Call Columbus
Word is that Columbus is putting Rick Nash on the market. Now I know it is highly unlikely but JR should at least for laughs call the Jackets to see if there is a possibility of a deal. I don't think you need me to tell you what a Staal-Nash-Anybody Else line can do.
Now with Nash's $7.8 mil cap hit for the next six years it will probably will not happen for the Canes but it would be interesting to find out if something would be possible.

Good thought, simple because JR needs to see if he can meet a price just to get at the table……..seems like a 1st Round, top 6 or top 4 D roster player (so some say) and top prospect will put JR at the table with other teams. I have no idea if that is correct but he has to be thinking about that fantasy first line pairing with Staal.

I believe the assets are there. It is the cap space that would be a problem.
For assets: a high first round pick (possibly first overall, remember Nash was a one-overall pick himself; on D, Faulk, R. Murphy, McBain, Dumoulin; forwards, Dalpe, Rask, Skinner (yeah that would be tough but you have to bring him in on this); G, Peters, M. Murphy (I think the Jackets would want someone more established like the backup in Vancouver)
I believe a deal can be made with what is listed. But I don’t think the team can afford the cap number. But who knows?
Skinner is more valuable as an asset than Nash. No way you even discuss him. With the eight-year age difference and contract situations, Carolina would be silly to even do that straight up.

Real issue
Nash would have to waive his no trade to com ehere—a non -playoff team, and maybe not a playoff team next year given our history… Would you waive your no-trade for that??
Adding Nash would make the Canes a playoff team, if not this season. Of course it would be a long shot to get him to even consider in the first place.
Well, that’s our view—but if we don’t re-sign Ruutu? If JR doesn’t draft a top forward because we got Nash would that be the case? Arguably not. We’d still be short top six forwards. Therefore still likely not a playoff team. That’s my point—we do not know… Nash would not know, and our recent history doesn;t look good, so again, doubt he’d take the same view you have.
call Columbus for...
Jeff Carter ,even though he has 9yrs @$5.25m that contract is long ,but I can see Carter playing until he’s 36 ,and a true 1st/2nd line center who has scored 84pts would be a better fit here imo with Staal/Carter/Sutter down the middle the Cane’s would be set for years with those center-men.
If we took on Nash’s salary we’d have over 22 million tied up to just three players (Staal, Nash and Ward). That would be absurd for a budget team like ourselves. Like hellfish said, I’d rather take on Carter’s even at 9 years.
"I'm not going to waste my time with Tuukka Rask" - Cam Ward
That is correct. That is one of the reasons why I brought up the number to begin with. Naturally there are also the contracts to be paid later like Skinner and Faulk if they are kept. Like I said this was not likely but I would suggest JR send out a feeler on this. I think it would be a gauge on the value of his players.
Carter’s head is still in Philadelphia. Sure attitudes can change but I would not want to make that commitment.
Jeff Carter and Alexander Semin
The two most potentially affordable (well, high cost, but not crazy high) players are the moment who are impact players are Jeff Carter and Alexander Semin. Both have their question marks; but talent is not one of the issues with them. I don’t adhere to the Jeff Carter has a bad attitude view of things. Carter is an elite talent who has devastated the Hurricanes over the years. Semin, too, has destroyed the Hurricanes on many occasions. There are no guaranteed quick fixes; unless one considers signing Parise to a $7.5 million a year long term contract the answer, which it might well be.
Well, I wouldn’t say Carter has a bad atiitude. But what was called into question in both now and when he was in Philly is his total comittment. It was thought in Philly he liked to have a good time and enjoy his fame and paycheck more than he wanted to totally commit to playing his best hockey every game. That’s the question mark. He’s good and has the talent—why isn’t he more consistent? The question is about his commitment to be all that he can be on the ice vs how much he’d rather go have a good time.
There was an article not so long ago (on Puck Daddy?) talking about how GMs were inquiring about trading for Carter since he was on the trading block, but being turned away when they found out that he has been showing some attitude problems. It’s not just consistency, that’s well known already. These GMs founded out, possibly from Columbus’ GM, that he had been acting poorly in the locker room and had expressed displeasure at playing on a non-playoff team.
Not condoning a move to get Carter, but will say this …
If there’s one guy who can relate to Jeff Carter, it’s Rod Brind`Amour. Hell, they even both wore 17 in Philly.

I think I understand…….
Roddy made it work in Raleigh even when he had reservations, maybe even strong ones when he first got here…….it seems the stories out of Columbus say Carter has given up on the organization and only after a year, maybe the entire time.
Besides, I can’t image Roddy doing 2 am days at the local bars with a couple of his buddies……some of the images of those Philly parties with Carter, Richards and others are pretty telling.

Yep since it interferred with his game and that is the reason Philly traded him
Party in moderation, have a good time without getting yourself into a compromising situation, decide whats first , spending your money or making your self the best hockey player you can……..the book is written on Carter don’t you think?

70-point scorer who is totally responsible on the defensive end. Terrible place to be, huh?

So you are advocating, rather strongly, that character off the ice has no bearing on whether they should be in a Canes uniform…..now don’t let me put words in your mouth but is that what you are strongly suggesting?
And….again don’t let me put words in your mouth, but Carter’s season long and recent, obvious negative actions and demeanor about being in a Columbus uniform, something that became public, also does not matter even though it might have effect his relationship with current players and fans?

Certainly not.
I’m advocating that talent should win out when a team is making personnel decisions. If your organization is dysfunctional (as Columbus is and has been for some time), players aren’t going to want to be there. Compare that to Carolina, where players are almost universally complimentary of the organization, the area, the fans, and anything else they could say about being a ‘Cane, even when the team is not particularly successful on the ice. So I’m glad we’re not in Columbus’ shoes.

One of the main reasons why Columbus may be dysfunctional very well may be Carter, or at least a large part of it. If that were actually true, when Columbus made the decision to trade for Carter they actually followed your advice and picked talent above character.
The GM of Columbus will be fired because of that it appears, but of course you will not suffer the same result

Lets all say a word of thanks, that you are not the GM of Anything
because the Columbus GM made a mistake with Carter, plain and simple, and you would have as well with these comments…………..
As long as LA tolerates his potential behavior, Carter might do well with his buddy along side……….it remains to be seen if Team #3 will do any better with him than the other two.

Umm...
Philly did pretty ok with him. They won a Cup, and only missed the playoffs once with Carter there as one of their primary players.

The results are the results…..Philly shipped Richards and Carter off on the mid-night train and then the organization breathed a sigh of relief and moved on. Columbus has done the same thing after one year. A trend is a trend and this trend for Carter is pointing down.

I can’t image either Carter or Semin as the kind of player either JR or Muller would want to manage, especially long term……both bring baggage. You have to think that sometime between now and the start of next season better options for a top 6 winger would be available.
If JR decides to be patient until about draft time or even perhaps July 1, past activity suggests the NHL landscape of possible top six forwards will increase significantly.

What is going to happen in the labor agreement? Will the floor go up, down, or away? Salary cap go up or down? Will teams be able to write off bad contracts with no penalty?
Recall that the Hurricanes picked up some guy that was being paid more by his old team than he was by the Canes. His name was Ray something or other :-)
Canes were a non-playoff team for 2 seasons, then they signed Stillman, the Wizard, Kaberle (I think), and Gerber (actually Gerber was signed in 04). The rest is history – or at least hanging in the rafters of the RBC Center.
The floor will never go away while the cap exists.
This is simply not a possibility; the players will not allow it.
