Clicks and Clippings: Who said Summer would be boring?
Countdown Clock
Believe it or not, since the last Hurricanes game April 4th till Full Training Camp starts at noon on September 17th, we've made it about two-thirds of the way through the summer! July has been chock full of interesting developments with all the activity going on on Edwards Mill Road. After all, it's the season when the Leagues's General Managers are making headlines.
First off - Canes Country has just learned that, thanks to the efforts of our readers and others supporting Katherine Fritsch's hope to sing the Anthem at an Atlanta Falcons game, her vote count soared today to 4th place before the online voting closed. That met the cutoff and the11-year old in pink cowboy boots will indeed be singing for a game by special appearance on Sunday, November 7th! Her family asked us to relay their appreciation. Congratulations KK!
When it comes to GM's, as we've noted for weeks, the Southeast Division has the most new faces at the table. According to NHL.com, four of the seven most compelling franchise honchos are Carolina's Southeast rivals. And considering the criteria, we can be glad the Hurricanes' Jim Rutherford is the only one in the Division who isn't listed. Seven GMs who figure to keep life interesting - 2010 Offseason News Although the regular season is still two months from starting, the seven GMs highlighted by NHL.com are intriguing figures.
After the jump, a video of the kids working out off-ice at prospects camp and a few various and sundry links that will help you pass the time and keep you in the right mood.
Clicks and Clippings: The 2010 Draft, Who are these guys? (Part 2)
On Monday we looked at a compilation of links and video on the first five players the Carolina Hurricanes added to the organization over the weekend. Now I've got good stuff on the other six.
After the jump, a one-by-one introduction to Austin Levi, Bobby Sanguinetti, Justin Shugg, Tyler Stahl, Jonathan Matsumoto, and Frederik Andersen.
Clicks and Clippings: The 2010 Draft: Who are these guys? (Part 1)
When asked Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles how he felt about the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford answered with confidence (and maybe some relief), "This is a year in which things fell the way we hoped they would. We're really excited about the players we got."
With eleven new names added to the rosters and depth charts, I've put together a collection of links to introduce you to each of these eleven hockey players now in the system. Today I've got the goods on the first five, and tomorrow we'll look at the other six.
First up, a couple synopses of the Canes Draft results:
Hurricanes Wrap-up 2010 NHL Entry Draft - Carolina Hurricanes Paul Branecky goes through picks 2 through 11 and explains what happened with each
Canes Add 10 Players on Day Two - Carolina Hurricanes Some came via the draft and some came via trades, but at the end of the [second] day the Hurricanes ended up with 10 new additions.
The CanesVision online video center is full of quick-hit features on the players and thoughts from head scout Tony MacDonald.
After the jump, a one-by-one look at Jeff Skinner, Justin Faulk, Riley Nash, Mark Alt, and Danny Biega.

So why am I (and seemingly so many others across the hockey blogosphere) so pleased the Canadiens won last night? Because I'm a hockey fan who, like most of us, hold a special place in our hearts for the underdogs who defy the "experts" and figure out how to win on guts, smarts, and all-out total team effort. So when I read this story today by a Yahoo!Sports writer not named Wyshynski, it all made sense:
Old-school Habs deserve to be America's team - NHL - Eric Adelson, Yahoo! Sports These loveable Habs are turning the NHL world upside down by going back to the game's roots. ...Had the sport changed completely, from team-first to star-centered? Were media-blessed stars like Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby really able to take over and win on their own?
Damien Cox: Dare to dream, Habs fans - thestar.com ...Jaroslav Halak, Evgeni Nabokov and Antti Niemi, two ninth-round picks and an undrafted Finn, have already secured berths in the Final Four.
Habs heat up in Year of the Smurf - The Globe and Mail Despite hearing their whole careers they were too small, Cammalleri, Gionta, Gomez et al continue to defy tall odds
After the jump, great home video of fans welcoming their Canadien heroes home at the Montreal airport, looking afresh at Michael Leighton, Canes at Worlds, and a few other links from the blogosphere.
Clicks and Clippings: Caps, Rats and other tales
Today the world of hockey journalists and bloggers responded to the stunning upset of the Washington Capitals by the Montreal Canadiens last night. The stories have been emotional and reveal a lot about the sport and at least for me, about human nature. While much has been written, I've selected a few I think best capture the mood of "what happened".
