UPDATED with Official release; TSN's Bob McKenzie reports 7 Canes on waivers prior to AHL assignment
UPDATED: The Canes have made it official. In addition to the 7 on waivers noted earlier, forwards Drayson Bowman, Zach Boychuk, Chris Terry, plus Justin Krueger and Michael Murphy are headed to Charlotte. Center Riley Nash and teen-aged defensemen Justin Faulk, and Ryan Murphy remain in Raleigh, for at least a little longer.
CANES TRIM TRAINING CAMP ROSTER TO 24
Twelve players assigned to Charlotte Checkers’ training camp
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has assigned 12 players from its training camp to its American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers. The Hurricanes’ training camp now stands at 24 players, and an updated training camp roster is attached to this release.
Forwards Drayson Bowman, Zach Boychuk, Chris Durno, Jon Matsumoto, Jerome Samson, Brett Sutter and Chris Terry, defensemen Justin Krueger, Mathieu Roy and Bobby Sanguinetti, and goaltenders Mike Murphy and Justin Peters, will join Charlotte's training camp on Friday.
The original report from Bob McKenzie is after the jump
Bob McKenzie has tweeted several names on the NHL waiver wire today including seven from the Hurricanes
More waivers: Durno, Matsumoto, Roy, Sanguinetti, Peters, Samson, Brett Sutter (all CAR); ....
That would be forwards Chris Durno, Jon Matsumoto, Jerome Samson and Brett Sutter; defensemen Mathieu Roy and Bobby Sanguinetti, and goaltender Justin Peters.
Prior to yesterday's game in Winnipeg, Coach Paul Maurice stated that there would likely be a total of 9 cuts made today. Others who don't require waivers would include goalie Mike Murphy and forwards like Riley Nash, Chris Terry, Zach Boychuk and Drayson Bowman.
We'll update as soon as official announcement is made by the Hurricanes. The remaining players are scheduled to practice at 1pm.
Other familiar names on the waiver wire are former Hurricanes Michael Leighton (PHI) and Bryan Rodney (ANA).

Sounds as though Riley Nash has made a serious impression, staying over the likes of Bowman, Boychuk, Brett Sutter, Terry, etc. His work in the faceoff dot is certainly helping him out there.
Looks as though the forward competition is down to Dalpe, Tlusty, Nash, and Dwyer while the D competition continues with Faulk/Murphy pushing for a spot over Harrison/McBain/Joslin.
Nash does sound like he is indeed getting a long look. I would hate to see him take Dwyer’s spot; in a perfect world, I’d have Nash, Dwyer, Dalpe and Tlusty staying with the big club to start the season.
Regardless, I’m sure we’ll see Nash up here sooner than later. I predict around the 14th game or so, if the team is tanking offensively…

I am happy for Nash, I think he’ll be a solid player soon. He is pretty much a center only so unless Mo and Company are thinking of some other options at the center position I think Nash will go down before Oct 7th, but he’s earned a stay as long as possible.
Ice_Chip tweet: Skinner does go back to the wing. Ruutu likely will not play final two games, so Nash stays for now.

Really surprised Sags, Peters, and Brett Sutter were placed on Waivers. I will definitely be disappointed if Sutter is claimed because I feel like he has had a really good camp and showed a lot of talent throughout his time with the organization.
In order to go to Charlotte, they are required to go through waivers as part of the CBA. It’s not like the Canes had a choice in the matter. (I’m not sure you knew that from the way your stated that as a surprise…? Sorry if I guessed wrong)

I knew that was a possibility, but I thought they were all young enough to still go without a claim. I know they’re all playing beyond their entry level deals, never knew when they were eligible to be claimed vs. free pass to the minors.
Thanks for clarifying
Also remember that any claiming team has to keep the player on their NHL roster. If they try to assign them to the AHL, the Canes can claim them back and directly assign them to the AHL. Since all teams are trimming rosters, it’s probably a very specific need (perhaps injury-created opening) and a specific player that would get claimed.
Sanguinetti was the victim of a numbers game. That space came down to either him or Faulk since Murphy is ineligible for the AHL. Faulk has more than proved his case to not be sent down, so Sanguinetti was squeezed out.
by Brian LeBlanc on Sep 29, 2011 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Teams will also be leery of Sanguinetti because of the hip surgery, his being less effective at the end of last season after returning, and his not playing this preseason. In fact, he may still be having hip trouble, or the Canes may have chosen not to play him because they want people to think he does so they can sneak him through waivers. The Canes know they don’t have a roster spot for Sanguinetti.

Wow
The whole waiving to go to minor league camp is odd to me….does that mean they get paid an NHL-level salary while in camp?
I’m with Stink on the Boychuck issue….I think he is ready to move on. What did he have last night? Zero SOG?
If it works like other pro leagues...
They would not be paid anything on their salary until the regular season begins. Just a daily/weekly per diem to cover food (and perhaps housing.)

