Hopefully optimistic.
Not a topic about our beloved Canes, although the same title would work for that post as well.
Nope it is my view on Brendan Shanahan's new job role, as NHL rules enforcer. Not so much caring or wanting to nit pick on the length of suspensions he has handed out, I am just impressed with the manner in how they are making a video clip for each one explaining very transparently what decisions are being made and why.
He handles it in a very Joe Friday "Just the facts ma'am" manner that I see as a very positive step forward for NHL.
It is early yet, and some rulings may end up being made that I disagree with, but the manner of the presentation, and laying bare the thinking behind the decisions is a win - win IMO.

It's a good move.
Even if there was some sort of logic and reasoning to the way this was being done before, it was impossible to tell. Everybody loves openness in governance.

Mostly happy
Still don’t like that Shanahan is referencing that an injury did not occur, but given the length of suspensions he’s handing out for non-injuries I’m hoping it doesn’t matter.
When my opinions and reality don't coincide I re-evaluate my opinions, not reality.
Do you not think that is relevant?
It IS one of the ways they assess in-game penalties.

If Shanahan maintains the current punishment and uses injuries to go beyond that I won’t have a problem with it. Too many times in the past suspensions weren’t handed out because there was no injury, and that’s something that needs to be out of the process. The hit was illegal, not the outcome.

It's hard to get worse than what it has been recently
and I do tend to think Shanny will do some good.
