Press Conference In Charlotte Tomorrow To Announce Hurricanes Preseason Game
According to a recent Charlotte Checkers press release, Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford will meet with the media tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Charlotte to announce the details of a Canes preseason game to be played in the Queen City this coming September.
There have been some reports indicating that the Hurricanes would be playing an exhibition game next season at the home of their AHL affiliate, but no details had been released yet. Tomorrow we will know more.
This will be the first time Rutherford has been in front of the media since the Hurricanes were eliminated. Will he address anything else?

...make a safe bet
…and schedule it against someone else besides the previously reported Atlanta right now.
Yeah, Raleigh will be seeing the Miami Heat, while Charlotte gets a bunch of guys they probably already see on the Thrashers AHL affiliate. Exciting!
I think playing Atlanta in Charlotte is great…a Canes/Thrashers rivallry would be awesome..six hours apart..Charlotte in the middle.
But with the drama in Atlanta right now….it’s quite possible that it’s against the Winnipeg Thrashing Jets.

Most likely it could…but you have to juggle dates etc. Does Nashville have a game scheduled for the 25th of September, etc.
I am sure the team has some form of a contingency plan, however scheduling it vs. Atlanta would show that at least the Canes believe that the Thrashers will be in Atlanta for at least another season.

Personally
I don’t think “anything” aside of the one pre-season game…will be mentioned by JR…now the press corps will be asking but i expect JR to be like the president…and waddle off or several major “no comment at this time” thing…but we shall see what we shall see …huh ??
What did you do during the playoffs ? Go Checkers !!!
Division Games
Both the NHL and NBA typically play their pre-season games against division opponents. There’s no exception here with the Bobcats and Heat both being Southeast.
In the words of W, it’s good strategery. You’ll have a 2.5 hour drives for Raleigh fans, a 4 hour drive for Atlanta fans, and of course, the Checkers fans in Charlotte too. Very smart move to play Atlanta.
I don’t think Atlanta will go anywhere this summer – possible but unlikely.
Been hoping for a game like this vs. Atlanta for years – even at the old Independence Arena. Yeah, the Charlotte crowd would be more into the Canes…but if it can get the Charlotte folks aware of a rival like Atlanta,..and get them to go and cheer the team down in Atlanta all teh better.
It would help if we had more of a rivalry with Atlanta though. Then again so would both teams making the playoffs.
I get an odd feeling that we may see a replay of the Baltimore Colts in the upcoming weeks.

The backup plan...
…would likely be the Canes playing the Checkers. Not the same “wow” factor as 2 NHL teams, but many clubs do it now in baseball and hockey.
Nice. I have no interest in the NBA although the Bobcats would do better if located here in Raleigh.
On Atlanta….if they move to Manitoba, do they stay in the SE or even the East? Could Nashville be a new juggernaut in the SouthBeast?

They would move to the Western conference. The jury is out on who they move over. It is either going to be Detroit, Columbus, or Nashville. Detroit is the most unlikely of those three due to the splitting up of the Chicago/Detroit rivalry.
The problem with Columbus is that they would have to reorganize the divisions most likely as they would not fit in the southeast (we might get Philly in the SE…ugh). But they are in the eastern time zone, which is the key. Nashville isn’t in the eastern time zone, which would be annoying for all the rest of the Eastern conference as they are all in the eastern time zone. But Nashville is geographically close and would fit into the SE easily.
Detroit is lobbying hard
..however…Nashville being an hour behind isn’t really going to be an issue to the Eastern teams. What will be an issue is if it is Detroit or Columbus. That leaves only one Eastern Time Zone team in the West. THat’s why I think it will be Nashville…with geography the main influence though.
