It is clear that the Canes will not make the playoffs this season. It is also clear that the Canes will have at least a top 10 draft pick and very likely a top 5 pick or better with a reasonable chance of a lottery win for the #1 pick.
If seems to be the general feeling on this blog that the Canes need to re-tool the defense and re-tool the bottom six slots. There also seems to be some sense that a backup goalie is needed because neither Ellis or Peters have really "stepped up and grabbed the #1 slot" in Cam's absence as Muller said he wanted. This list will be full plate for JR to accomplish in just one summer.
So what does JR do?
Here are some alternatives:
Trade as many players as he can for veteran help in defense between now and the start of next season. Who should be traded and who should be targeted? Is a good question.
Trade the high 1st round pick in the up-coming draft and maybe current prospects and roster players to another team for veteran help on defense. Some of you might not be too keen on this alternative.
Acquire one or several free agents for all these needs after July 1. Since with the significant reduction in the cap there will be teams shedding salary and there seems to be a feeling among the mainstream media that more free agents will be available and of good quality. The competition might be tough but then again a number of teams may be forced to sit on the sidelines because of the cap. Again who should be targeted.
Obviously he might be able to obtain new talent by using all of the above alternatives.
Are there other alternatives?
Just for fun, what do you think? What do you want the Canes to look like at the start of next season. A poll below and comments are welcomed.
