Carolina Prospects Drop Game One in Traverse City, 8-2
The Traverse City tournament got under way today and the Hurricanes prospects had a tough go of it against Dallas as they lost game one, 8-2. The "Junior Stars" scored just 30 seconds into the game, built a 5-0 lead, and never looked back.
Matt Mahalak was in goal for the first two periods and took the loss for Carolina. The Plymouth Whalers goalie and the Hurricanes' sixth round draft pick allowed seven goals on 26 shots. Free agent invitee Mavric Parks played the third period.
Highly regarded second round draft pick Victor Rask scored a powerplay goal for the Junior Canes. Tyler Carroll scored the other Carolina goal.
Kyle Hanlin traveled to the tournament and posted the following lines as well as game information on his running Live Blog at CH.com. You can check other stats at these links: Game Sheet --- Box Score
Forwards: Scott Pitt - Victor Rask - Jared Staal // Barclay Goodrow - Gregory Hofmann - Justin Shugg // Brody Sutter - Mattias Lindstrom - Zach Mitchell // Brent Benson - Tyler Carroll - Luke Hietkamp
Defensemen: Justin Faulk - Keegan Lowe, // Ryan Murphy - Rasmus Rissanen, // Justin Krueger - Austin Levi.
The youngsters will take on the St. Louis Blues prospects next at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

How'd they look?
I cancelled my cable subscription since I never watched it so I was unable to catch this game (unless there was a webstream I hadn’t heard about…). Was anyone around to watch the game and could they comment on it? Based on the stats alone we got smoked but was Mahalak left out to dry or did he just play that poorly. I noticed Rasmus Rissanen was the only even skater, did he look pretty sharp?

Only one game of the Canes will be on NHLNetwork – when they play the Rangers Tuesday (3:30pm and replayed several times in the 24 hours following). So all any of us have of the game vs Dallas is the twitter reports and the gamesheet.
The Rangers looked impressive, all over St Louis. (All the Rangers games are being broadcast by MSG Network which is then being picked up by NHLNetwork)

Panthers '011: This is what we've been waiting for...we get to overpay the core of a 2-14 team!
Well a tough start
but even if they don’t breing home a championship this year…at least the Canes management will get to see just how far along many of the players are…As well as who & what needs more work and the like. As many forget that not every player or group has all the tools 7 skills in placve all the time..while like any fans i am somewhat disappointed…but i see this thumping as a lesson to be ready and prepared the second you step on the ice..and if any player is not paying attention 1000% of the time…you will get out played.pushed to the side and scored upon and often…and from what i see..this looks to be the case…so inclosing..are we as fans just gonna die ..really freakin die if the prospects (new players0 and somne of the ECHL/OHL players donm’t live up to what we as fans are used to “all” the time ?? of course not..we just think we are !! Have a good day and don’t forget ..9/11/2001 never Forget!!

Go Canes & Checkers !!!
what was the deal?
8-2 is a big deal. unless it was a fluke?
levi and murphy had to have been on the ice a bunch, and 8-2 is a red flag?
i hope im wrong
"a bit of love"
context
From what I picked up from the Dallas side, many of their guys are regarded as just about ready for the NHL. I can’t think of anyone on our team who we consider at the level now.
Two years ago when the Canes won the tournament, they brought a much more experienced roster, including Brandon Sutter who already had a bunch of NHL games. Last year we had Skinner.
The point being, this is not necessarily apples-to-apples between teams, and this is the least experienced group Carolina has sent in the three years the Canes have participated. Particularly the Canes goalie, Matt Mahalak, who isn’t even the #1 for the Whalers. Last year it was Murphy, and Peters the year previously. If Frederik Andersen could have played, I think the results might have been a little less lopsided (?).
Dumoulin and Biega would likely be stronger since they are older than this group and have had a lot more ice time as team leaders than most everyone there – with the exception of Faulk.
The one I’m most surprised at (in a bad way) is Justin Krueger who is 24 and has a year in the Mens league in Germany and has done well at the IIHF World Championships the last 2 years. He was -4 yesterday and I can only hope that he’d forgotten about big ice since he played at Cornell.
Other than Jordan Staal and Justin Krueger these are mostly ’10 and ’11 draft picks.

