So I was bored and reminiscing through the past about the Canes, and remember we tried to make a move for Sergei Federov. I did not remember exactly how the move was going down since I was only about 7 years old at the time haha, so this was vaguely in my head. But I did some digging.
But it was 97-98 off season I guess, and Federov was holding out looking for a new contract. He was not getting that contract that he wanted with Detroit, and held out through the start of the season. At that time he was considered one of the best two way forwards in the game, and one of the most lethal offensive player in the league. So the Canes attempted to throw an offer sheet at him, and he accepted the offer sheet with Carolina. Of course Federov never came to Carolina, and the offer sheet was matched by Detroit.
I know I always say to my self, do not worry about the past. But it would of defiantly been interesting to see how Federov would of panned out with the Hurricanes. I wonder how much differently that 2001-2002 Stanley cup final when our Canes battled the Red Wings would of looked. He was pretty productive vs the Canes that series with 6 points in 5 games.
This was just something I wanted to share with you peeps, in this off season, ughh! haha to long of an off season. But can you think of any moves in our past that the team has made that you think could of drastically shaped the Canes differently? Maybe even including the Whaler days?
This is for another day of exploring haha, but in Hartford we had Chris Pronger, then traded him for Brendan Shanahan, and then Shanahan did not like the idea of moving to Carolina, so we traded him to Detroit for Keith Primeau, who of course Keith got traded to Philly for Brind'Amour :) (This took course in about 6 years)
