Denver has some good hockey memories for me. I saw my first NHL game there and the last time I was there I was flying the Devils when they lost in game 7 of SCF.

Fond memories

I lived in Denver for 5 years and graduated from CU. It’s been years, but I still miss it. Great town and where I first really got into hockey.

According to the Yahoo preview, Staal has never triggered a score against the Avalanche. Hopefully that assist will start things off…

Also said that the Canes/Whalers have never won in Denver (one tie each for the Whale and Canes). We’re a third of the way there – just remember they are playing in the mile high city, so I hope they don’t run out of gas in the 3rd.

by jbwhite99 on Feb 10, 2012 10:05 PM EST reply actions

We’ve never won at the Pepsi Center. 2/9/1996 the Whalers won 3-2 in Denver at the old arena. 16 years ago yesterday.

On another note

One thing I remember really liking as a newer hockey fan in Denver was Adrian Dater’s Avs Mailbag. He would take questions about the team, NHL, and hockey in general every week. I’ve always thought that would be a great thing for the News and Observer to do. Especially since there are so many new and potential hockey fans in the area. I know it really helped me.

Anyway, Jokinen and Skinner aren’t doing anything either. You can’t bring down someone’s game when their game isn’t up in the first place.

Officials in NHL games are hired and monitored by the league itself.

Tough way to lose that one. Thought Staal had a real strong game and Tlusty continues to make me want JR to resign him considering he’s coming into his own and is still young.

Also, can we please move Skinner back to wing? I don’t what it is but I don’t think he’s played to the level we’re used to since moving to the middle. Seems slower and trying to take on too many defenders at once. Not bashing the kid but I don’t think his future is at center. I like him a lot better at wing where he doesn’t have to worry about getting back so quick and or so deep at times – just seems to come up the ice with so much more speed when playing winger. Just my two cents…

First line scores 6 times in the last 4 games, time to break it up because overrated boy wonder Jeff Skinner needs his security blanket

Lazy uninspired play should not be blamed on “playing center”. He has no interest in distributing the puck or battling for it. Just float around, wait for someone to pass it to him and turn it over try to skate through the D.

Third

Skinner did nothing offensively in that game and he floated around defensively, resulting in two goals.

This situation shows why Staal is (currently) a better player than Skinner. Muller needs to sit Skinner down and smack some of the diva out of him and tell him to play hard like the rest of the team. Same with Jokinen.

by hurricane9 on Feb 11, 2012 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's a matter of effort.

Skinner just isn’t ready physically/mentally to be a center with all that entails. And that’s no knock at 19 years old.

Skinner

I see the same things. He looks disinterested when he doesn’t have the puck on his stick. And when he gets knocked off the puck he looks around immediately to see where the ref is. It reminds me of the Crosby bashing a few years back with his pouting. The only difference is he wasn’t costing his team points by loafing back into the zone and waiting for the outlet passes to spring him on a breakaway or 1-on-1.
When I see him the last few games, I’m unfortunately starting to see a lot of Alex Semin in him. He just doesn’t seem to care unless the puck is on his stick. He makes passes, but rarely are they on target and most times they aren’t to anyone actually. I wish Muller would hold him more accountable and bench him for a few shifts to remind him he’s still a little boy in a man’s game and that lollygagging in the NHL won’t work like it did in the OHL.
He needs to remember one nice rookie season doesn’t make you a Hall of Famer immediately. Just ask Sergei Samsonov, Andrew Raycroft or Steve Mason.

Well Played Game; A Couple of Mistakes

It was a well played game with a couple of mistakes. The Hurricanes continue to develop their identity as a team. Tlusty is flourishing under Muller and MacLean. Skinner is learning how to be a consistent two-way center; and I think he is a natural center. Ward was amazing on many of the shots; and let one soft goal; and perhaps didn’t play the last shot that well even though Faulk’s mistake was the root cause of the goal.

