Charlotte Checkers challenge their fans to a Teddy Bear Toss

The Bears are coming to North Carolina this weekend The Checkers are challenging each and every fan at Friday's game to bring a stuffed animal (wrapped in clear plastic) to throw on the ice. Each year, approximately 3,000 kids go through Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital and we want to ensure every one of those children gets a bear this year. The bears will be delivered by Checkers players to Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital during the holidays. Here's a link to learn more and see a video of how this works in Hershey PA, where tomorrow's opponents hosted a similar event last season. Looks like a great time to show your stuff, Carolina hockey fans.

Checkers Sign Brad Herauf to One-Way AHL Contract

Checkers add Rookie Forward Matt Beca


Charlotte Checkers head coach and general manager Jeff Daniels and senior vice president of hockey business operations Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has agreed to terms with rookie forward Matt Beca on a two-way [AHL/ECHL] contract. Beca, 24, completed his fourth year at Clarkson University in 2009-10, leading the team with 20 goals and 38 points. He was named most valuable player at Clarkson, while also taking home ECAC Player of the Week honors in October, 2009. Following the season, Beca skated in five games with the Springfield Falcons (AHL), where he potted one goal.

Charlotte Checkers sign Defenseman Elgin Reid


Elgin Reid played nine games with Albany and most of last season with the Everblades. He also participated in the Traverse City prospects tournament in 2009 as an unsigned free agent for the Hurricanes. This is a 2-way AHL/ECHL deal.

Charlotte Checkers announce AHL Hockey Operations Staff

Daniels, Kinnear To Coach Canes’ Top Affiliate; Wilkinson Back In Front-Office Role CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Charlotte Checkers owner and CEO Michael Kahn announced today the team’s hockey operations staff heading into its inaugural American Hockey League season as the top affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. Jeff Daniels was named as head coach and general manager, Geordie Kinnear as assistant coach, Brian Maddox as head athletic trainer and Jason McGrath as head equipment manager. In addition, [former and longtime ECHL coach for the Charlotte Checkers], Derek Wilkinson has been named senior vice president of hockey business operations. New AHL Division Alignment - Charlotte in East Division

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced that the league will operate with an all-time high of 30 active teams in 2010-11, which will also mark the AHL’s historic 75th season. NHL teams will now each have their own affiliate. Charlotte will be in the East Division along with Adirondack, Albany, Binghamton, Hershey, Syracuse, Wilkes-Barre, and Norfolk.
