Cam Ward: Our 2010-11 MVP
I was watching the Rangers get drubbed by the Islanders today (which now makes them as easy to pass as Buffalo, assuming we beat the Sabres on Sunday) and Henrik Lundqvist got pulled after a subpar performance. Lundqvist, just like Carey Price coming into his brief night in Raleigh, was riding a long streak of consecutive starts and was starting the second of a back-to-back. Both Lundqvist and Price are considered Vezina contenders this year, and both wilted under the pressure, despite desperately needing wins to stay in the playoff picture.
Now consider that Cam Ward leads the league in games played and consecutive games started, has faced far and away the most shots, and made the most saves; all while maintaining a +.920 save percentage. Then think about the insane amount of back-to-back games that the Hurricanes have had to play this year. It's hard to put a number on it, but I'd have to say that Wardo would also be tops in the league in grade A saves.
I never really thought Ward lived up to the proverbial "hype" following his Con Smythe performance, despite never having anything close to a top tier defense in front of him during his years as a Cane. That being said, this is by far the best season of his still young career and I think the example of Lundqvist and Price above should give everyone here a bit of perspective on how great Cam has truly been despite the heavy work load he's had to endure in order to keep us in the playoff hunt. The fact that Ward can maintain such a high level of performance despite playing in so many games (many of them back-to-back), and face so many shots (many of them grade A chances) puts him in a class above most others. I think most NHL analysts and even some of us here at CC have greatly under-appreciated the season Cam Ward is having. With any "average" goaltender playing for us, we'd probably only be contending with Florida for last place in the Southeast.
It's a shame that GAA is factored so heavily in the decision of awarding a Vezina trophy winner, and that not enough importance is placed on the team defense in front of said goalie. It's also a shame that Cam plays in a small, non-traditional market and most of "hockey nation" hasn't watched and/or doesn't care about his remarkable play this season. The biggest shame though, will come when Ward isn't even mentioned in the same breath as the eventual Vezina finalists. Don't get me wrong, if I were voting, Tim Thomas would be my Vezina winner without a doubt (I mean he's just been incredible this year), but Cam Ward deserves to at least be considered. One thing is for sure though. He's the Carolina Hurricanes' MVP this year.
I just hope he has enough fuel in the tank to add another Con Smythe to his trophy case this Spring.

Cole-train!!
Ward’s been real good, but Cole has been rejuvenated this year! a true power forward!
Vezina
It’s true that our woeful team defense has buried Cam on pg. 2 of the stat sheets for GAA and even his sterling save percentage has a lot of major names ahead of him, victim once again to earlier games in the season when point-blank shots from the slot were being allowed to occur multiple times a game.
It’s only as that team defense has tightened lately and pushed the shots to the walls, where the square footage of exposed net favors the positionally correct goalie, that he’s climbed to Tim Thomas numbers and beyond (a goalie that enjoys such a defense every game, by the way).
Probably more of a Hart candidate for us, our MVP for sure, at least in my mind.
However, his long-shot chance at the Vezina rests in the fact that this particular vote is taken by the 30 GM’s of the league, who all know (and no doubt covet) Cam well.
Plus, the true criteria of the award is not digitally based, but is more of an analog determination, as captured within the NHL’s description of the award:
“given to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at this position”
For all the reasons you have cited…that’s Cam. :-)

Wardo has been on fire of late...
But I don’t know that I agree that he’s necessarily gotten better as the year has gone on, just the defense in front of him. Before the All-Star break, he was at .920 for save % and now he’s at .924 after. Even month by month, he’s been sorta up and down (though obviously more up than down):
Oct.-.923
Nov.-.916
Dec.-.941
Jan.-.897
Feb.-.914
Mar.-.933
He’s also had no more than one shutout in any one month, so it’s not like he’s rode any particularly hot stretches either.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. It’s the defense in front of him that’s at least now partially doing it’s job that’s allowing him to use the positional and reaction skills he has.
Nowhere did I say he’d gotten better as the season progressed. Only that his numbers had gotten better as the defense finally started limiting shots from the slot area.

I went for a dark horse.
Skinner has been more than we ever hoped for, and Ward and Staal have delivered their typical All-Star level performances, but the guy who’s really impressed me has been Ruutu. He’s probably going to set a career high in points, and he’s doing it while ranking second in the league in hits. He comes to play every night and really sets the tone on the defensive end of the ice while also having plenty of room to contribute in the area of goal-scoring. Wardo’s been great, especially with the number of shots he’s had to see, but he probably played as well or better in ‘08-’09 on the way to the ECF. Hopefully we can have him see us that far again!

Skinner
without his scoring we’re not even talking about playoffs. gave this team new life.
My opinion on Maurice remains the same.
I hear the train a com'in....the Cole-Train
Had to vote for my man Cole he has been on fire this year….should have worn the "A""
Skinner was a very close second…..(ok I admit I voted twice)
Roll Canes Roll
While Skinner’s scoring has been absolutely crucial this season, without Ward’s play the Canes would be contending for a lottery pick, not a playoff berth. If he played for Boston of Vancouver, his numbers would be Brodeur-late-90s-good. I would hate it if the Canes wasted such an amazing performance by missing the playoffs.
Erik Cole has turned it on as of late, but how much of that is attributable to his reunion with Stillman?