As long as Ruutu is re-signed, and as long as the Hurricanes pick somewhere between 1st and 3rd in the 2012 draft (it would take winning the lottery pick to pick ahead of Columbus), this season will be well worth the disappointments. One more franchise forward with Ruutu back and the Hurricanes will be set for years. Muller and MacLean seem to me to be the real deal as coaches.

by abramsdoug on Feb 11, 2012 12:47 AM EST reply actions

Colorado’s winning goal shoukd have come earlier by all rights. Whether the Harrison botched pass behind the net (how does he fall for that?) or the anemic PP that gave the Av’s several shots. Yeah, Faulk had a brain freeze by not dumpming the puck, but the Canes still stole a point. And let’s not talk about giving up goals right before the end of the first and second. One last thing – shoot more, pass less! (you, too, #12).

by 80 onI40 on Feb 11, 2012 7:52 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Seems like everyone wants to poke at mistakes made by players but Skinner gets a pass. Let his man go on Colorado’s 2nd goal and on their 3rd went behind the net when we already D there…. not only took out his own D who didn’t expect that but left shooter alone in the slot. He is an exceptional offensive talent and I still think the kid will have an awesome career….. but have not liked his game much lately. And in contrast to Doug I don’t think he is currently up to all the extra responsibilities of playing center.

by sittler27 on Feb 11, 2012 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t suggest Skinner is not making mistakes. To the contrary, he is having to learn how to manage the energy level necessary to play solid defense at center while still being an offensive threat; and to do so in shifts of 45 to 50 seconds. What I am advocating is that this season is a great season and time for Skinner to be having these trials by fire at center. Skinner I believe is a natural center. Until he gains an extra step of explosive speed, he is at somewhat of a disadvantage. These remaining games should have as their focus putting round pegs in round holes and letting young players learn from their mistakes. It’s also a test of the team’s character that they maintain 100% effort even though the chances of reaching the playoffs are dismal.

When Jokinen was moved to center, his goal scoring dropped off. Although some people called it a slump, I felt it was the result of Jokinen having more defensive responsibilities. Staal has tremendous speed, but his emphasis on offense was one of the contributing factors to his poor plus/minus percentage.

What I disagree with entirely is the suggestion that Skinner lacked effort. It is not in Skinner’s DNA to take a ticket and ride as a passenger. Playing first line or second line center in hockey in the NHL is as demanding an NFL quarterback or NBA point guard. There has never been any NFL young quarterback or NBA point guard who didn’t make baffling mistakes. Skinner for his position and experience at center has made remarkably few of those kinds of mind-freeze mistakes. Faulk, by way of example, has made even fewer mistakes; but we saw one last night. These mistakes are all part of an important learning curve. There is absolutely no correlation between lack of experience, which is what I believe is the root cause, and lack of effort, which some people are now suggesting lies at the cause of the mental errors.

by abramsdoug on Feb 11, 2012 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

Whether or not you think he was giving full effort or not, the fact remains that he has been atrocious defensively these last few games, was directly responsible for 2 goals last night, and has been less than impressive offensively.

by hurricane9 on Feb 11, 2012 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

I would have a tough time believing

you have done analysis on Skinner’s DNA. But in seriousness, he just looks “foggy”. Like he still may not be all there. There’s a lack of concentration and effort. Watch top centers in the league. There shouldn’t be an energy level concern. It’s going hard for 35-45 seconds and getting off the ice. Don’t float on D so you enough energy to go 1-on-4 on offense. A two-way center goes hard at both ends and knows how to play below the goal line – in both zones. I don’t see that from Skinner. I think some of it may be that he’s young, some may be the concussion still, but mostly, I think it’s too much fame too early. He needs to grow up and quick. Call this season a pass due to bad play and injury, but he needs to come back next season quick and on fire.

by The Gottfather on Feb 11, 2012 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

Was not impressed by Skinner this game

Hate to say it, but I’ve noticed him coasting in a couple games now, just cruising instead of busting his butt to get back on defense. Someone with a last name that rhymes with Gleason needs to sit his ass down in the locker room and get him to bust his hump a little bit more. I know #53 is the last off the ice in practice, I get that, but there’s more to the NHL than honing your skills and playing 1-on-5.

Phew, that felt better. Jeff Skinner is a GREAT talent, we are so lucky to have him on this team, he’ll be a huge cog in the wheel next season as we make a legit push at a playoff position.

