Well, Hockey with Muller is Fun to Watch
Whatever happens the rest of the season, Muller hockey is fun to watch.
No doubt, this is a completely different feeling/outlook for this team for sure. I just hate one that it took so long for the change to be made when it was so obvious and secondly having to go through this season with seemingly no shot at anything. If we could just develop some consistency and put a series of wins together then I just keep hoping we could sneak in by some chance.

Staal did miss the puck, but a goalie should never give Malkin that much room, especially when he is at a terrible angle.
by hurricane9 on Jan 17, 2012 7:41 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Bouncing puck for staal, Cam should have poke checked the puck..
by CruelIn10tions on Jan 17, 2012 7:42 PM EST up reply actions
Why doesn’t someone hit malkin, the canes are letting him skate circles around them..Not a cheap shot, just nough for him to think when he’s got the puck, the same could have been said against the caps and Oveck..
Staal misplays the puck and Ward leaves a square foot of net open for Malkin. Bad way to end and otherwise good period. Well, the exception being McBain and Joslin are making me cringe when they’re in their own zone.

Isn’t it funny that when other teams make mistakes, we don’t capitalize. When we make a mistake, it always ends up in the back of our net.

Don’t get me wrong. I think Orpik is a douche. But a clean hit is a clean hit.
The only easy day was yesterday.
Yeah, I hate Orpik but Skins had the puck and kept his head down. I’m not even sure it was an interference penalty. Orpik is still a douche though.

I am studying Concussion Rehab, Diagnosis, and Return to Play for my college research course
3 Year Study. And this is why
If Skinner has a concussion, he must be shut down for the year. At his young age, his symptoms are not the same as many players in their upper 20s and 30s. His symptoms do not reflect his actual brain recovery. EX a month after injury a 30 year old may have diminished headaches and Skinner may have diminished headaches compared to the original headache. This does not mean they are both at the same stage of the recovery. Skinner is MUCH farther behind and could be 3 months behind the actual brain recover than a 25 year old. I would not play him for this game. He is now more susceptible to a concussion. the quiet room test for a person Skinner’s age is not the proper test. Return to play protocol is such a grey spot in sports medicine.
we understand all of that..but what medical science hasn't figured out is heart and spirt

Why in the name of all that is Holy.....
Does Muller use the man that has zero moves in the shoot-out?
Can we just give them the extra point if its still tired after overtime? It will at least save us the embarrassment of the shootout. We have bad shooters and the worst shootout goalie in history. Maybe put Peters in, to at least let him see some shots.

Orpik's skates were 2 or 3 inches off the ice when he hit Skinner
Watch the replay. He should have been given a game misconduct.
but.
his skates left the ice. that’s not clean. that’s dirty. b/c orpik is a dirty player.

His skates were. On the ice when he made the hit. It doesn’t matter if they come up as a result of the contact. Skinner has a low center of gravity and a small body, so after contact his momentum lifted orpik a tiny bit off the ice
Clean hit.
by ECUCanesFan on Jan 18, 2012 1:08 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I have hated Orpik ever since the Cole incident. But as much as I dislike him, this was a clean hit.
My thoughts.
If we are going to push games to OT or a shootout, Cam Ward needs some more practice during practice against out best shootout people. B/C no offense to Cam, but he’s never been great at all in a shootout. So we either need to win it in OT – or Cam needs more practice. :(
Ready for the Canes to win the Cup again! :)
Ward and Staal and Generational Players
I think the Hurricanes organization is lucky to have both Ward and Staal. On the other hand, last night was indicative of the difference between a generational player like Malkin and excellent NHL players. There is no shame at all in being NHL All-star material but not being one of the small number of best players in NHL’s history. Malkin has Hall of Fame potential. At this point in their careers, unless Ward and Staal win some more Stanley Cups, they will likely have their jerseys retired; but will not be among the Hall of Fame members.
I read last night comments made by Nathan Horton and they seemed to ring true for both Ward and Staal. Horton said, “everybody expects me to be Gretzky; but I am not him. I am doing the best I can every game.” So it is with Ward and Staal. They are giving all they have; but when faced up against Malkin the odds favor Malkin.
Skinner has the most potential on the team as it presently is constituted to be a generational player. He is doing things at 19 that most NHL players can only do in their dreams. If the Hurricanes can draft a generational player to go with the core players and the young players on the roster and in Charlotte, Staal and Ward will both become far better players. Staal will have a player who can be the focus, along with Skinner, of the defense. Ward won’t have to worry that the least let down will result in a loss because the team can’t score enough goals to give him a cushion.
I find it unfair to criticize any player other than generational players for not playing like one of the five or ten best players in the NHL. Staal at the moment is the best forward on the team. He has been great for the organization. He has his limitations as a player; but on balance despite his tendency to mope on occasion, he has given all he has. Ward always gives all he has and with only a couple of moments this season when frustration overcame his self-control, he has be a model of how one would want an NHL goalie to act. Ward, too, has his limitations. He knows teams have the book on him and go high side, usually glove side. He is not the best goalie in the NHL in the skills competition of shoot-outs. When he is on his game, and particularly during the playoffs, he can be the difference maker between the team moving on and the team heading back to Raleigh to pack their gear up for the off-season.
To me shoot outs are like a skill show at the all star game. It is a team game and I have never thought that an individual skills competition should decide the outcome.
There are many other very good players who are terrible at shootouts. Stamkos comes to mind. Geez run him out of town.
I can’t recall the exact stat but Gretzky used to joke that they should decline penalty shots if he is the shooter.
The mistake is to use Staal in that situation. But you can’t blame Muller for trying to get to know his players and quite a few of them are playing and doing things differently under his leadership. Maybe he just wanted to give his captain a shot. So now hopefully he is done with that experiment.
Bigger mystery to me is why Cam has become so bad at shootouts.
But to your point, Cam made several exceptional saves that are only more impressive when you look at the replays. This is the second year in a row he has faced a ton of rubber. Despite his numbers he is in my opinion still one of the elite goalies in the league. Imagine him with an elite D corps in front of him.
Cam Ward on the Shootout
My take is that Cam Ward is best in the moment where he doesn’t think, but reacts. He’s a great athlete, but even more he is a competitor. If one looks only at the goals Ward allows over the course of a regular season and not the miraculous saves he makes almost on a routine basis, you’d think he was an average to an above-average goalie. Then if one looks only at his saves, you’d think he was a goalie who belongs in the NHL Hall of Fame, especially if one factors in the number of shots Ward faces each season.
At some point, we are likely to see either Murphy or Andersen as the back up goalie. I’d love to see Murphy called up and given a chance at the shootout. Why not have a goalie who is a shootout specialist? Shootouts are a nonsensical way to determine the outcome of games; but it’s the rules.
More Practice, Indeed.
Our “best” shootout people isn’t saying much, under the circumstances. Either Stall learns to be a sneaky SOB like Jokinen, or Muller stops using him in the shootout.