All the coaches seem to really like his game. I thought it was a toss up between him and Bowman but Tlusty has a one way contract. Tlusty can play 4th line and kill penalties and they are still waiting to see whether he can score at this level. He has had bad luck with injuries so this is the first season he is going in healthy. So nothing really lost in keeping him and seeing if he has that breakout year everyone has always thought he was capable of. But if he doesn’t there are several players waiting to take his spot.
Nash
I think we sometimes forget that Nash was a 1st round draft pick and many analysts speculated that he was a can’t miss type player once his body grew into the style of game he wants to play.
He isn’t flashy but protects the puck well and is good in tight spaces. Will battle along the boards. Like a lot of medium sized college forwards it seems to take them a bit longer to get NHL ready. Edmonton had pressured him to leave Cornell early and sign a pro contract which he balked at and stayed to finish his degree. Canes of course got him via trade after Oilers tired of waiting for him.
It will be interesting whether the Canes keep him on the NHL roster and do something with Dwyer or send him down. As we have seen in prior seasons as we get closer to the start of the season and teams see what they have there are some trades. Still think the Canes will part of one since they have several players who are NHL ready but with no open roster spot. I can see them make room for both Faulk and Nash.
Does Nash have experience as a winger?
by hotchipsnsalsa on Sep 29, 2011 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Not sure. As far as I know he played center all through college and with Charlotte. But in today’s NHL it seems that forwards are expected to be flexible. Dalpe was a center. Ruu was a center them wing and now back to center. Dwyer played center. Jussi played center. LaRose was a center in Juniors…. the list goes on and it is the same on most teams.
It was like when Mo asked Dalpe at the start of the season where he saw himself playing and Dalpe answered “wing”….. Mo said “right answer”. I’m sure Nash will play wherever to stay. But he is a good face-off guy.
True, but almost all the good forwards play center when they’re young. Usually where someone plays is determined by the minors, and if there’s any question at all, they move them to wing in the NHL. Nash, IMO, is a C through and through.

Kind of like how most eventual MLB relievers started their careers as starters.

Daniels had Nash at Right Wing at Times
Daniels used Nash at wing at times. Most often Nash was a right wing during those times he was not playing center. Nash does have all the tools in terms of size, speed, hockey sense, and good hands. I was surprised that Nash out-played Boychuk to this point in the training camp; but he did in my view although some others here at Canes Country disagree. Bowman seems to have hurt his chances by not being able to score goals. Nash would have to beat out Dwyer to gain a spot in all likelihood.
Me too.

At least Bowman tried—he did hit two posts, but of course those don’t even count as SOG… Not sure Tlusty tried many shots, but he did feather some nice passes. Phase two fo Tlusty will have to be displaying the mindset Bowman did—a true desire and attempt to be a scorer. haven’t seen that element from Tlusty.
Who has suggested Boychuk has played ANYBODY?

Worth pointing out that Ruutu is a UFA after this year. Sutter will continue to improve, so he should be the No. 2 center down the road. So maybe Nash fits as the 3C, then you can either let Ruutu walk or move him back to wing.
by Cory Lavalette on Sep 29, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Another scenario could see Sutter move up to 2nd line center, Ruutu back to wing, and Nash centering a 3rd line this year. I think Nash’s strength is at the center spot with the way he thinks the game. Or as Sittler posts above, maybe a trade or desire to trade is in the works.
Trade Whom?
Logic would dictate a trade has to be considered; but whom? Dwyer seems to be the only player who the Canes might be willing to trade. LaRose is very highly valued by the Canes organization, so I doubt there is even a 1% chance he would be considered for a trade. Nobody else in the top 9 seems a likely trade candidate to me. Brent is invaluable to the Hurricanes already and has filled a critical need.
Loyalty
It’s one of Mr Rutherford’s few weak spots.
I disagree
It is commendable and the reason the Hurricanes staff includes valuable ex players as coaches or front office roles like Francis, Brindy, Wesley, Barasso, and Daniels. Not to slight Euro scout Bobby Kron.
I wouldn’t be completely shocked to see Ruutu traded. JR/PK never mention him as part of the core or necessary, he is a pending UFA who will get big bucks this offseason, he has high trade value, and he makes $4.4 million this year.
I believe he is invaluable for what he brings physically, but for a decent return I don’t think he is untouchable.
I of course also think Ruuty is invaluable, but I don’t think he’s untouchable either. That being said, JR has indeed mentioned him as part of his core on several occasions in the past. He just hasn’t mentioned it since Tuomo entered the final year of his contract. #justsayin #pimphand
by Jamie Kellner on Sep 29, 2011 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions
We, as least I, never thought Ladd would be traded. And who would have thought J. Will was tradeable either. Makes sense after the fact, but I would never have considered either of those 2 “likely” candidates. It all depends on what is offered in kind. I’d trade about anybody for another scorer. Of course, the self-imposed salary cap pretty much negates that. And who’s to say it’s likely a forward could be traded; maybe a d-man. We have depth there as well.
Harrumph
And, again...
They’re not gonna trade guys they just signed to significant extensions (i.e. LaRose/Brent.)