From inside the Capitals organization:
From the owner, Ted Leonsis: If It Doesn’t Kill You–It Makes You Stronger " Teds Take (and after the jump, TSN's Bob Mackenzie looks to read the tea leaves here)
From the captain Alex Ovechkin, post game:
Clicks and Clippings: Playoffs Round 1 (but not us)
Playoff hockey: Round I
First off, a great playoff hockey news source you may not have bookmarked yet is right around the corner. The people who oversee all things NHL Hockey for SBN are working round the clock to keep this site, the Stanley Cup Playoffs Quarterfinal Round : from SB Nation, up-to-date with all the latest and best posts from our network friends who cover the teams who haven't been eliminated. (And we here at Canes Country don't feel left out of the party; not at all. :sniff sniff:)
Looking beyond that one-stop-shop, I've linked a few of the better stories on the playoffs today:
Our favorite hockey blog gurus Bob and Cory took a look back on the season earlier this week with some of our colleagues over at From the Rink. They also had a chance to name their upset picks. Spoiler: Bob went way out on a limb and named the Red Wings over the Coyotes. (This was of course before they began throwthesnake)
Confirming my theory that no matter how good life is for them, some people are always crying foul: Avs, Habs call bulls**t on Coyotes ‘cinderella story’ label | Intent to Blow Members of the Colorado Avalanche and the Montreal Canadians held a joint press conference Friday morning to formally call boloney on hockey writers.
After the jump I've got a few links grouped by playoff series, plus looking at what's up in Albany, Raleigh and even Helsinki this week.
Clicks and Clippings: Destinations unknown
When not caught up in predicting playoff matchups, or the logic of the latest suspension for a questionable hit, it seems everyone in the hockey media today is enjoying (and re-tweeting) these fascinating observations of Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman about his travels in Russia, focusing on separating truth from rumor when it comes to the KHL. Do not miss this! Postcard from Russia: Great people, crazy country - Elliotte Friedman
Friedman's travelog also provided my theme for today as we head into the final 9 days of the regular hockey season. No one seems to know for sure where the Hurricanes will be on April 11th, so I've put together an assembly of posts that sort through some possible destinations.
Looking toward the playoff season
2010 NHL playoff races: Handicapping who's in, who's out - ESPN can't quite ignore the Canes. Here's what they wrote: Funny to include the Hurricanes in a playoff-race primer, but it's a testament to their never-say-die attitude that they're on the fringe of the playoff bubble after bumbling through the first half of the season.
Southeast: Where division stands in final days - NHL.com - Division Notebooks NHL.com's Mike Morreale looks at the status of the Southeast Division teams as the regular season winds down. And if you're wondering if you're ready to swear off the Koolaid for good (or at least for this season), here's that graph.
Fire & Ice: Devils coach Jacques Lemaire not planning to give Martin Brodeur any games off (this is news?)
Flyers sign another goalie | Frequent Flyers | 04/01/2010 The Flyers have signed goaltender Sebastien Caron from the Swiss Elite League in Europe, general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed.... Since he signed after the March 3 trade deadline, he won’t be eligible for the playoffs. (This would be goaltender #7 on the season. Michael Leighton's re-hab becomes priority #1)
Injury Only A Minor Concern For Caps' Walker Scott Walker has had some bad luck since he joined the Washington Capitals, but his family has been through much worse in the past year. And for those of you hoping to make that #8 seed, it would be the top-seeded Caps' Joe Corvo and Walker on the other side of the circle this year.
After the jump, some other places we might as well start exploring.
Hurricanes Newsstand — May 29
The Carolina Hurricanes players and front office continue their exit interviews today. The general vibe seems to be that the team would like the same group back next season, and the players who have the option to leave want to stay.
Right now everyone is saying all the right things. But as they say, money talks. But players like Jussi Jokinen, who got his groove back in Raleigh playing with two fellow Finns, and Erik Cole, who returned to the team that drafted him after less than a season in Edmonton, would likely look beyond the dollar signs to stay with the Canes.
Also, Peter Laviolette is pursuing the Minnesota Wild's coaching vacancy, telling the Star-Tribune:
"It's a terrific, prime position for whoever gets the opportunity there, but nothing at this point officially has happened yet. I'm definitely interested in coaching again. Minnesota is one of the premier jobs out there, so if there was a possibility, it's certainly something I'd like to explore."
