Our player of the week comes from The Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins (WOW, that really hurt to type). 26 yr old Max Talbot was an 8th round draft pick by the Pens during the 2002 entry draft. When he's not filming commercials, he actually plays center for the team and scored the GWG for his team to win the Stanley Cup last year. Although his stats are less than stellar this season(32 GP, 1G, 4A), photo ops ARE!! Some fun Facts about max, he likes to vacay in the Dominican Republic, Cold Play is one of his favorite bands and he is a big fan of football and UFC. OK ladies, enjoy Max!! (and just so you know he's got to be hot in order for me to lift my NO PENS CLAUSE, just this once ;)

2010 NHL Draft

2010 NHL Draft

I'm gonna try to keep track of where the Canes might end up in June's draft. Right now we're 25th, and throwing out all the lottery and tiebreakers, we would pick 5th.

Others have linked this site. 88 points would give the Canes about a 75% chance to sneak into the playoffs, so they would need to go 13-3-1 or 12-2-3 to get close. 13-4 drops to 56%. Enjoy the last month (maybe?) of the season, Caniacs, and keep rooting for the boys. No matter what, we will have hockey in Carolina in 2010-11, and that's a good thing.

Albany "Potentially Close" To Getting AHL Team Back

Albany "Potentially Close" To Getting AHL Team Back

When Hurricanes executives Jim Rutherford and Jason Karmanos joined Charlotte Checkers owner Michael Kahn to announce that the Canes AHL affiliate was coming to the state, the news came with cheers from most hockey fans in North Carolina. Not cheering? The people of Albany, N.Y., who were losing not only the players they had grown accustomed to courtesy the relationship with the Hurricanes, but also their AHL franchise.

But according to a report Tuesday from the Albany Times Union, the city could land a replacement for the River Rats by the first week in March.

Bob Belber, the general manager of the Times Union Center, told the TImes Union that the arena has been in talks with a current AHL team — reportedly the Portland (Maine) Pirates — and that a deal could be in place by the first week in March, if all the details can be ironed out. One minor but noteworthy item still on the table: whether or not the River Rats name would live on.

The Pirates are the affiliate for the Sabres, and given the proximity of Albany to Buffalo — about four and a half hours, weather permitting — the teams would benefit from a similar relationship that the Hurricanes and Checkers will have next season.

Changes at 99.9 The Fan - Better Signal Coming

Changes at 99.9 The Fan - Better Signal Coming

On Wednesday, Capital Broadcasting Company, owner of 99.9 The Fan and 620 The Buzz, announced a major change to two of their local sports talk shows.

"The Insiders", otherwise known as Mike Maniscalco and Mark Thomas, left their 3-7 p.m. time slot on The Fan and will be moving to the 6-9 a.m. time slot on 620 The Buzz starting on Monday.

Adam Gold and Joe Ovies moved from their morning show on 620 The Buzz and have taken over from 3-7 on The Fan.

The station's program director and operations manager, Dave Shore, said that the change was made to create a positive step for potential growth for both shows.

I asked Shore if the change would affect Maniscalco hosting The Stormfront and The Aftermath, the pregame and postgame shows for the Carolina Hurricanes.

"We feel we provide some of the best hockey coverage in the NHL and we are committed to continuing that. Mike Maniscalco is a huge part of that success and we will not be changing anything regarding The Stormfront or the Aftermath. Mike will still be hosting those shows."

Maniscalco told me that he looked forward to the new challenge and released this statement:

"I'm happy to continue hosting with Mark Thomas and Capitol Broadcasting, and look forward to being part of the only local morning sports talk show in Raleigh."

I also asked Shore if he could confirm a rumor heard that 99.9 The Fan would be changing it's antennae location and increasing it's signal strength.

"Due to FCC regulations I can not release very much information, but I can confirm that we are taking steps to increase our signal strength. Soon fans who travel outside the general area will be very pleased with their reception".

Word has it that the new antennae location would be in Southwest Wake County and the signal strength would be significantly better. The change should take affect in a couple of months.

I figured most of y'all had seen this at the Hurricanes' site, but thought there may be a few of us that don't venture over there every day (especially during the Olympic break).

An amazing read and an amazing guy. Also check out the link to the first part of the story if you haven't already done so.

This is not really related to hockey, but since we're all following the Olympics during the break, I thought I'd post it.
