Cam Ward makes 45 saves as the Canes find a way to beat Sens, 3-2 in OT

This game will not go down as one of the great ones in team history, but the Carolina Hurricanes used clutch goaltending and timely scoring to get by the Ottawa Senators, 3-2 in overtime on Thursday night at ScotiaBank Place.

Cam Ward made 45 saves, several of them against open shooters, and kept the game close throughout as the Sens dominated the Canes through parts of the contest, especially in the second period when the home team outshot the visitors 17-3.

Ottawa outshot Carolina in every period and ended up with a 47 to 26 advantage, but to the Hurricanes credit they hung tough and did what they needed to do to give themselves a chance to win.

With just 1:57 left in a pretty evenly played opening period, Erik Karlsson got the Sens on the board first as he out-fought Jamie McBain for a loose puck at the side of the net to make it 1-0, Ottawa.

The second period was almost all Sens, but 12:59 into the period, Drayson Bowman hit an open Chad LaRose with a perfect pass and LaRose skated in alone to beat Craig Anderson top shelf for his first goal of the year to tie things up.

The Sens would go up by one again later in the period when Daniel Alfredsson found a spot short side at a tight angle to beat Ward.

The third period would go back and forth until Alfredsson sent the puck over the glass when pressured by Jiri Tlusty. During the ensuing powerplay, Alexander Semin would tie things up on a slick shot after receiving a nice pass from Eric Staal. Semin drew iron on a couple of shots earlier in the game and seemed to look relieved that this one went in.

The assist extended E. Staal's scoring streak to seven games.

Semin would be called for a penalty a little bit later as he reached to steal a puck and tripped Karlsson, but his teammates killed the advantage to eventually send the game to overtime.

The Sens outshot the Canes 5-3 in the extra period, but Jay Harrison knocked in the game winner off of a Jordan Staal rebound left in the crease by Anderson.

The win gives the Hurricanes a 5-4 overall record and makes them 2-1 on this road trip. They will next take on the Flyers on Saturday afternoon.

Game Notes:

  • The Canes special teams did well this night. They were 1-2 on the powerplay and killed off all three of their penalties.
  • The team was very patient on that last powerplay and kept working the puck until Semin finally got off his shot. After hitting the post and crossbar so many times in recent games, will this be the goal that opens the flood gates for the Russian?
  • Jordan Staal had a team high six shots on goal.
  • Joni Pitkanen and Justin Faulk each had over 24 minutes of ice time.
  • The team had 24 blocked shots led by Pitkanen and Faulk with four each. The Finn also had a team high three takeaways.
  • The Canes were credited with 27 hits, led by Drayson Bowman and Bobby Sanguinetti with four each.
