One of the all-time fan favorites, Jussi Jokinen is an enigma. He shows up big in big games from time to time, then disappears during long stretches of the regular season. He does not deal well with physicality, but plays positionally well in the offensive zone. Generally speaking, his passing is spot-on, and when he works himself into a shooting position he is usually hitting the net. This season he has seemed out of place centering the third line, and his two goals have come (I believe, I may be wrong) on the powerplay. We need help in the lineup; is Jussi the guy? Or does it make sense to trade him for a true third-line center and/or physical defender?
Our first line is set with Staal/Semin/Tlusty. The second line looks pretty decent with Staal/Skinner/Dwyer. The fourth line has a bunch of guys, centered by Tim Brent, who can put in some solid minutes. So where does Jussi fit in? We have nobody in the system who has proven to be a legit center for that third line, and Jussi is out of place at center. When Ruutu comes back, does Muller put him on the third line? If so, then Jussi makes sense there. I personally don't feel Ruutu is a bottom-six guy, and he would make a KILLER line out of the second if he swapped places with Dwyer. Then what is the third line? A checking line? A scoring line?
To me, it makes sense to package Jokinen with an AHL forward (or two) and maybe Rosie and his overblown $1.9 m contract for some sort of help this year AND next. Jokinen is a proven commodity having a down year, and would be legit trade bait. Keeping him on the team in his current role under-values his skills, but there really is nowhere for him to go but down if he stays.
Trade him now while we can still get something decent in return.
