Open Thread: Edmonton at Carolina, Game 7 SCF, June 19, 2006
For the 18,978 fans who were on their feet for the entire game, it's a night they'll never forget. For those who watched on TV, it was one sweet night as well. Tonight, at 8pm on the NHL Network, the "Raise the Cup" summer series arrives at Raleigh's RBC Center, June 2006.
Canes Country had not yet opened its doors when Rod Brind`Amour grabbed the Stanley Cup from Gary Bettman after the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7, by a final score of 3-1. None of the Canes goalscorers (Aaron Ward, Frank Kaberle, Justin Williams) remain on the team, and only a few who played there will be in Carolina this season: Eric Staal, Erik Cole, Cam Ward, and Chad LaRose (with a mention of Anton Babchuk, who was a healthy scratch).
It seemed the blog needed this thread in our archives and what better way to remember than here with others who were also there when Carolina hockey earned its place in the history of the Stanley Cup.
Legace to start: Hurricanes @ Lightning, Game Day Preview
The Carolina Hurricanes are in Tampa tonight to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning, which will be the Hurricanes' last Southeast Division game of the season. Both teams were eliminated from playoff contention over the weekend, so the stakes may be more individual as Steven Stamkos remains in a tight race with League uberstars Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby for the "Rocket" Richard Trophy for most goals in a season. The 20-year old centerman was the #1 overall draftpick by the Tampa Bay franchise in 2008, and is nearing the 50-goal mark in his sophomore season, with a team that has struggled, garnering the Canadian attention across the hockeyworld for his breakout statistics. Before tonight's game, Stamkos has netted 46 goals, as has Ovechkin, while Crosby is at 47.
According to our colleagues at SBN's Lightning site "Raw Charge", Antero Niittymaki will be the starter in goal for the Bolts. The Hurricanes tweeted that Manny Legace will be given the start for this game, his first since that last minute loss to the Ottawa Senators which ended in a shootout last Thursday. This has the potential to be the veteran netminder's last start for the Hurricanes, with his contract expiring at the end of this season. The Hurricanes' GM Jim Rutherford indicated recently that he is not certain if Legace, or youngster Justin Peters, now down with the AHL playoff-bound Albany River Rats will get the back-up position to Cam Ward next fall.

Devils at Hurricanes, Game Day Preview
Tonight the Carolina Hurricanes return to the RBC Center after a successful 3-game roadtrip, picking up 5 points on the week, though losing a heartbreaker in a shootout to the Ottawa Senators Thursday night. The Canes' opponent, the New Jersey Devils, begin a final 3-game roadtrip of their own. The Devils lost in a shootout to the Chicago Blackhawks last night, after clinging to a one-goal lead until the final 30 seconds of regulation, and then immediately heading down to Raleigh in the wee hours last night.
The Hurricanes are the the Leagues' "Little Engine that Could", refusing to give up no matter the odds, and helped out by the recent collapse of the other teams in the East also vying for a place in the Conference's top eight. However, the odds continue to get longer, and with the Rangers crushing the Lightning last night, it's true now, more than ever, that every game is a "must win" for Carolina.
Tonight's question for the Canes: Will they keep playing like contenders working hard every shift to gain that playoff berth that seems out of reach, though they have not been technically eliminated?
The Devils arrive in Raleigh with their coach [Jacques Lemaire: Last two playoffs shouldn't be on Devils' minds | NJ.com], captain [Devils' Jamie Langenbrunner: We're not a great 'team' yet | NJ.com], and blogging fans [...Not Enough from Other Devils as Boston Bruins Win in OT, 1-0 - In Lou We Trust] challenging the team, who clinched a playoff berth on March 27th, to play harder to prove that they are better than their recent record indicates. Having dropped four of their last eight games in either overtime or the shootout, the Devils have only 2 wins over that eight-game span.
The question for the Devils: Will returning to Carolina, who shocked them in Newark last April thus ending their playoff run in the first round in 2009, provide the Devils' players that missing spark?
More specifics on the teams and the players, after the jump.
Islanders At Hurricanes: Game Day Preview
Sutter, Weight Meet For First Time Since Hit
With back-to-back 5-1 wins and its injured players still not ready to return, the Carolina Hurricanes will look for the same lineup to lead the way in pursuit of the team's second three-game winning streak of the month and season tonight against the visiting New York Islanders.
Staring across the ice at them will be a familiar foe, but one that hasn't played in Raleigh for more than three years: goaltender Rick DiPietro.
DiPietro's injury struggles are well documented, but since finally returning to the Isles cage he is 2-2 in five games with a decent 2.54 goals-against average and .907 save percentage for the in-the-playoff-hunt Islanders. But the RBC Center has not been a friendly — or frequent — stop for the one-time first overall draft pick.
Unseemly End for Carolina - Pens 4, Canes 1
The Carolina Hurricanes seemed to be a team of destiny. They survived two game 7's on the road, repeatedly overcame deficits in each previous series, and went on to defeat heavily favored opponents in rounds one and two. But the storybook postseason came to an end against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night as last year's Eastern Conference Champions captured the Prince of Wales Trophy once again by sweeping the Hurricanes at the RBC, 4-1.
Game 4 seemed eerily similar to a couple of the previous games as the Canes showed good life at the beginning of the contest, only to end up succumbing to the ever-pressing Penguins who came hard at the home team all night long.
Backs Against The Wall: Trailing The Series 3-0, Hurricanes Will Look To Take Game 4 From Pens
The Carolina Hurricanes get their fourth — and perhaps final — chance to make a dent in the Penguins armor, hosting Pittsburgh in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals series they trail 3-0.
Through three games, everything that could go wrong for the Canes has. From series-opening injuries to Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole, to defensive lapses and breakdowns, to confidence and style-of-play issues, Carolina has yet to get their skates under them. But that doesn't take away from what the Penguins have been able to do, specifically superstars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby.
Carolina on the Brink - Pens 6, Canes 2
The Carolina Hurricanes scored the game's first goal and had the loud support of their home fans behind them, two factors that have usually meant success, but the team could not stop the onslaught of the Pittsburgh Penguins last night in Raleigh as the Pens put the Canes on the brink of elimination, 6-2.
Once again members of the team and the coach do not seem to have any answers on how to beat the powerhouse Penguins. When Eric Staal was asked if the team had to play a perfect game to defeat the Pens, he shook his head no. "We just need to play better".
Erik Cole said the same thing when asked what the Canes needed to do in order to beat the Pens. His reply, "We need to play better."
Obviously, that's easier said than done. The Canes have been saying that for three games now, but have been dominated as Pittsburgh has been seemingly scoring at will at times and has scored 16 goals against the Canes in the first three games of the series.