First Game with Players Unfamiliar with Each Other
I’m not really very concerned that the Canes prospects were demolished in their first game. They had little time to practice together and some were much more familiar with the larger European ice. I am much more interested in seeing how the group progresses through the tournament. I was glad to see Rask score, and really was not surprised. Rask needed to get away from the rigid style of coaching he was receiving as well as the internal politics. It’s not dissimilar to the politics that kept Jussi Jokinen off the Finnish Olympic Team when he clearly deserved to on the team.
Any team can come out flat and get quickly overwhelmed in game one. If they get routed and embarrassed every game, I’ll be much more concerned.
Yes, any team can get demolished.
But it’s better when yours is the demolisher, not the deomlishee.

What I took away from yesterday’s game is that for all the hype we give puck-moving defensemen, we saw what can happen when you don’t have the balance to counteract a big, more experienced offense. Guys that like to rush and can score aren’t always willing or able to go into the dirty places, dig the puck out of corners, eat the puck, or clear out bodies from in front of the net. One defensive pairing the Canes didn’t try was Faulk/Levi. You can’t put them together on every shift, but I’d like to see us try them together once or twice each period to see what happens both even strength and PK-wise. I like Murphy/Risanen on the PP, too.
They're not starting Mahalak today..
Today’s lines vs St Louis.
Forwards:
Carroll-Rask-Shugg,
Hofmann-Pitt-Staal,
Lindstrom-Sutter-Schmitz,
Mitchell-Benson-Heitkamp
Carroll is the undrafted invitee who scored the 1st goal yesterday. He is currently w/the Guelph Storm coached by Scott Walker.
Defensive pairings – I’m thinking Levi/Murphy would be ahead of Lowe/Krueger (?) but this is the way Hanlin tweeted it:
Rissanen-Faulk,
Lowe-Krueger,
Levi-Murphy.
Parks in net.
Also, Justin Faulk is tournament Captain and the coaches again this year are Jeff Daniels and Geordie Kinnear. (of the Checkers)
Brind`Amour, Wesley and Barrasso are working with them at practices at well.

After 1 period, Canes up 1-0, Shots even at 6 each.
Goal was at even strength, Lindstrom deflection of Levi point shot. Levi paired with/Krueger just after a Canes Power Play. It was Lindstrom, Mitchell and Brody Sutter as forwards on the ice. Live game sheet here and Box score which offers auto-refresh.

Dissapointed in low shot total...
Are they trying the “defense first” mentality Mo prefers?? Because obviouslt in these two games the defense has been lack luster, but it seems we’re not generating much offense either.
One or the other would be OK, failing at both is disturbing.
sigh...what a spoiled bunch
some of us are…didn’t i see where Miss Carolyn said and it is true that the team this year was the “LEAST” experienced of the last 3 teams sent?? Hells bells what do people want next ?? A topless ‘stormy’ at every home game …inclosing..i don’t see on any of the critics the experience in coaching Hockey on their “resumes”…geez louise..lighten up …and if you think I’m being " offensive" now just count your blessings I didn’t see or read some of this earlier…I was really upset and was looking for any excuse to go off on somebody…In closing while and yes we all have our own opinions and this is still America where the Supreme court recently ruled that even ugly or mean sounding speech was still “protected free speech” but if you’re gonna rain on many of the fan’s parades…well get ready to get rained on as well…..and that fellow fans is how isee what was shown…

Go Canes & Checkers !!!
The Canes game at Traverse City tomorrow/Tuesday is now set for 3pm ET on NHL Network – if you ‘re setting your DVR. It will be replayed a few times tomorrow night, so don’t fret if you miss it. From what I can tell, no matter if they win or lose, they still go to the last place game to play for 7th place on Wednesday afternoon at 3pm. That game will not be televised.
I’m planning to set up a game thread if anyone is able to stop by while it’s on and discuss, ask questions, etc. I’ll be there.
