed off waivers.
I’m kind of confused. JR said he was keeping 7 defensemen for the rest of the season. He must have had a change in heart and decided Joslin is a full time player. Still, I thought it would be safe to keep Carson.
I think we’ll still keep 7 defensemen, but the 7th just isn’t here yet. Should be clearer by the deadline.
Still not a crook!
That… Or the Canes are simply happy with Joslin and they stand to save some $$ by sending Carson down (or save even more if he is picked up).
Never underestimate the fugality of the Canes.
Carson doesn’t have enough FIGHT in him for now. Plus JR said within the next 48 hours he wanted to get a Dman. It has now been 24 hours so somebody has to move to make room.
Staal for ALL-STAR CAPTAIN
Where did he say that?
If we acquire a D-man it will more than likely be a depth rental. Nothing to get excited about.
I heard him say in the same 99.9 interview in which he was talking about Samson being the most NHL ready this season and that he would like to move a LW to make room for him.
He said then that he would like to add another defenseman, if possible.
Here we are now...entertain us.
I’m sure we would all like a defenseman

So Skinner-Ruutu-LaRose haven’t been getting it done and the solution is to stick our 2nd highest scorer on a line with LaRose and Samson and leave him there? Demote Skinner to a 4th line role while creating a new second scoring line with Tlusty-Sutter-Jokinen?
Sounds full-proof… Maurice is such a genius.
Hard Choices
The good news is that Maurice is now saying publicly what I think has been clear for a while and that is that LaRose is dragging down Skinner and Ruutu. Without Staal being available, things get complicated to move LaRose away from Skinner. It’s not perfect, but I’d suggest:
Stillman/Ruutu/Cole
Jokinen/Skinner/Dwyer OR Jokinen/Skinner/Tlusty
Tlusty/Sutter/Samson OR Dwyer/Sutter/Tlusty
Samsonov/LaRose/Bodie
Dwyer has to stay on the 4th line. For as poor as his faceoffs are, they are MUCH better than LaRose at center.

LaRose as Center on Fouth Line
I think with the short amount of time the fourth line is on the ice, it would be ok to have LaRose take some faceoffs. I don’t see why Bodie couldn’t take some faceoffs. He is strong as an ox or maybe stronger than an ox.
With Staal’s absence, I would probably do this;
Stillman/Jokinen/Cole
Skinner/Ruutu/Tlusty
Samson/Sutter/LaRose
Samsonov/Dwyer/Bodie
That’s a lot of “S’s” down the left side!

Ummm…what Mo actually said, per Chip, is this:
Jeff Skinner will open at center tonight with Jerome Samson and Chad LaRose on the wings, Maurice said.
“We may even leave it when (Staal) comes back because that line of Skinner, Ruutu, LaRose haven’t had it going,” Maurice said of using Skinner at center. "We’ve been looking to kind of move that around anyway so we kind of killed two birds with one stone.
No question that line has just had no chemistry at all. And, with teams now concentrating on roughing up Skinner, it’s no surprise to see him flanked with some distracting grit, even if both are overslotted.

I don’t think LaRose and Dwyer/Samson are being overslotted. I think Skinner is being underslotted.
LaRose – Skinner – Samson is a borderline 3rd line… Probably more like a 4th line.
Carson is what he is; a cheap 3rd pairing guy that is not going to offer much. He’s not bad, but he not really good either. Based on our defensive prospects (Domoulin & Faulk), Carson really doesn’t have a spot on this team unless Harrison goes and Harrison has been a pretty pleasant surprise this season & especially over the past couple of games. The Joslin guy might be better than I originally thought, but I’ll give it a few games before coming to a conclusion.

That is such an uniformed comment; it makes me wonder if you’ve been paying any attention to Brett Carson’s play. He has been more than just solid; he’s been the best defensive defenseman that we’ve had on the team over the last 3 months. Sure, he’s been up and down, but he has been quietly consistent….just since he’s been up here he’s been a +3….overall, he’s just been unspectacularly solid…we’ve had nobody else like that all year, Gleason included. Joslin is two games into a premature decision by JR…
Might be a good time to sneak him downward while every one is distracted chasing their dream D-man acquisition, instead of waiting until after the deadline when disappointed suitors might be looking for damage control.
Here we are now...entertain us.
Thinking the same thing myself Elsker. With all the waiver action this afternoon (and potential action leading up to Monday’s deadline), maybe JR is hoping Carson will sneak by unnoticed. I, for one, hope this is the case since I really like Carson and could be really steady for us if given more than half a chance.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
My first thought as well. Good timing with all of the other waiver-wire activity.

