The Charlotte Checkers scored three times in the third period and went on to defeat the Houston Aeros, 3-1 Saturday night in Houston. Justin Peters made 27 saves and picked up the win for the visitors.
The game was the season opener for both clubs.
Tim Wallace opened the scoring about five minutes into the third period with a powerplay tally. Zach Boychuk and Justin Faulk got the assists. Chris Terry would score the eventual game winner just a minute and change later. Faulk would earn another assist on that play.
Jerome Samson added an empty netter near the end of the game with the help of an unselfish play by Captain, Brett Sutter.
The two teams square off again on Sunday night. The Checkers face the Texas Stars Sunday night.
