I think we need to start being realistic about the market this offseason.
To get Nash we would have to give up too much. Which we don't have, plus the fact that if we gave up those pieces we would have to bring up talent from Charlotte, (most of which) our fan base hasn't been impressed with.
Parise would actually be a good fit in my opinion. However, with the other large market teams that are interested and the fact that we just aren't a current contender doesn't bold well to bring him to Raleigh. He'd probably be better off just staying in Jersey if he's really trying to win a Cup.
Suter reportedly wants to stay in the West...if Nashville is west than I'm unsure of my geography...But I just don't see us able to lure him to Raleigh if he's unhappy in Nashville. They are, yet again, more of a contender than we are.
And that leaves me with our best option. Jordan Staal. Why? He can likely be had for a pick or two combined with a player or two. Who would that be? I would think that those possible players could be Jussi or Tuomo paired with a player like Joslin or Stewart. Does most of the fanbase want those guys gone? Well yes and no, but we have to give something to get something. I like Jussi and Tuomo so I would hope to move just one of them. I would even go as far as giving them our first round pick for this year. I wouldn't mind doing that because this draft isn't all that great. A pick that high should contribute very soon but it seems as if this year that won't be happening.
Go with a proven commodity in J. Staal. The fact that he would boost our penalty kill instantly and even improve the power play with the chemistry with Eric could greatly improve the team for next year. It could even be possible that grabbing up Jordan could push Jared to elevate his game and make a push for a roster spot. That last sentence is certainly a stretch but still possible. I just think that bringing him in with his brother(s) is something he wants to do, but more importantly, improves this franchise and could be a move that makes it possible for others to want to come here too.
We have to start somewhere. Jordan Staal is what makes the other pieces possible. Maybe not likely, but still possible to get another free agent after landing Jordan. But the bottom line is that the current makeup of the team isn't going to cut it. We need to improve. By adding a good piece it's possible that more could fall into place...
