Star-divide

RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the roster for the team's 2011 training camp, to be held in Raleigh.

The Hurricanes have invited 56 players to their main camp, including six goaltenders, 19 defensemen and 31 forwards. The training camp roster, schedule and group breakdown are attached to this release.

Thirteen players who represented the Hurricanes during this week's NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, MI, will join the main camp: forwards Jared Staal, Brody Sutter, Victor Rask, Justin Shugg, Gregory Hofmann and Mattias Lindstrom; defensemen Justin Faulk, Justin Krueger, Ryan Murphy, Keegan Lowe, Austin Levi, Rasmus Rissanen; and goaltender Matt Mahalak.

The Hurricanes will open training camp with player physicals on Sept. 16, and then hit the ice for their first official practices at the RBC Center on Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The team travels to Buffalo for its first exhibition game two days later, taking on the Sabres at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19.

On Sunday, Sept. 18, the team will host its annual Caniac Carnival at the RBC Center, the season kick-off event which includes rides, interactive games, live music and an autograph session with select Hurricanes players. The team will also hold a Red-White scrimmage at noon, giving fans their first glimpse of game action at the RBC Center this season.

The 12th Annual Caniac Carnival begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m., and is free to all fans.

The Hurricanes' training camp concludes with a practice at the RBC Center on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Carolina opens its 2011-12 regular season against the Eastern Conference finalist Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at the RBC Center.

Thanks very much for posting the roster, Carolyn, and in such a readable form. It would take me a year to format the roster and groups half that nicely. By then there would be a whole new team.

It’s great that the Canes are bringing so many players in. Reading the list and looking at the 3 groups, it’s hard to believe the Canes won’t be much better this year even with the departure of Erik Cole. For one thing, the Canes have gone from having almost no big forwards to having lots of them.

One of the big positives about the 3 groups is getting pretty good first looks at some highly regarded European prospects like Rask, Hofmann and Lindstrom, longer looks at Justin Shugg and Chris Terry, a chance to see if Riley Nash has made progress, etc. With Dalpe, Boychuk, Bowman, Samson and Tlusty, that’s almost 4 lines of forward prospects with plausible shots at the NHL someday, not counting the next crop of Sutters.

Most of these guys are long shots at best, but their presence should ratchet up the competition among the guys at the top of the list. Older prospects may feel it’s now or never. That will be especially true if Rask looks great and wins lots of faceoffs against NHL opponents.

I can’t take credit for those pdfs – those are the official ones issued by the Hurricanes. However, the one I’m working on now will truly delight you. Should be ready soon.

Rask’s face-off ability is apparently pretty elite-level. That is the type of thing that could push a guy like him over into the NHL sooner rather than later on a team like the Canes who have plenty of FO problems. Good call.

Also – it’s not clear from the press release, but the Saturday practices are closed to the public because of the NCState football game and the associated parking requirements. First chance to see them on the ice is Sunday at 9:30 am.

Thanks for the list

A few things:

Joslin is #27 – is this our new Harvard Hitman?
Ponikarovsky is going to have to get a nickname (and hopefully he can match Marty Gelinas for clutch goals)

We have 3 Sutters, but only 2 Staals – what is the word on Stahl? He didn’t go to Michigan, either

Will look forward to seeing folks on Sunday.

And Carolyn, I can only imagine what you and Jamie are cooking up! My printer awaits…

Stahl was on the original list to go to Traverse City but I heard nothing of him at all there. I’m not sure if he was hurt or some other issue.

Ponikarovsky as Poni is the traditional way to go. But perhaps we’ll discover something else as we get to see him.

Tyler Stahl was indeed injured. Not sure of the details.

Defense intrigue

hmmm….young defensemen getting a look…big club already signed kaberle and resigned pitkanen…dave lewis brought on board to coach defense…..is someone gettin’ traded, or are the young guys being positioned to push an underwhelming unit? this is a very curious storyline to watch over the next few weeks.

Of Maurice, Karmanos said: "I’m happy Paul is back but he’s going to be judged the same way as any other coach. We need to win more consistently."

Shaone Morrisonn for Joslin straight up.

I'd have to imagine we'd want a pick to go with that deal.

Talent- and playing style-wise, it’s not a bad swap, but Morrisonn has been injury-prone, is expensive, and doesn’t have the youth and upside of Joslin.

All of the above, I'd say.

For the Red-White game, is it actually going to be those players as assigned to the Red and White group or do you think they are going to mix the players up for the scrimmage?

I asked that last night and was told it would be different by Michael Smith. Stay tuned.
