It's official. The Carolina Hurricanes lost Erik Cole to a big market team with deep pockets on the very first day of free agency as the Montreal Canadiens signed him to a 4 year contract for $18 million.
Jim Rutherford said that they would not match the offer. The GM feels the team can still compete for the playoffs next season, even without Cole.
"Cole's leaving could open the door for someone else," said Rutherford.
The club was in the process of attempting to sign another experienced player and could also add someone else at a later date, depending upon who is available. The Canes could also rely on their youth.
We will have more thoughts in a bit. For now, how do you feel? Should the Canes have matched the Montreal offer?