Hey where is Jussi Jokinen, does he still play for us?

sittler27, as you look back on your hockey career, can you think of a game where as you think about your intensity and desire that you personally took a game off? I would be very surprised if the honest answer was yes, for this one game my heart wasn’t in it. I understand that are games where one’s body won’t get going despite all the desire in the world.

I think for players like Skinner & Ruutu they have an inner voice that makes them want to win at all costs, no matter what the sacrifice. Scott Walker had that inner voice as well. Very few players get to the NHL without being highly competitive and motivated; but players like Skinner, Ruutu, and Walker are a knotch above. I am not suggesting you adhere to the Skinner had too much success too soon position; but I would like your insights. You strike me as the kind of player I called “Walk Through Fire.” Some athletes would literally walk through fire if that meant their team would win. Your comments give me that impression. Watching Skinner and Ruutu play hockey, I am 100% positive they’d walk through fire if that is what it took.

Another tough game. If we were 50% in OT, we might still be in the playoff picture. What really sucked is that we looked like we conceded going to a shootout and didn’t play to the finally whistle. We are obviously a much improved team under Muller in terms of effort and game plan, but we still are lacking in the player department.

I thought Staal had a very good game, but he ifs still reluctant to shoot the puck. Even his goal was an attempted pass that came back to him. If he could have one of those games that everything goes his way and gets a hat trick, I think it will really boost his confidence.

Ruutu also had one hell of a game; simply complete. If negotiations are taking place, he’s going to be getting every dollar.

Skinner, like some have mentioned, is not playing well right now. I don’t think he can handle the center position and all of its responsibilities. I think he’s better at wing and Jussi & LaRose/Bowman are not helping take any pressure off him.

The funny thing over the past 2 games is that we score and its answered by the other team, we score and again its answered by the other team, then a mistake in OT seals the game. I just hope that we can get rid of some dead weight this offseason and bring in a few pieces that will help us be a playoff team in 2013.

JR; please dump some players and bring the kids up to stay!

by PackPride17 on Feb 11, 2012 10:00 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Not sure what we should do about Skinner’s line right now. We have basically come full circle from the beginning of the year where Skinner’s line was great and Staal’s was an atrocity to Staal’s line being great and Skinner’s being an atrocity.

The problem is that we don’t have another top 6 forward. Jokinen is in a huge slump and isn’t exactly doing anything impressive, but he has to be in the top 6 on this team. And he needs to be a center right now, even if he doesn’t like the position. But who plays on his other wing? Bowman isn’t now or ever going to be a top 6 forward and shouldn’t be there. LaRose…no. Without splitting up any lines, we are left with bringing up prospects. Dalpe isn’t consistent enough to play there right now in my opinion. The only other two top wingers that I think could play there are Boychuk and Dadonov, but they have been less than impressive in the AHL. Maybe it is time to give one or both of them a shot. The other option could be bringing Brent up to play the 2nd line center, but I doubt his offensive talent could help that line.

by hurricane9 on Feb 11, 2012 10:56 AM EST reply actions

It would be interesting to see if we can find anything in common between Skinner’s line at the beginning of the season and Staal’s line now.

by Jamie Kellner on Feb 11, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Would that be your favorite Finn? ;)

I don’t know what the answer is short-term to get the second line jumpstarted but I would start by flippling Jokinen and Skinner. I know Jokinen has been MIA for long stretches of the season and may not be in love with playing center but I think it needs to happen. I’ve never questioned Jussi’s ability to play the full sheet of ice at full-speed and the one thing I think he’s done well all year is play defensively responsible hockey. At this point I would lean to having Jokinen centering Skinner and Dalpe/Bowman/Dadonov.

It’s been beat to death but we really need another top 6 forward. Our problems are only going to be confounded if Ruutu is playing in a different jersey next year.

I was just being a smart ass.

It’s definitely robbing Peter to pay Paul on the top two lines, because the talent is just too thin.

True--and it is the issue

We have TWO top six forwards on the first line—Staal and Ruutu, and a good complimentary player in Tlusty who is coming into his own, and if he continues like he has in the last month, he’s making a case that he’s a good “complimentary” top six forward.

