Big Shot

The Toronto Maple Leafs are supposedly looking for a "big shot" to take over for struggling general manager, John Ferguson. Some of the names mentioned as possible replacements include, Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman, and Ron Francis. Personally, I don't think that Francis would accept that position, but I guess you never know. "The Franchise" has things pretty good right now and seems to enjoy life in easy going Carolina. Would it be worth it to uproot his family and move to the center of the hockey universe, where his every move would be scrutinized under a microscope? That doesn't sound like the Ron Francis that I know.

According to a recent story on Sportsnet.ca, Ferguson tried to fire coach Paul Maurice, but was told no! Of course you never know what to believe when it comes to rumors and reports out of "Leafland", but one thing is for sure, the current management is presently under siege and is in turmoil. I haven't noticed any names mentioned as far as new coaches go, but I have seen plenty of conjecture regarding candidates for GM, including Canes GM Jim Rutherford. If I was on the board of governors that controls the Leafs, Rutherford would be my target, not one of the big names with no experience. Hopefully, owner Peter Karmanos is paying attention to the situation and will make sure that JR stays put. We'll have to watch and see what happens.
