The Six Longest-tenured GMs in the NHL

JR is the second-longest-tenured GM in the NHL right now. Learning that fact made me want to check up on the other guys whose longevity is similar to his and what they've accomplished lately.

My main question from this data:

Out of the four major US sports, hockey is by far the most improvisational and out of the control of the coaches -- why do many Hurricanes fans clamor for the firing of a coach when the team hits hard times, while JR, the man in charge of who plays for the team, seems to avoid all the heat?

1. Lou Lamoriello - NJ Devils (since 1987)

5 playoff appearances in past 7 seasons.

(Career with team: 3 Stanley Cups; 5 Conference Championships; 9 Division Championships.)

2. Jim Rutherford - Carolina (since 1994)

1 playoff appearance in past 7 seasons.

(Career with team: 1 Stanley Cup; 2 Conference Championships; 3 Division Championships.)

3. Darcy Regier - Buffalo (since 1997)

3 playoff appearances in past 7 seasons.

(Career with team: 1 Presidents Trophy; 1 Conference Championship; 2 Division Championships.)

4. George McPhee - Washington (since 1997)

6 playoff appearances in past 7 seasons.

(Career with team: 1 Presidents Trophy; 1 Conference Championship; 7 Division Championships.)

5. Ken Holland - Detroit (GM since 1997)

7 playoff appearances in past 7 seasons.

(Career with team: 3 Stanley Cups; 4 Presidents Trophies; 4 Conference Championships; 10 Division Championships.)

6. David Poile - Nashville (since 1997)

5 playoff appearances in past 7 seasons.

(Career with team: No Championships.)

One last note of context:

In the time since Carolina won the cup in 2006, one team has won a Stanley Cup and later fired that GM (Anaheim Ducks). Why the long leash for JR?