Skinner is the only top six forward on the second line, and this year, since his injury, Jussi isn’t playing like a complimentray top six forward like he did the last two years, so this line is failing. Add to this Skinner playing at Center where he doesn;t have the defensive accumen and becomes the focus of the defense and it’s too much pressure, thinking, and it’s costing his game—when the pressure was off lat year—he delivered. He may well deliver at Center down the road, but for now? Sorry, he’s not ready yet.

We definitely need a true top six forward who is a scoring threat….

Summary of Canes 2011-2012

It’s definitely robbing Peter to pay Paul on the top two lines, because the talent is just too thin.

This statement is the best one sentence summary of 2011-2012 Hurricanes I’ve seen. Everything else is just an explanation of that thesis sentence.

What's the matter with Sinner, he's ok....

This is the year to find out if Skinner is a center or a wing. The only way you figure it out is you let the guy play the position. If he wants to be a center and the organization believes he has the potential to contribute in that role, that gives his off season work a nice focus. He clearly must improve on defense and with what he’s shown so far, I believe that will happen. Who knows, by the time he’s 21 maybe he will be a more complete player. Shesh, let up on the kid he’s still one of the top offensive players.

I also agree that since his return he doesn’t look like the same player. That said, in fairness you must consider the fact that he’s not on the same line, he missed a lot of time right when a new coach and system were being put into place, and he’s playing a new role. So, you can’t really compare him before and after. This isn’t the same team in terms of the on-ice product as it was at the start of the season. There were plenty of times when he was not in the mix on D last year and earlier this year, this isn’t new, its a young player developing in the NHL. Opportunities are created, they rarely come gift wrapped. I believe he will be a center in this league and it helps to have a role model like Sutter to show him the ropes.

This is something I don’t get. While we are limited with top 6 talent, our system appears pretty full of centers or potential centers. The area we need drastic improvement is on the wings. We have Staal, Sutter, & Brent as NHL centers. Jussi, Skinner, & Ruutu can play center. Rask, Nash, & Sutter42 are potential centers in the immediate future.

Just let Jussi, who has the best faceoff percentage, play center until Nash or Rask is ready to take over. Let Skinner perfect his left wing position.

JR; please dump some players and bring the kids up to stay!

I think the issue is

Outside of Rask, none of the players mentioned profiles as more than a 3rd line center. Maybe if Grigorenko falls to the canes you get a top 6 center, but Nash is best suited as a 3/4 as are sutter42 and the remainder of Charlotte guys. I wouldn’t mind seeing Brandon Sutter get a shot at 2nd line duties with Skinner and Jokinen while putting Brent with Dwyer and Nodl and bringing Nash up with Rosie and Stew. What’s the worst that can happen? At least Jussi and Skinner would have a Defensive specialist to help mask their floating.

I just look at it like this; if we are going to be talent-lite in the top 6 and our 3rd line is going to be a shutdown line, then we need our 4th line to be some young skilled players that can score. Our 4th line needs to do more than just cancel out the other teams 4th line.

JR; please dump some players and bring the kids up to stay!

by PackPride17 on Feb 11, 2012 6:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

How many teams

have a 4th line full of young kids that can score? It’s just not something coaches in the NHL do. Even teams like the Red Wings throw out grinders and vets on the 4th line. I think repurposing Sutter to a 2nd line, responsible D guy could give Skinner and Jussi a little more leeway on their “floating” and also allow Sutter to expand his offensive skill set (think Patrice Bergeron in Boston). That would allow at least one young guy (Nash or Sutter42) to move up to the big squad.

by The Gottfather on Feb 11, 2012 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

The bottom line is something must be done because it appears management its unwilling to do what its necessary to improve our top 6.

For the past couple of seasons we’ve subtracted more than we added. At least JR appears to be trying to do something to remedy that.

Sutter is good offensively, but he isn’t a top 6 center. At least not at this point in his career. Remember that the other team’s top lines are not highly defensively responsible. He belongs on that line for a few more years. Maybe in a year or two when Nash is ready to take that role can he move up, but we will see.
