Scenario if Everybody Almost is Replaceable

If one makes the logical leap that other than Ward, Staal, Skinner, and Sutter, everybody is replaceable and will be traded if the offer is sufficiently high (and to be clear I do to ascribe to that belief), the ramifications could be dramatic and long term. I happen to strongly disagree that Ruutu is replaceable or that it is logical to trade all four of Spacek, Harrison, Gleason, and Allen. Even so, given the article by Kurt Dusterberg and others it bears a brief examination here with a focus on the impact on the 2012 draft.

Gleason: based on the market, Rutherford likely will receive a first round pick for Gleason at minimum.

Ruutu: again based on the market, Rutherford is likely to receive a first round pick for Ruutu at minimum.

Allen: given his steady and physical performance as a Hurricane, he would command a second round pick and/or a solid prospect.

Spacek: his experience and calm approach makes him worth at least a third round pick, if not a second round pick;

Harrison: given Harrison’s low salary and his value to the Hurricanes, it would take at minimum a second round pick and a prospect. I would not be at all shocked to learn that Jim Rutherford declined to give up Harrison except for a first round pick because it will cost far more than Harrison’s salary to replace him.

LaRose: I think LaRose would come a third round pick and a prospect.

Jokinen: I doubt Jim Rutherford would trade Jokinen except for either a third round pick and a very solid prospect or a second round pick.

Tlusty: If Jim Rutherford is cleaning the shelves, Tlusty may well command a third round pick. Tlusty is a player who can play all four lines and has a very inexpensive contract.

Dwyer: Again, if Rutherford does into house-cleaning mode, Dwyer might command a third round pick.

McBain: McBain may well command a second round pick, if not a prospect for prospect trade.

One can argue that with UFAs, one can always enter the bidding wars and re-sign a player. Joe Corvo’s re-signing an example. My take is that Jim Rutherford needs to decide which players are truly critical to having a team that plays Muller hockey very successfully and needs to find out which of those players will sign extensions. Any UFA player with whom the negotiations with the player’s agent and Rutherford don’t yield a signed contract, it’s time to trade them. Not getting anything for Whitney or Cole was unfortunate. All it took was for Jim Rutherford to have asked Whitney’s and Cole’s agents what they wanted for an extension. Cole’s agent would have said, there is no offer we will give you to sign. At that point, it was time to move Cole. Whitney’s agent would have asked for a three year commitment, and Jim Rutherford would have made the best deal he would in light of Whitney’s no-trade clause. Why go down that same path again.

As much as I disagree with the house-cleaning approach, it does have the advantage of giving the Hurricanes a prominent position for draft choices in the first two years. I would likely mean another two years perhaps outside the players, but there is no question with a successful 2012 draft, the Hurricanes long term would increase significantly the talent pool in the system. I suppose as well that this post is a cautionary tale. One has to be care what one asks for because you just might get it.

I think you are probably dead on with what our UFA’s will bring and the Canes would do well to collect a few 1st Round picks, preferably not from powerhouse teams. I’d target Nashville, Ottawa, Calgary, Phoenix, Minnesota, etc.

These picks could be excelent bargaining power to move up in the draft, trade for a player like Bobby Ryan at the draft, or just stock the cupboards with some very solid mid-1st round D picks like Olli Maata, Jacob Trouba, Slater Koekkoek, Cody Ceci, Griffin Reinhart, etc.

I seriously doubt Tlusty is moved, he really seems to be coming into his own offensively and is cheap.

Jussi and McBain I only see being moved in a bigger deal where an NHL player is coming back this way. Not worth giving them up for the 2nd or even 1st Round pick the Canes would receive back.

Didn’t Rutherford comment in the post-Cole discussion that he asked for but never recieved a salary number from Cole’s agent?

by surgalt on Jan 23, 2012 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

My take: Ruutu – sign him now (extend), otherwise trade him. Get at least a 1st round draft pick, but preferably a 1st and 2nd rounder. Gleason – sign him now or get at least 1st round pick for him. Allen – resign him as soon as you can. Even if you have to wait until free agency (after 71/) resign him. He adds things to this team (size, spunk, shot blocking, etc.) that the team needs. Tylusty – resign him. He appears to be developing into a very dependable two-way forward. Jokinen – hold onto him. He’s had a bad year to date, but he has proven he can be top-six forward and he improves the players that play with him. The rest – If you are going to ship others out, I sure hope we get NHL qualified players in return and certainly nothing below a 2nd round draft pick. if draft picks are involved. What good are a bunch of 3rd and 4th round draft picks from contending hockey teams. If they were worth much, the contenders wouldn’t be so quick to give them up. Let’s face it, this team has let some very good hockey players move on who are still playing in the league (Whitney, Cole, Cullen, Vrbata, Ian White, Corvo, Seidenberg, Commodore (take the “very” from in from of the “good”), etc. Maybe its time to hold onto some of our people and let them develop for us. Glad to see your comment “As much as I disagree with the house-cleaning approach…” If we are going to house clean, then we as fans better be ready to go through a scenari9o much like the Islanders, Blue Jackets, etc. have gone through. I really don’t think we have to blow-up this team. If this team just had a Neal for example and the team had been coached properly (things like being in shape enough to play a 60-minute hockey game, have a respectable power play and/or penalty kill, players playing in proper roles, etc. All things our previous coach did not do) and our top forwards all didn’t have down years all at the same time, this season would have been alot different.

