Poni trade

Nothing up on the Ponikarovsky trade?

Per TSN:

The Carolina Hurricanes have traded forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to the New Jersey Devils for defenceman Joe Sova and a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.

Now I'm going to post this a few more times, to reach the 75 word minimum....

Interesting that JR got both a pick and prospect. Seems to indicate some notion of value for good 3rd line forwards. ie if Poni is worth a 4th and a prospect “project” then what would Ruutu yeild? Seemingly this pushes it toward that “1st and prospect” others and I have been hoping, but it looks tightly bunched right now for the spread.

When able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

Ruutu will net a 1st + a decent prospect or a 2nd + an elite prospect.

Jordan Caron + a 2nd from Boston would make me happy.

I wouldn't really call Sova

a prospect. Hockey’s Future didn’t even have him as a top 16 Dman in the Devils system. As a 23 year old who supposedly has good puck moving abilities, his numbers (2g/2a/-1/14 gp AHL; 2g/5a/+10/18gp ECHL) don’t really jump off the page at you. He does have a little size at 6’3" but I think he was more of a sweetner and some organizational depth (for when we start moving other D-men).

As for Poni, I felt like the more he played, the more his value went down. He had his value based in a strong cycle game and his willingness to stand in front of the net. But the more I watched his speed and scoring acumen, the more I thought we’d be happy with just about this trade – 4th rd pick + C- prospect. I guess this means Larose is back, but at least there’s still an opening for some young guys to cycle through.

That is the reason I called him a prospect “project” above……..I have no idea what Sova might project down the road. Nothing on the offensive side as best I can see so he might be one of those shut down D projects and needs a couple of more years of minor league work before anyone gets too excited. Also with D there seems to be late bloomers and Harrison is an example of that……

When able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

Good review of the trade

This is a trade that is a lead up to another trade. When Gleason/Spacek/Allen are traded there is a bit more defensive depth in Charlotte to absorb a call up.

Big shot from the point……like that……..90+mph and that is really nice.

He's basically a flier.

Best-case scenario, he’s probably a part-time NHLer, but he has a better shot to be contributing to our organization than Ponikarovsky does in two years.

Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

Good Deal

IMO this trade was made to primarily free up a spot on the Canes roster for the return of LaRose and so we don’t have to keep sending our young prospects back down to Charlotte. The inclusion of Sova, a defenseman, is probably because Charlotte is short on defensemen and, who knows, the guy might develop. We also free up cap space, i.e.; save money on the deal. The 4th round pick is just topping on the cake. The part I like is we will get to see more of our young prospects now. The bad part is Poni was an excellent team player of a type we have plenty of. I hope he does well in NJ and am glad to see him get a chance to play in the playoffs. If he does real well in NJ, who knows, JR might try to recycle him. Wouldn’t be the first time, would it?

If CHA is short on defensemen why did we grab Brett Carson off of reassignment waivers the other day?

by jfhammon on Jan 21, 2012 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

he would have to play for the hurricanes and not play in charlotte if we claimed him off waivers

From my perspective it was a no-brainer to claim Carsons. His contract is $575,000 this season and next season. If indeed Jim Rutherford plans to trade Spacek and Gleason if not Spacek, Gleason, and Allen, Carsons is a solid defenseman who is well known to the Hurricanes.
