Crunch Time For Carolina

The loss to the Florida Panthers on March 6th really hurt the small chances for any playoff run for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The loss to the Florida Panthers on March 6th really hurt the small chances for any playoff run for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes have 14 games left on their schedule and presently find themselves 8 points behind eighth place Boston, who currently holds the coveted final playoff spot in the East.

Even though the Canes have been one of the hottest teams in the league since the first of the year, they put themselves into such a deep hole during the first part of the season that it was almost impossible to dig their way out of it.

To their credit, the team never gave up though because mathematically, they still had a chance.  But the time is drawing near when even a remote chance could soon be gone.

A loss to Boston on Tuesday night would just about seal their fate.

New Prospect Oskar Osala Just Wants a Chance

Newly acquired winger Oskar Osala warms up for the Carolina Hurricanes. (photo by LTD)

The Carolina Hurricanes made a number of deals on trade deadline day and acquired several new assets in a short period of time.  The most fruitful trade, at least at this point in time, is the one that sent Joe Corvo to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Brian Pothier, Oskar Osala, and a second round pick in the 2011 draft.

Pothier has been a perfect fit in the room and has contributed immediately.  The Carolina franchise is stockpiling draft picks and the second rounder will certainly come in handy next year.

But several fans have the most hope for Osala, a young prospect from Finland who has the size, (6' 4), most scouts drool over, and potential upside to be a scorer in the NHL.

The winger was recently interviewed by a Finnish website and one of our friends from Finland, Markus, was nice enough to bring the article to our attention and translate it.

Bryzgalov Shuts Down Carolina: Coyotes 4, Hurricanes 0

The Phoenix Coyotes put an end to the Carolina Hurricanes eight game winning streak at home on Saturday night with a dominating, 4-0 performance.  Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was excellent in the game and stopped all 29 of Carolina's shots.  It was the eighth shutout of the year for the big Russian goalie, which now leads the league.

Lee Stempniak and Martin Hanzal each had a pair of goals for the visitors.

The Hurricanes generated a few good chances and out-shot the powerful Western Conference team by a 29-20 margin, but they failed to screen the talented Phoenix goalie enough and could not capitalize on any rebounds or second chances all night.

Coach Paul Maurice seemed to think that was key part of the game, as well as the fact that the team was missing injured star Brandon Sutter.  The young center is listed as day-to-day and should be able to return to action on Tuesday.

Phoenix Coyotes right winger Radim Vrbata (17), makes a return to the RBC Center on Saturday night.

The Phoenix Coyotes, (40-22-5) are visiting tonight and they will be out to ruin the Carolina Hurricanes, (28-31-8) eight game winning streak at home.  The Coyotes are currently in fourth place in the powerful Western Conference and have a three game winning streak of their own on the line.

The Canes are still one of the hottest teams in the league and have an 8-1-1 record in their last 10 games.

The home team will be without the services of their second line center, Brandon Sutter.  The youngster is suffering from the affects of a lower body injury and his status is day-to-day.  Jerome Samson has been recalled from Albany and will fill in on the fourth line.

Samson is Albany's leading scorer and was recently named the AHL's "Player of the Week."  He had seven points in three games last week which added to his career best of 32 goals and 30 assists so far this season.  His goal total is presently second highest in the AHL.

Brian Pothier scored the game winning goal just 23 seconds into overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3 Thursday night at the RBC.

The Penguins out-shot a tired Carolina team by a 40-21 margin, but rookie goaltender Justin "Pete Dawg" Peters stopped 37 of those 40 shots and was named first star of the game.

Ray Whitney, Zach Boychuk, and Eric Staal scored the other goals for the Canes.

Brandon Sutter was injured in the first period and left the game with what was identified as a lower body injury, but Paul Maurice said after the game that the young center should be cleared to play on Friday.

I posted an NHL realignment plan over on Japers' Rink, and it would mean big changes for Carolina. I'd love to hear your input (in the comments over there) on whether the plan would work.

Player of the week part deux....
This Saturday Canes will be hosting the Phoenix Coyotes and left wing Taylor Pyatt.
The 28 year old was signed as a free agent to a one year deal with the Coyotes in September of this year. To date he has 9G & 8A, he scored his 100th career goal 3/10/10.
He hails from none other than Thunder Bay Ont. (anyone surprised?) His dad was drafted by the Red Wings in 1973 and also played for the Capitals and Colorado Rockies (haven't heard that in a while), his brother Tom (who's eyes are equally as pretty) currently plays for the Montreal Canadiens.
His favorite player is Mark Messier, fav band is Cold Play. He has a dog named Ranger (awww).
enjoy!
Our player of the week comes from The Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins (WOW, that really hurt to type). 26 yr old Max Talbot was an 8th round draft pick by the Pens during the 2002 entry draft. When he's not filming commercials, he actually plays center for the team and scored the GWG for his team to win the Stanley Cup last year. Although his stats are less than stellar this season(32 GP, 1G, 4A), photo ops ARE!! Some fun Facts about max, he likes to vacay in the Dominican Republic, Cold Play is one of his favorite bands and he is a big fan of football and UFC. OK ladies, enjoy Max!! (and just so you know he's got to be hot in order for me to lift my NO PENS CLAUSE, just this once ;)
