Hurricanes re-assign six, Ryan Murphy remains in Raleigh
The Carolina Hurricanes have re-assigned six prospects this afternoon, reducing the number at training camp to 49.
From CH.com
Forwards Gregory Hofmann (Ambri - Switzerland) and Mattias Lindstrom (Skelleftea - Sweden) have been returned to their European club teams, while forwards Victor Rask (Calgary - WHL) and Brody Sutter (Lethbridge - WHL), as well as defensemen Austin Levi (Plymouth - OHL) and Keegan Lowe (Edmonton - WHL), will join their Canadian Hockey League teams.
That Rask is returning to Calgary to play in the WHL for the Hitmen answers a summer of speculation by many from Sweden to Alberta as to where he would spend his next season. Other than clarifying Rask's next step, there are no surprises per se. Skelleftea was inquiring on bringing Lindstrom back to the SEL for another year. He is the only one of these 6 currently under contract.
Practice tomorrow will be two sessions, starting at 10 am and noon, at the RBC Center. Neither is expected to be a scrimmage game. The Charlotte Checkers Camp starts Monday, so we can expect significant cuts to the camp roster this weekend.

Is Murphy that good that he’s turning heads, or is JR just keeping him up with the big boys as long as possible for the experience?
Saw Chip tweeting about PM saying he’s impressed by Tlusty’s effort in camp. Don’t know what that means other than him sticking up for one of “his guys” in a stiff competition for roster spots. Hopefully the ex-Leafs will all be judged on performance and how they fit into the club’s plans, just like everyone else. That said, does Tlusty beat out Dalpe, Bowman, et. al. for a spot?

There are two spots open. Dalpe has pretty much earned himself one. Tlusty is beating out Bowman and Boychuk for the other. This has very little to do with Tlusty being an ex-leaf and everything to do with where that roster spot is (bottom 6). Bowman still isn’t good enough to crack the top 6 and not defensively solid enough to displace Tlusty with the work Jiri has already done in the bottom 6 at the NHL. Do I even need to discuss Boychuk?

wonder if boychuk is nervous, disinterested, resigned, bored, lazy...i just don't get it

When Boychuk was drafted there was little doubt he’s be in Canes sweater. Most people thought last year was his time. Then Skinner was drafted and the rest is history. Boychuk didn’t attend Camp Brindy and maybe was caught a little off guard that the spot we thought was his went to Skinner. All of that should have added up to Boychuk bringing the best he has this camp. A lot goes into being a successful NHL player. Something between the ears is holding him back because he seems to have the physical tools. With all the young players showing motivation and effort , it’s hard to babysit one who won’t.
Tlusty is on a one way contract. Do you think JR would send him to Charlotte at his salary or just trade him?
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting"..........holy cow.......what a ride!"
I think they’ll keep Murphy around as long as possible for a myriad of reasons, but the experience is probably the biggest one. They also want to understand his game and potential. Wesley is certainly taking notes since this is his new high priority project over the next few years. IMHO, there’s no way he’s making the NHL team, and whether they put him out for any regular season games seems uncertain to me at this point.
From Chip’s tweets I thought I saw that Dalpe is in the lead (the might have been Michael Smith’s tweets though – @msmithcanes ) after practice, but that Tlusty is playing like his life depends on it. I kinda thought Tlusty was a lock for an NHL spot this year, but it’s good to know that isn’t a given. I agree Tlusty is in good shape and is playing at a very high level compared to those he’s in the running with (Bowman, Boychuk, Terry, Samson)

It’s striking that Tlusty coming off shoulder surgery is better out of the gate than players who didn’t have to rehab over the summer. He came back fast from a severe knee injury last year, although he was subpar for quite a while. Tlusty doesn’t seem to lack drive.
He’s also got ample ability, is a bit bigger than the other leading forward prospects, seems sound defensively and shows flashes on offense, especially as a passer. I’m still hoping he’ll start to take more advantage of his size — to be a bit more like Ruutu. That’s probably asking too much given the recent shoulder surgery, but it would really help the Canes.
Other than Dalpe, the only other Canes’ forward prospect I’ve seen show comparable flair to Tlusty on offense is Boychuk. I’m still mystified about why Boychuk seems to have refused the challenge to compete for a job.

