Below are some of the off-the-wall predictions that I made about the Canes before the season started. The bolded type are updated remarks about my predictions. These are absolutely worth nothing, but I thought it might be a little fun to see how I did.
I thought it might be fun to share a few of my predictions for the 10/11 Hurricane squad. Some of them are really what I think will happen and others are just for fun. I'll let you decide which ones are which. Please feel free to comment on any and/or share your own.
2010/2011 Canes Predictions
Skinner will score his first official NHL goal in the 2nd game in Finland. It won't be the winner, but the Canes will win the game. Well Skinner scored his first goal in the 2nd game in Finland, but as a shootout goal it isn't considered "official". It also was a game winner. So I'll be generous and give myself 1/2 a point here. :)
The Canes will have a rough start of the season and enter their first true home game with a record of 2-5. The Canes started out better than I thought (4-3) before getting their first true home game. So I was wrong about this.
Cole will get hurt before the end of October and will miss at least 12 games this season due to injury. Cole has been a monster this season and has yet to miss anytime; amazing. Wrong again for me.
Bowman will have a decent year; scoring between 10 & 15 goals and look like a solid 3rd line checking winger. Bowman has only seen limited time this year and has not scored any goals. But IMO, he has looked pretty good in his time and I do believe he will be a solid 3rd line winger.
Sutter will resign with the Canes for 3 more years and less than what he truely deserves. This has yet to be determined, but could still possible.
Samsonov will start the season in the top 6, but gradually move down the depth chart and finish his time with the Canes on the 4th line. This is sort of right. Samsonov moved up & down the lineup as the season went along, but he ended up being shipped out at the trade deadline.
Dalpe will have a solid first NHL season; he will score 20 goals and get somewhere in the 45 point range. This one might need to be put on hold considering that Dalpe didn't play that much in the NHL. Really I was dead wrong on this one, but I still believe that Dalpe will be one hell of a player when Mo wises up and actually plays him in the top 9.
Between Joni and Babs; one, but not both, will be traded by the trade deadline. Right on this one. Babs left Carolina pretty early in the season and Joni stuck around to the dismay of some.
By mid-December, the RBC Center will be rocking with the chant; "Mo Must Go!" I guess the RBC Center never "rocked" with the chant, but the Caniacs are pretty evenly divided on this subject.
Staal will play over 80 games this season and score 35+ goals. Looks like Staal will play over 80 games this year and 35 goals are possible. He should have been approaching 40+ goals if not for an extended slump after the All-Star Game.
Between Cole, Samsonov, LaRose, and Kostopoulos; three, but not all, of these players will be traded at some point during the year. So close, but no cigar. Only 2 of these players were traded and Cole & LaRose could very well be resigned for next season. I guess only time will tell.
By mid-January, Dalpe and Skinner will have played well enough to justify them getting consistent time in the top 6. Half right should get me 1/2 point. Skinner pretty muched prove instantly that he belongs in the Canes top 6. Like I said above, I do believe Dalpe will get there when given a fair shake.
Skinner will have a very good rookie campaign; scoring 22 goals and approaching 55 points. Should be Calder winner Skinner has better numbers than these with 3 games left. A few people really debated me on this one; I'm glad to have this one in the win column.
With the Hurricanes on the outside looking in at the playoff picture, JR decides to recycle yet another former player and trades for Ray Whitney. This was obviously a joke, but not surprisingly JR did recycle a former player at the trade deadline (Stillman).
Jussi resigns with the Canes for 2 years, $5.75 million. This has yet to be determined, but could still possible.
Between Boychuk and Tlusty; one player will not be in the organization come September 2011. This has yet to be determined, but could still possible.
The Canes sponsor a building of a home for a needy family in Wake County. They decorate one room by wallpapering it with Coach Mo's old hideous ties. The family is very happy to have a home until they walk into the tie room. They are so taken back by the sight, one of the children begins to cry and they decide not to move into the home. I don't know if this happened or not; but if they did this project, I'm sure the family would take those actions.
Staal and Skinner seem to develop some real chemistry by February 2011 and things look real promising for our team's best players. These two really never developed the chemistry I had hoped they would. If looks more like the future has these two on different lines.
The Canes finish the season in 9th or 10th place in the Eastern Conference, only 4 points from the final playoff spot. It appears the Canes are heading toward 9th place and could be around 4 points out of the final playoff spot.