I’m pretty certain most NHL teams have Carson-esque players in the minors.
For a GM to snatch him away from us would violate what I’ve always felt was an unwritten rule that you don’t collect others waiver-wire players, especially prospects, unless you Really want them. I’d be surprised if someone Really wants Carson enough to risk JR’s ill-will.
So less than 72 hours until the trade deadline expires. Do we see Joni moved or not? If not, how much are we willing to dish out to sign him to a new contract? Based on Big Buff’s contract, we’re probably looking around $5 to $5.5 million a season.

Joni’s staying IMO. I’ve been saying it for the past few weeks, and it looks even more likely with every move JR makes.
He is probably worth $5 – 5.5 million a season. But we might not be able to sign a deal for what he is worth. Joni is probably fine with being payed fairly and staying hear…but his agent will probably urge him to test FA and get some more money (and he gets more commission).
If JR doesn’t know he can get Joni for at least 3 years for $16 million to $16.5 million then we need to let him walk, because anything more is just out of our range and, quite frankly, more than we should pay for his spectacular, but inconsistent play…Joni is a powerhouse and I love him, but we have to be realistic…between Corvo and Jamie, we’ve got the offensive side of things covered….hopefully we can figure out the definsive side of things
Let’s hope the Globe and Mail’s James Mirtle isn’t calling the shots in Toronto or Carson will be finishing the year with the Leafs. Just tweeted:
Given Leafs need depth on defence, wouldn’t be worst idea to claim Brett Carson on waivers. Big, young and solid enough for third pairing.

He’s not calling the shots, but he usually is pretty close to the mark when he mentions names.
Nothing is certain though… Burke isn’t really known for being active on the waiver wire.

I’ll be asking around tomorrow. Leafs are trying for a top four defenceman, but this could be a backup option.

I’m blaming myself for this. I remember you had an exhaustive list of free agent defensemen last year, prior to the deadline, where you were ranked them. I remember commenting that Brett Carson deserved to be higher than Nick Wallin and Aaron Ward (which he did). Obviously, I should have let him languish under the radar, and hope you never were the wiser. :hangs head: ;-)

Carson and Mr. Mirtle
It’s all the fault of @HMof2 (just kidding). Alas, here’s hoping that my impression of Burke is correct, i.e., he’s an arrogant guy who is vastly over-rated. I can’t see him claiming Carson on waivers because he has his sights set higher. My take is Burke will realize that Tom Rowe is a great defensive coach and if the Canes believe Carson still needs work to the extent he is put on waivers, Burke will stay away.
I’ve liked Carson very much. I am puzzled why Carson can’t see that he has to add real physical meanness to his game. He’s a big guy with a long reach and plenty of strength. He ought to be the first guy into the fight and ought to be laying waste to some of the guys taking cheap shots on the forwards. I liked the fact that Joslin cleared the crease and left no doubt he was ready to defend his forwards. I don’t see Carson as the kind of rough and tumble defenseman who would get Burke excited. Carson is a more cerebral dman, who uses positioning and his height/wingspan to defend. He is not a punishing hitter, doesn’t fight, and isn’t a guy who wipes the crease by overpowering his opponents. Don’t mistake my point. I think Carson works very well in the Canes defensive system; but would be a bad fit for Burke’s style.
Bottom line...
…this move, to me, means there’s an inbound defenseman on the way by Monday.
Here we are now...entertain us.
Why? Why do we need to get a d-man back. What we need back in a solid D-man prospect (Teubert anyone?). If we trade Joni we need picks and prospects back. We shouldn’t worry that we get a defenseman back, because that’s immaterial. In the end, any real replacement that we get back will be in free agency in the summer. Either we trade him and live with that decision knowing that we have a strategy moving forward or we suck it up and sign him…
I think what Elsker is suggesting (please correct if necessary) is that JR has a deal in progress and there is definitely an inbound defenseman. The Canes don’t want to keep 8 defensemen. They had to send either Joslin or Carson down. Both would be exposed to waivers. They decided to risk Carson. That probably means either that they already know that they prefer Joslin to Carson or that they think Joslin adds something to the mix of defensemen (new guy included) that complements the rest of the crew better than Carson does.

Carson’s the top defenseman in Charlotte these days. Certainly as stay-at-home types go. Rodney is not likely to get far in this organization from what I can see. There was an article from the Canes that mentioned that the Checkers are shorthanded on the back end with Casey Borer out for a while. They need to be at full strength if they are going to make a strong in the playoffs which is another high priority for Rutherford.
The way they were so squirrelly about clarifying his waiver status might be an indication they didn’t want to advertise that he might be coming up, because it wasn’t really as complicated as they made out. Doing it today also means that with the chaos of Monday coming up, he is that less likely to appear on anyone’s radar at the last minute.
And the way he coughed up the puck leading to the first goal against tonight sure did a lot to make sure he gets to Charlotte in one piece.

