Hurricanes Announce Roster For Traverse City Prospect Tournament
The Carolina Hurricanes' entire six-man 2011 NHL Draft class will be among the 21 players the team will bring to Michigan for the Traverse City Prospect Tournament to be held Sept. 10-14, the Hurricanes said in a press release.
Highlighting the list are two defensemen: 2011 first round pick Ryan Murphy of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers, and 2010 second round pick Justin Faulk, who turned pro at the end of the 2010-11 season after winning an NCAA title with Minnesota-Duluth his freshman season. The team will be led by Charlotte Checkers head coach/general manager Jeff Daniels.
The Hurricanes join seven other teams in participating in the tournament, and will open play on Sept. 10 against Dallas at 4 p.m. They then will face St. Louis at 3 p.m. on Sept. 12, followed by a game the next day against the New York Rangers at 3:30 p.m. Each team will play one more game on Sept. 14, with the championship game being held at 7 p.m. The Hurricanes won the tournament in 2009, their first appearance at the annual event. The other teams participating in the tournament are Buffalo, Columbus, Detroit and Minnesota.
Carolina's tournament roster is after the jump.

i really like
what we have waiting to come up on defense. when you see all of them listed together like that its easy for me to get excited about the future of our d. also interested to see if j. staal learned anything from gary roberts over the summer.
traverse city
Have you heard if any of these games will be shown on line or the NHL channel?

This is a really good pick-up. Brent plays on the Saskatoon team in the WHL where I live. He’s got good potential and stepped up his play in the playoffs for the Blades. I was really surprised to see him go undrafted this year.
Yup.
Seemed like the kind of guy who has the talent to be a solid pro if everything works out right for him.

Faulk, Rask, Levi
Faulk, Rask, and Levi played very well in the tournament. Levi is huge and moves very well. He is almost impossible to move off his skates in the middle; and is very well coached. Rask showed a mean streak along with being excellent at his two way game. It seems as if the Swedish coach has very defined roles for his players. In the last game, however, when the game was on the line, Rask was moved up and played with the top lines to defend the lead. One thing in particular I liked about Rask is that after he got drilled, he bounced, found out who the player was that hit him; and the next chance he got to lay a clean hit, he found that player and bulldozed him. It reminded me of Ruutu in that respect.
I’m very glad to see Gregory Hofmann on the list – thought maybe that would be too difficult for him with his Swiss League schedule.
Speaking of European pros – should we read anything into Tommi Kivisto not being on the list? He is under contract. And he was on the list last year, and then didn’t make it for reasons I don’t remember. Here’s the preview of last year’s tourney to compare rosters.

Samesies with Hofmann. Was really hoping he’d switch over to the CHL for better tracking and exposure but at least we will get to see some of him here.
Interested to see where Rask ends up as well. Looks like either the CHL or ALL for him.

I just looked on Hofmann’s page at eliteprospects.com and they still show him at Ambrì-Piotta, which I thought I saw last month was being dissolved because of financial struggles. Hadn’t looked up anything recently though and I wondered what happened to his “rights”? I believe I saw that his current contract allowed him to move to North America this season at his own discretion. But that he had decided, based on feedback from both the Canes and his local coaches and family, that Switzerland was ideal for 2011-12….

Hofmann is a wild card in the sense that he could move to North America based on the insolvency of his team; but apparently, the consensus is he needs to fill out some more. Hofmann plays a very physical game and I’ve seen some video of him getting crushed in the slot only to bounce up as if he hardly noticed the hit. I tend to think he will take a little bit of time to develop physically; but he is a player to watch. I would not be shocked, however, if he catches the eyes of the coaches with his speed and work ethic.
Rask
From what i’ve understand, he’s not interested in the CHL

You've probably seen it...
But the latest reports indicate that he’d like to see if he can earn a spot in Charlotte, and may be willing to go to the CHL if not.

Exciting roster
Eager to see the draftees but also the reconditioned Jared Staal and healthy Mattias Lindstrom. Really eager to see how Levi looks.
It’s easy to envision pairings of Faulk and Murphy with defensive defensemen like Krueger and Rissanen. A powerplay with Faulk and Murphy should be fun to watch. Can’t wait to see how the coaches sort it out.

Exciting Roster indeed !!
and i had to laugh as i too saw visions of Faulk & Murphy checking bodies into the glass and putting the puck high & low glove side in the corners of the net!! Yes,YEs,YES !! I Be EXCITED !!! wished i could go and watch the Tournament…Thanks for for this infor..and as a suggestion Lee..try * for unsigned & ** for under contract..i have seen many “pro” contribitors do that sorta thingy..but i’m an old guy…what do i know…?? Go Canes !!
What did you do during the summer when the playoffs are over ?
Go Canes & Checkers !!
Heavy D, light on O
Not as deep in the forward corps as we’ve seen in past tournaments, but should still be fun to see two of our best young D’s (Murphy, Faulk) in Canes sweaters.
This is everybody’s impression and it’s unrealistic to expect this bunch to be on par with last year’s forward group with Skinner, Dalpe and Nash, but we’ll be seeing Rask, Hofmann and Lindstrom for the first time and Shugg is coming off a great year in the OHL. If Rask and Hofmann perform at the top of expectations and Shugg has taken a leap, there may be enough skill. And this year’s group of forwards is much bigger than last year’s. Lindstrom, Jared Staal and Brody Sutter are huge and Goodrow and Rask are pretty big too. It could be a tough bunch to keep away from the net.

Not as deep in high-end talent...
But check out some of those UFA bios. Those are kids with skill, and some have produced quite well for their CHL teams.

Very impressed with this roster.
I took the time to dig through the bios of some of the amateur tryout kids, and it looks like we got some quality kids signed up. I think this is yet another example of how much the prospect/development paradigm has worked its way into the organization’s thinking.