In other words, add a Neal type top 6 forward in addition to retaining Ruutu and with Staal and Jokinen back in shape and scoring, and a healthy Skinner and we have a playoff level team. Another top 9 forward who could score 15-18 goals would really put the icing on the cake IMO.

Minor correction: Mike Commodore is playing as the 7th or 8th defensemen for the Red Wings. He has 12 games on the season.

"Jim Rutherford needs to decide which players are truly critical to having a team that plays Muller hockey very successfully "

this is an excellent point. I always thought with Mo there was some sort of a disconnect with JR drafting a certain type of player and Mo coaching a different type of hockey. I would like to see the GM and coach on the same page with any trades.

Would like to see Gleason go for a first rounder, his best days are behind him.

As much as I like Jokinen, I could see him bringing a first-rounder and something else. Would rather lose him than Ruutu.

While the market is pretty bare for high end forwards, it is equally bare for solid defensemen. Below Suter or Weber exists of a group of players that includes Gleason. If Nashville holds on to their players Gleason is among the top defensemen available. That should get us a 1st rounder or a quality prospect.

Jokinen has had two seasons since his glory days and is among the group of ‘utility’ forwards. I doubt he cracks the top 6 on any contenders although he may contribute on their powerplays. As a result a 1st for Jokinen is a stretch. While Ruutu has similar numbers to Jokinen he brings some grit and in your face play which should cause him to have a higher value. Sadly Jokinen will be grouped with players like Niklas Hagman and Jason Blake as former contributors that still have some upside.

Fool's Gold

In “house-cleaning” or any other scenario I would not trade a player under contract for a draft pick. It’s the old “bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. If you like what you have, taking a draft pick is like gambling on the lottery (a tax for those who are bad at math). Draft picks tend to be “fool’s gold”.

So I would not trade Jokinen. Like many of you I’d like to see Ruutu (and even Gleason) re-signed. But it may already be too late for that.

Under contract for next year, in case that isn’t clear.

by LewPuls1 on Jan 23, 2012 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

Rutherford would be crazy to trade Harrison or Tlusty. Harrison just may be the one of the best defensemen in the league relative to what he is being paid but no team in there right mind would give JR a 1st round pick for him. Tlusty is finally coming into his own too and showing why he was a former first-round pick. His salary is very affordable and though he’ll get a raise, it shouldn’t be anything Rutherford or PK couldn’t take on I’d imagine.

Just my two cents…

Harrison and Tlusty

I think it is unlikely that another team’s general manager would make the kind of offers it would take to pry Harrison or Tlusty away from the Hurricanes; but my point was only that if those offers were received, Rutherford would trade either Harrison or Tlusty. Harrison has been outstanding and continues to improve. Tlusty under Muller is also showing the promise that made him a first round pick. Of course, if we see that improvement, it is conceivable other NHL General Managers also see it.

by abramsdoug on Jan 23, 2012 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

True, if someone were to offer us a 1st for Harrison then it would be a no-brainer, of course. I’d prefer to hold on to Tlusty and resign him in the offseason. I’m still not sure I’d take a 3rd rounder for him as he’s been really improving like you said. I wonder how much of that has to do with the fact he’s finally been healthy for a long stretch of time. He seems to be of the late-bloomer variety. I don’t see a reason why he can’t be a consistent 20+ goal scorer in this league, hopefully it is with the Canes.

by anonymousJ on Jan 23, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

If I were Jim Rutherford, I would re-sign Tlusty. I would not take a third round pick for him. Tlusty is benefiting from being healthy, and from the new uptempo approach. Also, Muller forgives mistakes and doesn’t punish a player for mistakes. Players lose shifts if they are not giving high effort each shift; but not for making mistakes that come from giving full effort. For young players, it takes a huge weight off their shoulders because young players tend to overthink as it is. Thinking too much is almost a guaranteed way to be behind a play.

by abramsdoug on Jan 23, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

I think the bang for the buck with Harry and Tlusty makes them attractive to JR, and rightly so. Another GM would not offer what it would take to get JR to let them go. Tlusty is really a 3rd line guy, so as long as he is signed with that in mind.

by Hockeydog on Jan 23, 2012 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Harrison is our most reliable D-Man (and has scored the most goals, as I recall). I would not trade him for fool’s gold a first from a contender.

by LewPuls1 on Jan 23, 2012 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

For a team near the top trading away a 1st rounder isn’t as dramatic as some might argue. In many draft years there is little that differentiates a low 1st rounder with a 2nd rounder and it is a crap shoot at that point as to whether the player will ever be an impact NHLer.

