The draft this year is undeniably one of the great drafts talent-wise. Many feel that it rivals 2003. Having said this, there is certainly an abundance of top level talent at the top of the draft. But the real interesting part of this draft for me is the 2nd round. Many experts have labeled the blue line potential from this draft as excellent. My feeling is that the steals of the draft (well maybe not steals but the biggest successes) will come from this segment. Guys like Ian McCoshen, Dillon Heatherington, Jonathan - Ismael Diaby, Brett Pesce, and Steve Santini all have Top 4 potential. Add to that the plethora of big bodied forwards that could be available (Bailey, McCarron, Hayden, and De La Rose), it seems that this year, more than any other in recent memory, is one that cries out for trading down at the draft to pick up an extra 2nd rounder or two.
On some of the message boards it was noted that Edmonton is interested in moving up in the draft. A deal surrounding our 1st (#5 overall) for their 1st (#7 overall) plus #37 overall is a deal that is crying out to get done. We would still most likely have a shot at one of the near elite forward prospects (Nichushkin, Monahan, or Lindholm) with the 7th pick and we'd pick up that valuable 2nd rounder. I would be very happy to end up after the 1st 2 rounds with something like Lindholm, McCoshen, and Bailey. Mix and match from the list above, and there's really no bad outcome here. Unless Barkov drops to #5 or we're really set on picking Nichushkin, I'd do this deal in a heartbeat and walk away with a huge smile.
If we really wanted to shake things up, I could see us packaging 2 of Dalpe, McBain, or Bowman for picks/prospects or the stay at home, big-bodied defenseman. The point is that we have some opportunity to upgrade our prospect pool right now, at this draft and we should jump right into that. If McBain, Bowman, and/or Dalpe are not up to the task nor in this teams immediate future, we should make the move at a deep draft such as this one to upgrade our farm.
We have 5 picks in a deep draft. We should do all that we can to build that number to 7 or 8...or get comparable prospects....and we should do that through a series of moves that include trading down at the draft and moving players not in our future plans.