I'm thinking
JR/Mo are keeping Murhy around for two reasons—one he’s shown the offensive skill we’d like to have, but he’s shown not to be defensively skilled nor sized enough for the NHL. So I’d keep him up to make the point to Murphy: You need more size, so work on that, but we like your offensive game, keep it up—now refine and add to your defensive accumen.
It should be apparent to Murphy the more he plays against NHL forwards.
Who do you keep at forward/center?
untouchable vets:
staal, ruutu, sutter, jokinen, brent, skinner
young challengers:
boychuk, matsumoto, nash, bowman, dalpe, shugg, terry, samson
“iffy” vets:
tlusty, larose, dwyer, stewart, poni
if dalpe, samson, and bowman show a mix of grit, skills, and promise, I would find room for them. that leaves tlusty, larose, dwyer, stewart and poni up for grabs, taking into account boychuk, matsumoto, nash, shugg, terry going back down.

How exactly are LaRose, Stewart and Poni iffy when they just signed contracts?
When my opinions and reality don't coincide I re-evaluate my opinions, not reality.
In theory, players under contract could be traded if enough prospects look that much better. That doesn’t seem to be happening though, and it’s hard to imagine JR ditching longtime favorites to take any risk on a prospect who isn’t coming on like Skinner. That’s especially true when LaRose, Dwyer and Ponikarovsky have all played PK well in the NHL.
by curiouscanesfan on Sep 21, 2011 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions
I am blown away by the idea that you tink LaRose, Stewart, or Ponikarovsky are "iffy."
There is no way they don’t make the roster, and there is nothing they’d fetch in a trade that would make it worthwhile. Hell, the very idea that you say there are three from your challenger group who might make the team implies that one of them is a lock. 6 "untouchables"+3 challengers means that one of them absolutely HAS to make it, even if Tlusty and Dwyer are the other two kept.

Ugh.......
Every time i see our offensive options I get a knot in my stomach. As much as I hate to say it I would keep Poni, Stewart, LaRose, Dwyer Tlusty and Bowman in addition to the untouchables. Not because I want to mind you, but because they are the best options we have, as scary as that sounds.
Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.
when you step back away from the team as a passionate fan and look around the league for a bit, then back again at what JR did/didn’t do this summer, you cringe (at least I did). To think that he decided Stewart and Poni were the best available forwards out there doesn’t instill a lot of confidence. Of course, he seems to have his hands tied financially; that said, if you don’t have the $$$ to spend on high-quality free agents, why keep marginal NHL talent instead of dumping salaries and bringing up more AHL kids? I think if we fall flat out of the gate it will reflect poorly on this scenario for JR. Let’s hope we come out strong and he proves us all wrong.

I cringe when I think about JR letting 2 UFA forwards walk away for NOTHING 2 years in row, especially considering we are a budget team.
Harrumph
i think it was more about #13 and #26 moving for the money than about JR being unable to keep them. If I’m not mistaken, the ‘Canes made offers to both, didn’t they?

JR had to have known that Cole would have wanted a big contract. He deserved it. I hold no grudge. Heck, if I never missed a day of work, exceed productivity goals, and was a team leader, I’d expect a bonus and raise. If not, then the employer I worked for had better have excellent benefits (ie: chance to win the cup). It appears we are still rebuilding our youth movement. Cole is arguably in the final years of his career. He wants to win another cup. He won’t here. I knew we lost Cole when he started his media blitz shortly before the trade deadline.
Harrumph
Not sure what you mean by "rebuilding our youth movement."
We have not sold off any talented veterans of late (with the exception of Corvo, which most people seem to agree with.) Further, if you’re selling the “chance to win the Cup,” why the hell would you go to Montreal. They were most recently in a Cup Final, umm, when?

