35 years ago today, a record was set that has withstood the test of time. A record that not even Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, or other greats have been able to break.
On a Saturday night as most of a nation watched a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, the Toronto Maple Leafs blitzed the Boston Bruins, 11-4 and Darryl Sittler would accomplish something very special. Sittler scored six goals and had four assists, giving him a total of 10 points for the game.
A friend of Canes Country, Sean Mitton, from the Canadian Expat site, recently interviewed Sittler and asked him about that special night.
The first period, Sittler collected two assists and went on in the second period to score three goals and had two assists. "During the second intermission, the statistician came to the dressing room and let me know that I was only one point away from Maurice 'Rocket' Richards record of 8 points," Sittler remembers.
He went on to score three more goals in the third.
