Ward With Shutout: Hurricanes 3, Bruins 0

Cam Ward earned his third shutout of the season and the Carolina Hurricanes swept their season series with the Boston Bruins with a 3-0 win on Thursday night in Boston. It was the first season sweep over the Bruins in franchise history for the Canes.

The Hurricanes scored a goal in each period and according to coach Kirk Muller, played one their best games of the season. While the Bruins dominated the shots on goal stat early, (22 shots in the first period), the Canes actually had more scoring chances and took advantage of them.

Eric Staal scored the first goal, Tuomo Ruutu made a nifty backhander for the second, and Brandon Sutter scored the third. Sutter made a great play on the puck, taking it away from the Boston defense, which set up Ruutu's goal.

In all, Ward made 47 saves on the night. The goalie was quick to praise his defense after the game because there were few second chances for the Bruins to take advantage of.

Cory will have the game analysis up shortly.

The Canes travel back home to battle the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.

Star-divide

Game Notes:

  • The Canes had 31 shots on goal led by Jaro Spacek and Pat Dwyer with four each
  • Once it turned 3-0, you had the feeling the Bruins would start to goon it up and Milan Lucic did not disappoint.
  • Jay Harrison and Ruutu has three hits each, team highs.
  • The team only won 30% of their faceoffs in this one.

Lol, phrasing made me laugh for some reason. Great win, boys! Good write up as always, Bob. Bring on L.A!

Here's to a successful 2012!

i was thinking the same thing

after the second period. if the bs didnt score in the first five mins we would see the goon squad again. it did get a little ugly but nothing like the last game in boston. as a side note, i dont think there is any other team i like beating more than the bruins. old wales conference animosity i suppose.

+1

For me it’s second only to beating Buffalo. Then the Penguins check in at third. Just my personal ticks. =p

In a otherwise dark season the one bright spot is sweeping the Bruins.

Very odd, really but may it just shows how thin the line is between being a successful winning team and a losing team.

nice job by pretty much everybody on the team

how’d the kids do? well…

Nash – 9:00 TOI, even +/-, 1 shot, 1 hit, 3/6 on faceoffs
Bowman – 16:13 TOI, even +/-, 3 shots, 2 hits, 1 blocked shot

The good vibes were everywhere…even Gleason had 2 hits and a blocked shot and played relatively inspired hockey. Hoping the Islanders game was a brain fart.

Would like to see Peters get a couple of games as the season moves along to see if he’s worth keeping around. Just sayin…

"The Carolina Hurricanes will keep President and General Manager Jim Rutherford for at least four more years after resigning him to a contract extension that runs through the 2015-16 season."

As Stinky said, a feel good game. A game and a four game series to remembr and imprint on their cllective psyche for next season. this game reflected exactly the kind of play and effort the coaching staff wants, and the players all played to potential. As Muller likes to point out—no passengers. Contributions from each line, support for defenders from the forwards, support for forwards from the defense, and tying up sticks, clearing rebounds and keeping sight lines clear for Cam.

Nice.

somebody should make up some t-shirts 60 minutes - no passengers for the team.

hell, even i’ll buy one of those.

Brodeur-ian Statistic

Cam Ward is now 19-18-8, earning 46 points. The rest of the ’Canes goalie committee has managed to earn 1 point via an OTL.

It’s entirely conceivable that the remaining 29 games could see an additional 0 points earned by the backup goalies. Yes I understand it’s truly been a team suckiness factor to cause this.

Does anybody know what the modern day record would be for goalie’s percentage of team points ?
Currently, Cam is 46/47= .979. Going to be tough to beat that.

Passengers

Lol every time I hear Muller say that “passenger” quote i think of the Capt. Morgan’s TV commercial with the one sailor in one boat towing the whole crew in another with that song playing “I am a passenger”…Pretty much sums it up.