If you own a Joni Pitkanen jersey, this is good news for you, as it essentially confirms that the Canes do not plan to trade Pitkanen before Monday’s 3:00 trade deadline.
Doesn’t it just mean that if Joni is moved there will be a NHL blue liner coming back either in that deal or in a second deal? That always seemed to be the logical move to me, a la Pothier coming back for Corvo last season. I think this move is more about cost saving, and if they’re trying to save what, maybe $100K in salary difference between the AHL and NHL right now, doesn’t that mean there’s more financial pressure than we thought? Doesn’t that mean the chances of paying Joni what he can get on the free market are less than many would hope?
Don't trust me. I have psychological issues.
I agree that this move says nothing to me about Joni’s trade status.
Here we are now...entertain us.
Here's why I would say it's about money.
Carson’s NHL salary is $500K. His AHL salary is $105K. Keeping him on the NHL roster for the rest of the season costs the org an extra $91,500 (based on 19 of 82 games of season remaining which means $24,300 left to pay in the AHL and $115,800 salary remaining in the NHL).
The Checkers played tonight ending a 6 games in 9 nights road trip. They don’t play again until Friday, March 4th. If this move was about helping out Charlotte than the org could wait and put Carson on waivers on Tuesday. If I’m not mistaken a player acquired via waivers after the trade deadline can be used for the regular season only and not the playoffs. This means if Carson was put on waivers Tuesday he’d be almost worthless to any team close to the playoffs meaning his chances for clearing were very high. (If this assumption is wrong someone let me know).
So, if this move isn’t about helping the Checkers what else could it be but money? If that much money is an issue, as much as $115K or as little as $25K, how can the team afford to sign Joni?
Don't trust me. I have psychological issues.
I'm completely wrong
It’s completely about helping out the Checkers. Turns out that Carson can’t be loaned to the AHL affiliate after the deadline unless he was called up on an emergency basis.
I should know better to post this late at night when I’m already sleep deprived.
Don't trust me. I have psychological issues.
Further analysis after sleep
So, after getting some sleep, and reviewing the waiver rules a bit here’s what I think is happening:
Carson has been put on waivers Saturday so he can clear by noon on Monday and be eligible to be loaned to the Checkers. If he doesn’t clear waivers before the deadline he isn’t eligible to be loaned to the Checkers. If he clears before the deadline the team still has the ten games/30 days window to decide if or when to loan him to the Checkers. This means that by putting Carson on waivers the Canes are actually giving themselves the flexibility to move Carson down to Charlotte or keep him up on the NHL squad.
I don’t think this guarantees that Joni won’t be traded. If Joni is traded the Canes will have to get a defensemen to fill his spot, but where that defensemen plays in the org is undetermined. If the blue liner picked up were more of a prospect then Carson stays up and the prospect fills the hole in Charlotte. If the blue liner picked up is more of a salary dump then that player fills the hole in Raleigh and Carson fills the hole in Charlotte.
It seems to me this move gives the team more options to move Joni as opposed to less, assuming Carson clears waivers.
Don't trust me. I have psychological issues.
Thank you for saving me a bunch of time trying to figure this one out. I think you nailed it.

Sorry about the wrong path earlier. The problem is every time one of these waiver issues comes up I find out some new wrinkle in the NHL waiver rules. I honestly think there are only 20 people in the world who understand the process completely.
Don't trust me. I have psychological issues.
Interesting about the deadline correlating to AHL assignment. That’s exactly what’s going on. Explains why so many were on the wire yesterday.
So that also means Samson is here for the duration now. That’s super from what we’ve seen his last several games.
Assuming Carson goes back to Charlotte, that gives the Canes only 6 D for the balance of the season, unless there’s a trade or an injury requiring a recall. And 13 forwards unless there’s a trade or 2 injuries).

As I understand it, Samson isn’t guaranteed to be up here the rest of the season as he isn’t waiver eligible. The inability to loan players only applies to players who would have to pass through waivers to be assigned to the AHL.
Don't trust me. I have psychological issues.
If he’s not waiver eligible, than yeah right fershurr. I just thought he was there already. ( I had him playing 3 seasons as a pro when I went through the roster last summer). Are you sure – I trust your information.

And does it not matter that he's on a two-way deal?
If your contract includes a financial impact of playing in the minors, why is it considered a “loan?”
