Casey Borer signs in Czech league
HC Pardubice seems to be quite glad to have found a replacement for the recently retired Josef Melichar, as evidenced by Google's translation of the headline for the above story: "Pardubice found a replacement for Josef Melichar, Casey Borer is coming!"
Checkers defenseman Casey Borer has signed a one-year deal with HC Pardubice of the Czech league. Borer, who was playing on his second consecutive two-way one-year deal with the Canes, spent the last two seasons with the Canes' AHL affiliates, including 67 games and 15 postseason contests with the Checkers in 2010-11.

Maybe a low point in your career is being described as a replacement for Melichar.
Good luck to Borer over there. Czech Republic is pretty awesome.
Didn’t you just answer the question?
It has been a few years, granted, but just 5 years ago you could get a .5 liter glass of delicious pilsner for 10 us cents.
Dangerous, that.
Oh, I thought I missed something. I remember a pint being a buck. Plzen brewery was pretty cool. Food was terrible – every meal seemed to be mystery meat covered in gravy with cabbage and dumplings. I’m probably a little jaded, my trip didn’t go to well.
Budweiser, really? That part of the world they’ve been making beer since the 14th century and you opted for a Budweiser, nice.
It’s actually a legit Czech pils no longer called budweiser because of a legal battle.
Czech Budvar is what it’s called now.

Casey Borer
Borer was one of the best young defensive prospects in the Hurricanes system until he hurt his knee. His bad luck was further compounded by the compression fracture he sustained in the bus wreck while playing for the Albany Rats. It’s really a shame. Throughout the ordeal, he showed tremendous character. He deserves the best.
Makes me wonder
If Borer didn’t have bad luck if there would have been any need to fill a roster space for Troy Bodie.
I know the fans loved Bodie, but Borer would have been just as tough and been an assett defensively.

?
Borer wasn’t ever tough. He was always more of a positional, finesse defensive defenseman. He had six fights in four years of pro hockey.
Um, he was always in a scuffle when he was up here. But then again I never worried about watching how he played in ALbany Charlotte etc.

I hate to see him go,but
it made me wonder if 1: he was really happy here in the Canes Org & 2. maybe JR wasn’t gonna offer him anything worth staying around for…I too wish him the Best of Luck, but that little secret is one we fans may never know…But The Shadow Do !!! bwaaaaahhhhaaaa
Go Canes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What did you do during the summer when the playoffs are over ?
Go Canes & Checkers !!
He was a UFA due to being 25 with less than 80 NHL wgames played. It’s likely that no one offered him anything worth staying around in North America. He’s an average to below average AHL defenseman entering his fifth pro season…not really a hot commodity.
Then you never saw him skate/play in 2007-2008. It was only a few games but he was solid as a rock, a defensive-defenseman, and was a fluid skater. I figured it was only a matter of time before he was called up for good.

What does 07-08 have to do with what he was offered contract-wise this summer? 07-08 was before he tore his ACL and then broke his neck.
I have no quarrel with the fact that after the ACL injury and the compression fracture of his neck, Borer still has not returned to his pre-injury form. I thought you were quite harsh in your description of Borer, as if he had some fault in causing the bus to crash. He was one of the Canes top defensive prospects until those injuries. It’s sad for Borer.
My comment was directed entirely on what Borer’s level of play is at now and what that had to do with what he was offered this summer. I was replying to someone who thought that maybe Borer signed in the Czech league showed that he was unhappy here; I was pointing out that Borer was a UFA and was able to sign with anyone he pleased. His rights were no longer being controlled by the Hurricanes.
What caused his drop off in play is irrelevant to my point. I described him as an average to below average AHL defenseman…can that really be argued? If you’re disagreeing with me, you’re saying he’s an above average AHL defenseman.
Don’t get what’s with people getting offended by my comments about Borer. Calling an AHL defenseman and AHL defenseman isn’t an insult, it’s just a statement of facts.

Technically
You were replying to my post. But whatever, your point is well taken. The truth is that Casey Borer had a promising career and was being groomed to come up to the big leagues. That his back to back injuries squashed that chance is sad.
Harrumph
Really?
I don’t see any reference to the crash at all. It’s sad, but facts are still facts. He’s not an NHL-caliber player at this point.

Some Thoughts on the Language of Hockey Analysis
It has been occurring to me lately, and particularly with the increased interaction with players via Twitter, that the language of hockey analysis probably ought to share similar rules of etiquette as face to face conversations. In the course of thinking on the subject, I realized I was an offender – particularly toward Aaron Ward.
It made me wonder as well how many of us in our professional lives could claim the same degree of success and elite skill as the Hurricanes and Checkers players whose careers we are discussing. I don’t know how thrilled I’d be to have a group of non-attorneys blogging about my legal career. That thought has convinced me I need to tone down the language and write things about players only after imagining I am face to face with the person. It won’t change the ultimate conclusion, but it certainly will make me pause before lambasting anybody.
Funny you mention Aaron Ward. I can’t find a single instance where I ever seriously disparaged him (outside of perhaps a groan in a game thread when he took a stupid penalty, and trust me, I don’t discriminate in that regard).
I even took the photos for the very nice article Bob wrote season before last about Ward’s Warriors that was picked up by NHL.com.
I’ve always thought he was extremely articulate behind the desk, and very witty on twitter.
And yet, perhaps because I retweeted his snappy reply (which btw I retweeted because I thought was very clever) to a quip from you, I now find myself blocked from being able to follow him on twitter.

The work around is to just go to Aaron Ward’s tweets on Twitter if you desire to see his tweets. I thought his response was pretty clever as well. Sorry to have cost you the ability to follow AWard.
LOL but I don’t think I’ll be in need of a workaround.