I was surprised by the Edmonton Journal trade analysis that indicated that the Canes were asking two 1st rounders for each of Ruutu and Gleason. That seems a bit rich especially if the player is considered a rental. For some of the teams linked to those two and their CAP situation going into next year these players are actually more attractive because there are no future contract obligations. And the value of winning a cup in cities like Philly, Boston, TO and Detroit is huge so they are willing to make a major deal, especially if they see a major rival make one. In some years we have seen the first couple of deal strengthen a top contender and then it is a domino affect to see others try to match those moves. The value of players ten starts to go up as the bidding intensifies. In other years it has been a yawn fest.

The 6-5 loss to Boston last night has to have Philly convinced they need that extra D piece to go the distance. The question for them will likely be if they want to give up a roster player like JVR for Schenn; a 1st rounder and prospect to get Gleason; or an even richer package for Suter. No idea which way they will go. My guess is that their overall CAP situation going into next year may drive this potential trade as much as anything.

Detroit is rumoured to be interested in Selanne ( no trade contract), Hemsky and Ruutu. Selanne probably makes the most sense since it would be a last shot at the cup. I don’t think Hemsky is the answer for the wings. Too inconsistent and fragile. Ruutu is their kind of player and if they go that direction it may with a thought to see if they could sign him longer term. If there is a player that I think might go in trade and then re-sign with the Canes in the offseason if financials are reasonable it is Ruu. But heck, I never thought Ray would leave and look at how that worked out.

Interesting how it will all play out. It may well be that none of the above that actually happens.

by sittler27 on Jan 23, 2012 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

I suspect with so many teams so close to the Cap and the pending CBA discussions in which many feel the Cap will go down, it is more likely we see desperate teams overpaying for Rentals and Gleason/Ruutu are 2 of the best available. I seriously doubt 2 Firsts are coming back, but a 1st + a prospect isn’t out of question.

Id like to see Ruutu + Gleason to Ottawa for 1st + Jared Cowen + Stefan Noesen

Would be a significant move on their part, but GM Bryan Murray said he would be a buyer and it would cause a huge splash with the ASG there. Not to mention we have a history of multi-player swaps with them.

by JussiJuice on Jan 23, 2012 10:57 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Plus Ottawa has been linked in rumors to both Ruutu and Gleason. Some feel Gleason would make a perfect compliment to Karlsson while Ruutu is exactly the physical force they need in their top-6.

by JussiJuice on Jan 23, 2012 11:00 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Unless Gleason agrees to sign a contract before being traded I don’t think Ottawa will give up Cowen. He’s been awesome in Ottawa this year. He’s a big guy who plays big minutes.

by jfhammon on Jan 23, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Does Detroit have any history with one-and-done rentals? I can’t seem to recall them bringing any big-namers on board just for a run at the cup, then letting them go, i.e. if Ruutu went there I could see them doing so only if he’d stick around.

Great point. Most of the deals they have made were either for players under contract or guys they ended up signing. Some one and done deals I vaguely recall ( and they may have been traded or waived the next season) were Ulf Samuelsson near the end if his career; Jiri Slegr; Cory Cross; Kyle Calder. Not exactly blockbuster moves. Their bigger deals were almost always guys they retained.

by sittler27 on Jan 23, 2012 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

Agree but...

My concern is for JR. He strikes me as a hard nut to crack, and someone who sticks to his guns and terms, sometimes to the detriment of the team. I’m wondering where he values our assets—so much so that I’m concerned he forgoes deals because he wants too much and we wind up with nadda, then possibly lose the guys anyways over the summer. Then we find no good top six FA or trade acquisition becuae of a tight budget, and we have to wait for the team to develop prospects to fill roles, and we remain out of the playoff hunt even longer….

by Squeaky83 on Jan 23, 2012 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

Remember, this is an organiZation whose owner said at the start of the season he believed we had a playoff-caliber team. If JR and PK are on the same page most of the time, I’m guessing yeah, they both over-value our prospects to the point of not getting a good return in trade. Hoping that changes…

All Interesting and thought out ponts from AD & Sittler

and to top them off..they both make alot of sense too!! but we all know that there are times when the business side of Hockey makes NO Sense at all. With that said..I have a feeling and based on JR’s past preformaces in trades & etc…both AD & Sittler are very much on target ..this fan sees Gleason,Ruutu along with Allen,McBain ( possibly) along with a Boychuk,Sutter(42) tossed in to sweeten a or the deal…but like everyone else..we the fans will have to sit back and wait & see who and what will happen…until then…have fun speculating !! Hey it quit raining here woo hoo..now if it wil;l just warm up a wee bit!!