Not sure I agree
Cole was offered a raise. But I’m not sure I jump on the whole he deserved it bandwagon…. Too often teams pay for that ONE year spike—which is what Cole had last year compared to previous seasons—where he missed many days of work. And he’s older (last I checked that will continue as well) and has an injury history. Given his past three years performance and injury history did he deserve a four year guaranteed contract over 4 mil per year?? I don’t think so based on one year…

Whitney refused to be traded; we weren't sellers such that we could have traded Cole.

Because if you play young kids too early, you could ruin potential future assets.
If you play Stewart or Ponikarovsky and they don’t work out, so what? They move on.

Well I have seen nothing that indicates Dalpe won’t make the club thus far. He could challenge for a spot on the top line. This team likes their “old reliables” so may gut says that beyond Dalpe it would take almost a titanic effort by the likes of Nash, Matsumoto, Terry or anyone else to break the grip of comfort. I know Ruutu has been adapting well to returning to center after a long hiatus, but man I’d love to see Nash be able to bring the classic centerman skillset to the club, assuming he does everything in camp to earn it.
But Nash got killed on faceoffs against the Sabres.

I too am a wee bit
perplexed of and about Boychuck..if he keeps this up he’ll end up as a lifer in the AHL like Keith Accoin is..love the guy does hustle when he needs to but no gut wrenching let it all hang out like Tlusty is Hell even Bowman ( my guy from Spokane) looks like he’s having a better traing camp tham Boychuck is…Personally if i was JR or Mo I’d call him into the office and ask him “wassup” ? and show him the tapes..that way he can’t pout ot claim he’s being picked on …Love the guy respect him for what he has done and tries to do..but hell if this keeps up i feel it’s time to use him as trade bait …and trust me folks what i just said didn’t come easy well gots to run…thanks Miss Carolyn..great effort…

Mo
I am not quite sold on Mo’s plans for these guys either. Dalpe looks to me like a solid top six guy given our alternatives—yet Mo is still speaking like Dalpe will be third line with Sutter. Mo keeps saying Stewart with Ruu and Skinner, yet in the off-season JR was saying Dalpe would be perfect with Ruu and Skinner—another seeming disconnect to me between what Mo thinks and what JR thinks. How Mo views using prosepcts (defense first!!) and JR (who seems to like drafting skill guys and offensive D guys).
Right now given what I’ve seen out of Stewart Vs Dalpe, I sure hope Mo gives Dalpe a chance in the top six, we’re gonna need some scoring threat. Not convinced Poni has enough threat, nor Stewart at this point…
disconnect to me between what Mo thinks and what JR thinks
This is why I’m convinced JR had a hand in Skinner making the top 6 last year.
...and Staal making it in his second NHL year, and McBain becoming an NHL regular at 22, and Ward earning the starting job at 22, and, and and...
At some point, it’s not a conspiracy.

If Dalpe starts the season on the third line, there is no rule or philosophy which says he must remain there.
If he plays well as a scorer (which he has not consistently done at the NHL level), he will have every opportunity to move up the ranks. But what kind of message would you send to prospects—current and future—if you simply slotted them in the top six (or three!) based simply on AHL numbers and draft pedigree.

Not the point
If you think they have potential, you give them the chance. More than 1 shift. Like most other NHL teams do. Plus it’s still only preseason. The kid showed he can score, give him the chance with better linemates and see if the combination works…
We’re definitely not the best defensive team around, we’ll need to score to win. If you have a guy who demostrated throughout his career he can score, then see how he plays in the same positions he scored in in his career. You don’t sart him on your checking line and see if he can work offensive wonders with LaRose—No one else has…
Rask
Glad to be wrong! He’ll be much better off in Calgary where he won’t have ice time nuances to deal with.