Staal is a MUCH better center then Sutter, plus that would be a waste to put them on the same line.
I'm trying to be positive here, so if you're not go PUCK yourself.
not sure i agree staal is MUCH better center than sutter, but i do agree them together on the same line would be wasting sutter’s talent on another line. i’m just sayin if they can’t find another talent to play w/staal move someone like sutter there, or maybe skinner

Realistically we don;t have much value in the players we would be trying to replace with Nash. Dwyer, LaRose or even Tlusty (although I wouldn’t trade him) have little trade value. Not saying they’re not valuable to OUR team, but on the open market they aren’t.
More specifically Dwyer and LaRose both were just resigned; trading them would be a low blow, but obviously whatever needs to be done will be done.
If anything, based on Nash’s showing, keep him up and scratch someone accordingly if he continues to show his ability to have NHL success. Then either send someone down.
Dead Horse, but
For an org that is unwilling to play and pay veterans to either sit in the press box or send them to minors, it seems dumber than dirt to have signed both LaRose and Dwyer. The end of season work of Bowman and the present camp showed we could be OK keeping him up in the bottom six. Same for Samson. But by signing both, JR assured the team and MO that both LaRose and Dwyer will have spots and play during the season…
…especially with Mo at the helm. I can see why people love LaRose, good character, good effort and hustle….but in the bigger scheme of things, his talent is easily replaced. But playing him in the top six? Having Mo even mention that as an option again for Staal this year?? Come on!!!
For the love of all things right and good, can this organization admit that Chad LaRose is a great fourth liner, a marginal 3rd liner, and entirely over-matched anywhere else? A third line of Tlusty/Sutter/Stewart would just be flat out beastly, provide unbelievable match-up problems, and smell like a group that could even pot an above average amount of goals?
please do not put rosie with sutter again
sutter set him up a kazillion times last season, in one sequence rosie fell down, got up, whiffed at the pass, fell down, crashed into goalie…

He is listed on the CH.com depth chart in the third line, and with the way Tlusty has been talked up, there is obviously room for the two to swap.

Roster Trade Bait
Those guys currently up with the big club who smell like trade bait:
Anthony Stewart
Jiri Tlusty
Jamie McBain
Derek Joslin
We know the guys down on the farm that qualify. But it appears to me that some guys are either being show-cased, pumped up, or set up. I think these 4 qualify (much as I’d absolutely hate to see McBain go). Stewart seems to be the type of guy who will either step up and perform, or be serviceable enough to get some assets in return (although his speed and size are interesting). Tlusty is just getting advance press beyond his actual performance. While I think, given the right situation, Jiri could be another solid performer, all the glowing mentions and the amount of playing time all feel like show-casing…McBain is also getting a lot of TOI during pre-season, but is only having an average few weeks. I believe his surgery set him back more than he wants to admit. Joslin is one of those guys who would make an interesting “2nd piece” 14 games or so into the season…I could see the Canes giving him a lot of ice time and then make him part of a package deal with a prospect and a pick (d-man coming back perhaps or legit 1st line wing…but only if Dalpe doesn’t work out as well as planned).
These observations have been playing around in the back of my head for a while and I just now figured it out enough to spew these thoughts.
i like the concept, but i don’t know as you could get much in return above and beyond what you would be giving up, i.e. serviceable pieces for serviceable pieces

Very surprised that Nash is the lone remaining AHL reinforcement.
I’m sure somebody would have given you long odds on him staying longer than several in the group that was just sent down. But really, it’s just another good sign of the Hurricanes in both their scouting and player development that he’s come so far since being basically dumped by the Oilers last summer. Or is it that he was NHL-ready all along and Maurice was just too stubborn to play him?
(Do I have the Maurice/Hurricanes-bashing memes right? It’s not usually my cup of tea.)

Nash and the Oilers
Riley Nash was a first round pick of the Oilers; and they were very unhappy that Nash showed little interest in being an Oiler. They traded Nash because they could not sign him. Nash is really not so much a surprise as some might think. Ron Francis was very excited to obtain Nash. Nash started off last season having to make a significant adjustment in his game to account for the added speed, physicality, and intensity of the NHL.
If one watched him play last season, he made tremendous improvements in his game. By the end of the season, he was a player the Checkers used often when they needed physicality and net presence. He has excellent hockey intelligence. He came to training camp much stronger, faster, and with a far clearer idea who he needed to play. My impression from what Maurice has said before is that he does not spend an extraordinary amount of time watching the kids at the AHL level. It has the advantage of having him not form prematurely opinions about the young prospects. I feel certain as well that the scouts, Ron Francis, and Jason Karmanos bring back detailed reports with regard to how the kids are playing.
It seems to me that Maurice is following an approach similar to Brian Burke’s and Ron Wilson’s were the top six are the skilled scorers, and the third and fourth lines are deemed to be Burke’s “plumbers.” Traditionalists should approve of that approach.
Again, I noted the improvement in both development and scouting.
That’s clearly happening.
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.
