Beautiful goal by Skinner off a broken play. Tried to feed Jokinen across the crease, pass was blocked by Ron Hainsey and right back to Skinner. Backhander puts the Canes up 1-0 at 3:55.

Looks like the Chris Mason mystique has worn off to the tune of two goals on four shots. This time, Tim Brent take a shot from no angle that bounces off Mason’s stick and between his legs at 9:28 to give the Canes a 2-0 lead.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 7:24 PM EST reply actions

Yeah. That was pretty much Mason scoring on Mason! But we’ll take it!

Scoring Play

Canes lead 2-0 – Brent 6 (Stewart) 9:28 1st

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 7:26 PM EST reply actions

Skinner! Brent!

Missed the game thread—was in the pre-game…..

by Squeaky83 on Jan 23, 2012 7:26 PM EST reply actions

Good example of what Mo always wanted but couldn’t get—we’re generating offense off good defense.

by Squeaky83 on Jan 23, 2012 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

Well, Mo said that he wanted it, but his offensive system was so stifling that even if they wanted to generate offense they were kinda cornered by the system. At least here, there’s some attempt at making plays, which you could see nicely by Stewart stepping in and being the second man on the boards to pry the puck loose and give Brent a chance to make that play.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

That was only the second shift for Brent

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting"..........holy cow.......what a ride!"

Each team only has five shots, but it seems like the Canes have at least twice as many scoring chances. The fourth line especially has been impressive. (And, yes, LaRose is on that line.)

Talk about a fast first period. I think I can count the number of whistles on one hand. Canes get a loud ovation as they leave the ice with a 2-0 lead and a 7-6 advantage in shots.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 7:40 PM EST reply actions

Nicely played period—Muller talked about winning by defense and limiting the other team. We had quite a few good blocks of shots—not sure what was actually counted, and we were in the passing lanes a lot as well. Despite probably a low hit count, we played an adequate physical period—some good checks of their forwards took away ice and posession.

i liked it. And we were pretty dynamic in the offensive zone

by Squeaky83 on Jan 23, 2012 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Great first period for the Canes. Keep it up boys…

by CruelIn10tions on Jan 23, 2012 7:41 PM EST reply actions

I think Dalpe had a good 1st. He definitely has improvements to make, but a like his energy and speed with Skinner & Jussi.

JR; please dump some players and bring the kids up to stay!

by PackPride17 on Jan 23, 2012 7:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He looked a little more comfortable, and a little faster—still needs to work on chemistry with is linemates—looks like he’s not sure where they are going to be or where he needs to play off of them…

by Squeaky83 on Jan 23, 2012 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

I think a lot of that is just adjusting from the AHL where it’s so much slower-paced than in the big leagues. Down there, your line mates are a step or two slower and it makes an enormous difference in your positioning. That’s something that I’ve heard from just about every player who has ever been called up…it’s not as obvious on TV or in the seats as it is on the ice. Even fourth lines in the NHL are faster than almost anything you’d see in the AHL.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

His acceleration is amazing, I agree.

Nice save by Ward through traffic. I know it sounds like we’re beating a dead horse here, but the All-Star break could be a very bad thing for him, given how well he’s been playing and the fact that the Canes won’t have another game for over a week after tonight.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 7:59 PM EST reply actions

a good point you make

but riding cam is an unfortunate habit muller shares with he who shall not be named

by brass bonanza on Jan 23, 2012 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Well, in his defense, Boucher was hurt about a week after he took the job. I think we’d have seen him a few times if he was healthy. That said, the way Ward’s been playing it probably wouldn’t be real wise to give him a night off, especially with the break coming up.

by hurricane9 on Jan 23, 2012 8:01 PM EST via mobile reply actions

If LaRose is hurt, it’s either nothing or a big deal, because Pete Friesen is still on the bench. Tlusty just left the ice too but it looked like he broke a skate blade blocking a shot. Wally Tatomir followed him down the tunnel.

Tlusty-Staal-Ruutu line has stayed together with LaRose on the shelf. Looks like the Canes are going to try to stay as normal as possible, which probably means someone (Staal?) double-shifting on the fourth line.

Nasty one-timer by Kyle Wellwood makes it 2-1 at 13:47. Great feed by Toby Enstrom through two defenders to Wellwood, who one-timed it in from his knee.

16,045 of your closest friends in the house tonight. Not bad for a Monday game given the opponent.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 8:23 PM EST reply actions

LaRose still hasn’t returned, and if he needs stitches on his leg he probably won’t. Kinda hard to keep stitches in place when you’re moving your legs constantly. For the record, it is indeed Staal double-shifting in LaRose’s spot on the fourth line.

by Squeaky83 on Jan 23, 2012 8:27 PM EST reply actions

Well, that power play was a bit of a disappointment. Kind of like this entire period. Passes to no one, not getting numbers on the boards, the whole nine yards.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 8:28 PM EST reply actions

That horn is a welcome sound for the Canes. They badly need the intermission to regroup…they looked slower and slower as the period went on. They’re lucky to still be up one. Shots in the period were 10-7 Jets.

by Brian LeBlanc on Jan 23, 2012 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Good to see the Canes get 2 pts when down a forward (and 2 for a while).
